TWC reports temps last week as 12/23: 6°/20°, 12/24: 16°/25°, 12/25: 17°/35°. Approx 60 hours below 32° A house near me has 3 P.sylvestris a Jelly palm and a European Fan palm. I think the P.roebellinis were removed last summer.

Best fertilizer for yellow fonds

I have 9 palm trees all are 7-8years old have been in the ground for 2-3 years, 8 of 9 are doing well this winter on Vancouver island but one has yellow fonds, almost all of fonds on it are yellow, hard to get good fertilizer so I’ll have to get it on Amazon any recommendations on what to get ?

Cycas x Daebongensis

My cycas has gone thru 17 or 18 degree weather in a pot. We wrapped the bottom. I don't think the entire plant is dead, but the fronds appear dead. Fronds are all yellowing and appear fried. My question, can I cut all these fronts off down the the base or should I leave these fronds alone. I wouldn't know when to cut. That advice would also be appreciated. thank you, Carol

Treating fungus with Lysol

I covered my Washingtonia robustas with garbage cans to protect them from a 14F cold snap. I was out of town and left them in place too long. The leaves and spears have fungal growth on them. The spears looks partially dead, but has about 3 inches of green coming out of trunk. The dead part has fungus on it. I was worried about the fungus descending down the spears, so sprayed them with Lysol. Now I'm wondering if that was advisable.

@richtrav told me about an old/tall Brahea armata growing on the Southside of San Antonio, Texas. I had a meeting at Lackland AFB this morning, so I decided to stop by ahead of time and have a look for myself. It is nestled amongst a larger planting of tall Sabal mexicana. A very nice looking specimen with great color.

Alexa told me we bottomed out at 7° two mornings back with two more mornings in the mid teens F. TWC dot com says we hit 5°. T.fortunei generally listed as z8a, These go to 10° with no problem and here is what I see this morning. We got up to 33° yesterday afternoon. Longitudinal curling of the leaflets on many leaves (maybe 5° was correct). For a newbie, understand that the zone rating is a -3 sigma value from your average minimum. Mine is approximately 10° and my average low 15Dec-15Feb is about 30°. Statistics takes into account outliers and -4 sigma values so, Trachies are not listed for z7b. Washy trunk protection

I knew that the fronds would be toast so I cut them off . Then I wrapped the trunk with incandescent Christmas lights , and wrapped them with a layer of blankets . I meant to put a bag or two of mulch at the bottom of the trunk to hold down the blankets and keep wind from blowing air under the blankets but the blankets seemed firmly down on the ground so I didn't do that , but it would be recommended because it would keep air from getting under the blankets plus it would insulate the lowest part of the trunk and roots near the trunk . Trachy cold snap question/survival?

For the past 5 years near Olney MD (7a) I have had a couple of Trachy's in the ground. The last 3 years I have had no protection other than a foot or so of leaf mulch around the roots. and some copper fungicide once a month. The trachies have about 3 to 4 feet of trunk and the foliage reaches probably 6 feet. Up till now things have worked out fine. However on the 23rd of December the temperature dropped from mid 40s to 8F in a span of about 12 hour accompanied by 30+mph winds. I did wrap 100 incandescent mini xmas lights around the crown of each of the trees, but did not do anything to protect the fronds. Today the fronds look pretty shriveled (see pics 30F in the…

I have I think 11 sabals planted that I covered with frost cloth and had a bucket or a thin container covering them. Had a couple caddo parish sabal Louisiana had minimum damage. My cherokee minor had very min damage. My mccurtain are small and had a little damage. Cape Hatteras also did very good. Had 2 types Brazoria My blueish one is less cold hardy had a little more frond damage than the non blue. Have a few small minors that seeds were just spread out 3 years ago they were unprotected nut but took some damage I think most if those will survive. My greenhouse that took some wind damage overall did good. The sabals did good but a few Trachycarpus lost their center. I …

Just like the rest of the USA.... November and December have been cold ! a couple of weeks of single digits...ranging from 3-9 degrees with highs mid 20s to mid 30s I do have a spotlight on the Trachy spear, and the Washies. The minor just has some heat tape weaved around the base. The washies look crispy, but they are alive. So far so good. Hang on through January and the rest of the winter has enough solar radiation that they should be fine. Hang on Palm Peeps ! Spring is Coming !!! img-Z28122546-0001.pdf

Hey palmtalkers. So here in Lake Charles they are forecasting around 20 for a low over the next few nights! Terrible... But I have a few Queen palms. The tallest is about 20ft. A bismarck that is about 7 ft and a phoenix roebelenii that is about 5ft. Along with a myer lemon, satsuma, lila avocado and a grapefruit tree. I bought a bunch of fabrick and heat lamps and some heat tape. I plan on doing a heat lamp on the bismarck, citrus, and definitely the phoenix. What do y'all think? Should they all be okay? What about the queen palms? Should I bother protecting the 20 footer? Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A friend from the board came to Greenwood today to check out locally planted palms and the stands of native Sabal minors. After I showed him some of the palms around town, I took him to see some wild Sabal minors I discovered a few years ago. I am happy that this palm is native to my county. It is truly a tough palm that is very underused. I will post a few pictures. If there is interest, I will post more. Thank you for looking.

Beginning Monday Nov. 28 forecasters are predicting a polar vortex to move in (PNW) and take up residence for some time thru December. I don't see devastating numbers but much cooler than we've had so far. I haven't checked to see how far southward this extends.

Seed viability after freezing temperatures

Does anyone have an idea of the temperatures needed to affect viability of queen palm seed? Today I noticed one of few queen palm survivors from the previous big freeze in Houston actually has two clusters of fruit, one of which is ripe. I was hoping to ask the homeowner for some of the fruit, but I doubt I can make it before the freezing temperatures get here tomorrow afternoon. Is the fruit likely to remain viable after a few nights in the high teens/low twenties?
