Trachycarpus and watering system (6b)
by ThePole- 2 replies

Hello everyone I am new here, this is my first post. My name is Maciej and I live in Central Poland, 6b hardiness zone. I really love palms. I have an areca palm indoors and one chamareops humilis outdoors potted. Here in Poland, despite the cold in winters (and recently heat waves in summers), quite many people grow palms outdoors. Mostly trachys, sometimes washingtonias and chamareops. Due to cold we have to use heating for wintering. Usually people use heating wires and white cloth. Some people even use graveyard candles (those that are ment to keep the heat for couple days). Anyway, I wanted to plant my first trachycarpus fortunei plus poten…

Hello everyone, This is my first post on the Palm Talk Forum and I thought it might be useful to share that my mature pair(Male on right, Female on left) of Sago palms (cycas revoluta) have just started flushing. We had a rather chilly winter this year and unfortunately I neglected to cover them resulting in almost total defoliation . Nevertheless, they both appear to be coming back with the male on the right pushing out new growth quite quickly. While I also have a few other specimens these two are definitely my pride and joy.

Cleaning up around the garden I noticed a bunch of seedlings at the base of my silver date palm. I did a Google search and the seed doesn't seem to match, almost looks like a trachy seed but I'm no expert. Thoughts?

When to put Windmill Palm from 10” pot into ground
by Gaga Iowa/Arkansas- 1 follower

Hello! I moved here from Iowa and need all the help I can get with palms, which I love! My first one froze in the winter of 2021 after having it for a short 8 months. We live in Arkansas zone 7B. March of 2022 I bought a Windmill Palm in a 10” pot thru the mail. It has been doing amazingly well so far! It has sprouted several new fronds. My question is when do you suggest we put this baby in the ground? As you can see we do not have prime soil! It’s a lot of rock! She is still in her 10” pot she came in. Should we plant it this summer, fall or wait till next spring? And please give us any suggestions and guidance as far as planting and then ferti…

Blooming Mule
by Manalto- 10 replies

I planted my 3 gallon mule (from Mule Palms of Mississippi) in July of 2018. Here is a shot, taken today, of what appear to be three inflorescences emerging from the trunk. (Is it correct to call the main stem a trunk?) My baby's all grown up! My understanding is that any seeds produced will are likely to be sterile, should I remove the inflorescences so the plant can direct its energy into growth? Your advice is welcome.

Southern Oregon - Gold Beach Palms
by Chester B- 8 replies

I just came back from a vacation where I was able to spend a couple days at the coast in the southern part of Oregon. I didn't manage to get too many photos as I was afraid I was pretty suspicious looking driving around in black car with tinted windows stopping in front of people's homes and rolling down the window to snap pictures of their homes. I was surprised at the sheer number of palms I saw growing that I can't here in Portland. Cordylines are pretty common at the coast anywhere in Oregon but there were some pretty thick trunked specimens around. What I didn't capture in these photos were the presence of Washingtonia filifera that seemed to be common as well. …

Back in 2003, a few dozen sabal minors were planted along the banks of Lake Brandt in Greensboro, NC (Elevation 892' zone 7b/8a). They have since naturalized, and there are probably now over 200 specimens in the area, along with a few needle palms which also seem to have naturalized. Here are some pictures I took yesterday while hiking the trails around the lake: Only saw one with an inflorescence: Seedlings coming up everywhere: Needle Palm: Only saw a few needle palm seedlings, all around this size: Lots…

CIDP frond problems
by Jtee- 7 replies

Sometimes I’m reminded why palms can be a pain in the butt. If it’s not one thing it’s another it seems. I’ve been noticing my date palms fronds have been developing spots on the older fronds. Some of the fronds with spots are only 2 months old. It’s growing just fine but I think it’s not feeling 100 percent. I fed it palm gain about two months ago. what does this look like? Fungal?

Sabal Brazoria
by GregVirginia7- 2 replies
I don’t know folks but this 8-years or so in-ground Brazoria has morphed into something new this season…it’s growth, compared to past years has been phenomenal…the frond (front) in the picture, is 4.5 feet wide and 3.5 feet high from the base of the costa to the segment tip. The newest open frond is the same if not a little bit bigger. It will remain the Trachy’s understory companion but it seems to be taking up a lot more of that vacant space. Discussed this before, but it seems once that trunk began to take shape, so did the top growth. I have a theory, being a Sabal, it spends several years of energy setting its underground trunk/tap root and at some …

Oregon Mule Palm Finally Taking Off
by MRB1192- 10 replies
Well, it has been two years and two months since I planted my Butiagrus Nabonnandii in full sun in my Zone 8b garden in the suburbs of Portland and am happy to report it is finally growing steadily. The past two summers it put out a total of just two fronds, but this summer, with the help of a consistent fertilizing regimen and some very hot weather as of late, I am thinking I should get at least 3 fronds.. No protection or supplemental heat for this one in the winter.. Curious to hear from other Mule owners in OR/WA how your palms have done the past couple of years. both with winter cold and summer growth?
