I thought this one was a goner after last summer where we hit a high of 117F. I almost dug it up and moved it to the shade but now I'm glad I didn't. Fully recovered and acclimated to this spot now.

How well do Braheas move?
by Chester B- 6 replies

Anyone ever move their Brahea? If so do they tolerate it well? I have one that isn't in the best location, and now the plants around it are giving it more shade than it wants. It's still pretty small, less than a foot of trunk. Thanks for your input.

This robusta has been in ground over two years and has always looked a little ratty and hasn’t grown as fast as the others. Grasshoppers have been eating at it lately. I’ve noticed the newest spear is twisting. Why could this be?

4 o'clocks forest is taking over the palms....if you could see them in order they are Trachycarpus Manipur (Naga Hills) T.Latisectus, T.takil, T.Oreophilus and a T.Princeps...the other 2 Trachys hidden in this picture are T.Wagnerianus x T.Princeps and a small T.Geminisectus. should say 4 o'clocks above I can take a pic of those 2 if anyone is interested. Does anyone else grow Colocasia "Thai giant"? Right now the biggest leaf is close to 3' and may put out a 5' long leaf by summers end if no storms or wind damage. I will try and find a pic of last years and add it at the end.. Sorry about the picture quality, not a good camera. The "Madaga…

Trachycarpus inflorescence ?

Please see the attached pictures. They are supposed to be Trachycarpus wagnerianus. As you can see the palm is about 2’ tall and should not be putting up an inflorescence, much less one like shown. Any anyone tell me what I have? I am located about 30 min south of Asheville NC. And this palm comes through the winters just fine.

Any Mature jubaea or hybrids in PNW? 1 2 3 4

The current weather just has me wondering… are there many, or any mature jubaea or mule or hybrid palms in the northern Oregon/western Washington area that are gonna make it to true adulthood or long term? I mean the various butia and jubaea hybrids, and jubaea mostly. I know the trachycarpus hybrids do. Would Love to see some pics of the biggest baddest hybrids/jubaea in the PNW. Protected or not just wondering can these things really live to maturity, Even jubaea?

Hardiest Archontophoenix Species?
by Pee Dee Palms- 8 replies
- 1.4k views
I have been looking to see what people think is the hardiest Archontophoenix species out there. I am trying to find one that could possibly be hardy to zone 9A or a weak 9B. I have heard some people say it is A. tuckeri or A. purpurea. I am thinking about trying to zone push one of these in zone 8B with a lot of protection. Currently I have one immature A. cunninghamiana that is still just sitting inside. So does anyone know any Archontophoenix species that are really hardy? And does anyone know if I could zone push one of these in 8B with lots of protection?

Butia odorata trunk problem

When I arrived at our family’s beach house tonight I noticed that this Pindo appears to have some sort of trunk rot. The palm is around 20 years old, well established, and appears to be otherwise healthy. I will get out and take some better pictures in the sunlight tomorrow if needed. Here’s what I have for now: The exposed trunk is rock solid, but the outer shell around the area is fairly soft. Seems to be rotten, and boots come off with ease As you can see here the crown looks to be healthy and shows no obvious signs of distress: Is this trunk deterioration a serious problem? If so, is there anything I can do to treat it? …

Engineers of PalmTalk 1 2

Not sure if there are any engineers or hobbyist that like tinkering with things or creating things.. but I have had an idea the past year in my head and wanted to see if it can come to fruition. Basically, I want to make an outdoor solar powered air heater that you can place around a palm tree. In theory, it would have a vent that blows air up, pushing it towards the crown of the palm even though it is on the ground. I can't seem to find many, if any, products online that are outdoor solar powered heaters. If anyone tinkers with things or specifically tinkering with solar, please let me know if we can experiment this. If possible - imagine the zone…

