Filibusta Friday!

So I've decided that each week, on every Friday, I'll post pictures of my Washingtonia filibusta seedlings. Just so I can document and share the growth of these palms. I already posted a picture of them a little over a week ago, but now the pictures can officially start. The second and third picture are of the ones that seem to be growing the best, this could change and is one of the reasons why I want to document their growth.

Sabal palmetto on Inks Lake, Texas
by Meangreen94z- 1 follower

There are a few(4-5) Sabal palmetto growing on the shoreline of Inks Lake within the Texas state park. The park has owned the land since 1940 when the Lake was being created. So I’m guessing the seed washed up from elsewhere on the lake. They are growing under a tree canopy, although a few are about to break through. Nothing terribly exciting to look at aesthetically but interesting given the area. They probably saw 2-3°F in 2021.

Palm/plant resurrection method

I don't know how many of you leave sick/dying plants in the ground longer than you should in the vain hope they might pull through. I also don't know if any of you are the type to dig something up too soon that might still be salvageable. I try to come down somewhere in the middle. I came up with a good low effort method of saving nearly dead plants a couple of years ago though. When I have a plant that looks so bad that I don't want to leave it on display in my landscape anymore, I have started digging them up sooner rather than later. I don't throw the struggling plant out just yet either. I have started planting them in the back of my compost pile and just lettin…

Sabal Birmingham Move
by ahosey01- 1 follower

I have a Sabal 'Birmingham' planted in my flood irrigated lawn that doesn't like something about its planting spot. It's in full morning sun for around 6 hours, but is protected by the house to the west so doesn't get roasted by the hottest part of the day. It gets a ton of water and I use a slow release fertilizer when the plants around it break buds in the spring and then once again in late summer. I have also supplemented once with chelated iron once a year in case the soil is just too alkaline and the nutrients are locked up. The damn thing has done nothing at all in the two years I've had it. I have heard from other PTers that the recipe is heat, water and …

More Sabals

I have: Sabal etonia Sabal sp. 'Tamaulipas' Sabal palmetto (both variegated) Sabal 'Lisa' Sabal miamiensis Sabal birmingham Sabal uresana Sabal causiarum But I think I need more. Was planning on picking up Sabal 'Riverside' and Sabal bermudana in the next couple weeks. What else do I need? Sabal yapa is probably off-limits because of cold tolerance problems. If I could find a big Sabal domingensis I'll have that too.

I spotted this palm today in my neighborhood. My first thought was a Livistona of some kind, but I'm just starting to learn how to identify palms, and the nearly-circular leaves are throwing me off. Any thoughts?

Trachycarpus fortunei Frond Rings
by GoatLockerGuns- 1 follower

Anyone know what is going with these fronds on my Trachycarpus fortunei? These rings are showing up on the latest two fronds that have unfurled. Otherwise, the palm seems healthy and pushing new spears/growth like gang-busters. Does anyone know what these rings are indicating? It went through a pretty nasty freeze/ice event back in February. I think these fronds may have been new spears that were pushing during that freeze/ice event; maybe that has something to do with it?

PNW Cold Spring

Colder than average is an understatement this Spring for many of at least coastal areas of the PNW. Rain totals are up in most areas and hours of sunshine are way down. It's feeling like February most days and I'm loosing Washingtonia seedlings as a result and the ones hanging on are not growing. We had 36°F / 2°C Friday, May 13, that left some light ephemeral roof top frost. Light drizzle and 52°F / 11°C today. Long range forecast has predictions for colder that normal temps thru the end of July.

Phoenix Theophrasti seedlings

I sowed (gang planted) ~ 20-25 Phoenix Theophrasti seeds into a single 5 gallon pot several weeks ago. Looks like I have ~75% germination attm, My question is: How long should I plan to keep them in this community pot till I separate them ? My thinking is to leave them in this pot for the 1st year and transplant into individual pots in early spring next year. What do y'all think ? -Matt

Windmill Palm Winter Damage
by Justin-PA- 3 replies
Hello! New to this forum. I live in southeastern Pennsylvania and have a Windmill Palms planted in the ground (4-5 years old). In the winter, I tie up the fronds, wrap lower trunk in burlap, add lots of mulch and put a frost cover over it. We had a 80 degree day in early March, and I got overly excited and took the cover off the larger of the two. A week later, a winter squall came in, and within an hour bent many of the fronds. Immediately, I went outside, retied fronds up, put frost cover on top, and put a space heater on it for several hours. The tree is still looking healthy, but many of the fronds are still bent. I have wrapped some string to hold the…

Sabal minor Desert Sun?
by ahosey01- 3 replies

Anyone growing Sabal minor in the low desert that can share their sun/shade experience with me? If you live in like Georgia or something, I can certainly appreciate your input but the sun is just a totally different thing out here. We have no clouds and no humidity and ground surface temps in excess of 150F in the summer months when it's 115F outside for a week straight.

Sabal time :

I know it's been hot in Texas and even the Midwest but here there has been a pesky Low pressure system off the Southeast coast that's been hanging around for the better part of the week . Well that Low is moving on and I'm going to get in on some summer like weather . Sabals love 80'sF-90'sF with lows in the 60's . Sabal Birmingham on the left and Palmetto on the right . My HC palmetto might bloom this summer but it should next summer . Hopefully I will have a lot of seed on my Birmingham that has been lacking a lot of seed for 3 years now for some reason . ( Possibly it needed to recover fully from 2018 when I had a record eight day below 32F period ? It has ful…

Livistonia Chinensis Survivors in Zone 8b Texas?

What percentage survived 5F or thereabouts? I have one tall one left. Survived 4F unprotected and took full force of weather. 3 others survived too. Did better than Washingtonia percentage wise for me. It got beat up this winter from 22F wind and ice this year, but it did have a nice crown by last year. I expect it to look good by late summer. Not sure if the trunk will end up with damage. But I like the curve it developed at base.