Naini'not a Takil ?
by WSimpson- 6 replies
Well , I just got my " Takil " in the mail . When I emailed the Bamboo Plantation yesterday and said to cancel my order because I didn't think they had the real Takil , they said it was already sent . If it were the real deal I'm sure they would've said that they understood what I was talking about and that their Takil is the real deal , but they didn't say that , so I'm sure pretty it is a Naintital . Can anyone ID this as either a Nainital or a Takil or rule it out as a Takil ? Thanks , Will

The first and fourth pic is when I first planted a year and a half ago. The 2nd and 3rd is from today. Sorry for the random upload. it use to be upright and now it grows kinda bunches up and the older longer fronds droop to the ground. It’s looked this way right about a month after planting it. It seems to grow fine but I have had trouble with two smaller Mediterranean fan palms that are basically one sucker right now that is barely surviving. I don’t water it a lot but it does get a lot of rain water.

Livistona nitida- third winter in the books
by Chester B- 20 replies
Another palm I sourced as a seedling from TCHP a few years back. It lives against the west side of my house so can get extreme heat radiation in the afternoon. The first two years there was a large Rhododendron growing over it protecting it. I trimmed the Rhodo back last year and early this spring I removed it to allow it access to full afternoon sun based on my success far. A Trachycarpus a few feet away had some rotted fronds and spears this winter yet this one has endured. Hoping this one sticks around. I have some Livistona chinensis but they don’t look as good and grow too slowly. And now it’s gotten big enough it’s throwing two spears at a time.

Washingtonia Robusta issue?
by bgifford- 12 replies

Hello everyone! I have four Washingtonia Robusta (two newly in ground and two potted). I noticed after taking them outside earlier this year, that some of the leaves are starting to bend over. Even with some new growth. The Palms are still growing rather quickly but I figured I'd ask if this is a sign of a bigger issue (fungal or pest). Thanks. Brian

Hey guys and gals, A little background: At the beginning of my palm fascination I purchased from a big box store what was labeled as a sabal minor. I took it home and found a good spot that gathers a lot of water near the mailbox. Later that winter we got a bad ice storm and temperatures somewhere in the low 20's if I remember correctly. The "sabal minor" near the mailbox was completely fried. I thought it was from the FreezePruf I applied earlier that day but still, there's no way a s. minor would burn like that. Here's the thread on that (with pictures, too) >>> Aftermath of the Cold/Pimp Slap (Pictures) - COLD HARDY PALMS - PalmTalk Aft…

Trachycarpus Takil, Anyone?

Hey All - I picked up the palm below last weekend from a local nursery. It was labeled Trachycarpus Takil. The gentleman who sold it to me said it is more than likely Trachycarpus Nanital, which I'm equally excited about because I'm looking forward to one day having a beefy Trachy. Curious if anyone out there actually has a true, mature Takil? From my conversation with the seller of my palm, he was saying he thinks most (if not all) specimens marketed as Takil do not actually end up being Takil.

Could my Sylvestris be a hybrid?
by DAVEinMB- 11 replies
I bought this palm last year, it was labeled as sylvestris and was in pretty rough shape so there was really no crown to speak of. As it gets healthier I'm wondering if it was mislabeled. I know the general rule of thumb is pretty much all Phoenix are hybridized to some extent but thought I'd see what you guys thought. First pic is when I got it and the other 3 are from this afternoon.

Looking for a Jubea and T. Princeps in the PNW. Any advice on where to go for quality and price?

Hey Guys, New to this forum and didn’t find a thread on this in my searches (I’m sure its here I just can’t find it). I’m in Kingston, Wa and am hoping for some leads. I’ve put in all sorts of edible and ornamental trees and shrubs with a few palms as the most recent addition. I just have 1 waggy and 5 fortunei so far. I can’t find many places in WA that carry a selection of hardy palms. I would like to add a larger jubea. I can’t afford 2k tree but also don’t really want to start from strap leaves. Palms Northwest is the only place I’ve visited in person since I started planting. They only had one and it took a beating over the winter. It’s looking like a…
