New to the forum, hey all. I planted this windmill palm this past summer - looking back maybe the location isn't the best choice – it's on a little island on the creek! It's in a flood zone (although rare this island can sometimes be underwater). But something was calling me to put it there. My question is how can I properly protect this on its first winter. I've read a couple other threads on this forum and they had some great information on how to sort of box in the palms with a frame. I see that as being difficult to do here given that it's a flood zone. It's been pretty mild temperature-wise here but this week it might hit the 20s and be…

Update on my Portland Oregon area zone 8a palm tree survivors (in unheated greenhouse over the winter)

Most of my palms made it through winter, though I lost my 15 gallon Sabal palmetto (variety 'lisa' was also damaged but still alive). Also lost my Nannorrhops ritchiana seedling, and my 2gallon Serenoa repens 'Silver' looks to be toast as well, despite these being in greenhouse and protected from severe cold and rain. It was wet/drippy in the greenhouse, which may have affected the Mazari palm, but I'm surprised Serenoa didn't do better. My 2 gallon Brahea 'super silver' lost all but one small leaf; not sure if it will pull through. Still, I had a lot of things survive, including many varieties of palms (some exotic hybrids) and two small Joshua tree seedlings (reg…

New Cycas taitungensis-- dividing & planting
by MarkbVet- 1 follower

Just recently received my Cycad, Cycas taitungensis, a plant resembling the common Sago Palm, but larger, faster growing, and cold-hardier. Should be reliable in zone 8. The nursery source had specific instructions as to how to handle and plant this bare-root specimen, to avoid complications such as fungal rot which often afflicts bare root cycad transplants. Also, I got a 2- headed plant, so I performed a cut-and-divide operation on it, which then leaves a freshly cut surface to deal with (and prevent from rotting). First pics are of intact plant, followed by the 2 freshly separated pieces. I allowed the cut surfaces to cure for a day, then I soaked the plants i…

7B Washy update at the beginning of May :

My protection worked well and kept it alive after 6F last winter on the morning of December 24th . It's growing pretty fast now . Hopefully it will have 8 months to get better from here on till sometime in January , although a cold snap in even November could damage the fronds if it gets colder than 24F . More likely sometime in December burns the fronds though , and it's nice to have it looking decent into January . Will

Salem Oregon Washy update 1 2

My neighbor's Washingtonia. Even with the number of cold wet days and lots of frost this year, these guys just keep pumping. I keep germinating as much seed as I can hoping to get lucky with this species, but so far not having any. Maybe when these get big enough to produce seed I'll talk to the owners and see if they can help me out. Anybody know at what size they will produce viable seed?

Phoenix Roebelenii x Rupicola on Hilton Head, SC
by clinenotklein- 0 replies

About a year ago I discovered what looks like a giant Roebelenni in the infamous Point Comfort microclimate on Hilton Head (most winters average 30 with of course the occasional dips to low 20s) and assumed it was Canariensis x Roebellenii but in actuality is Roebelenni x Rupicola (just discovered from googling about it for someone else). Need to go see it to see how it did from the bad Christmas freeze (probably low 20s the worst night and mid 20s the two nights after). Not impressive for the microclimate but definitely impressive for Hilton Head (which is generally 9a).

Why don't Majesty & Cat Palms like inside my house?

Hello guys, This is not the first Majesty palm that doesn't like it inside. This time I had a humidifier in the room and the humidity was ~45%, but still the Majesty & Cat Palms were going allow. Inside they were standing near a window for 2 weeks after I bought them in HomeDepot (they were inside there as well). Today I decided to put them outside, hopefully they will like it better outside. Majesty on the left & cat palm on the right: They were completely green 2 weeks ago when I bought them from Home Depot. What's wrong in my house?

Queen Palm survived low 16°F light protection only 1 2

After a harsh winter with the first cold front that moved in late December 2022 with lows of 16,21,24,28°F and another cold front with temps around 30°F and freezing rain this Queen gave its best to survive. Only a bucket and a thin bedsheet wrapped around , no heat sources were installed. The strong wind made the temperature even a lot colder than 16 degrees . This one deserves a medal and as everybody can see its recovering well. It completely defoliated though. This juvenile didn't even reach its cold hardiness yet. I extensively deep watered all my palms incl. My Pygmy Palm. I didn't lose one of our palms they all survived and recovering well. My friends deep wat…

Hi there I have a place in Rehoboth Beach, DE which can be a hot or cold zone 7B depending on the winter. I've got large sabal minors and needle palms. Will a sabal Birmingham ever do well here and grow a trunk here? Also I'm trying to find a source for this. I'm growing sabal minor mccurtain county and it's nice but grows way too slow. But finally producing seed. Would appreciate any advice on this and where to locate. Would prefer not to plan it if it's just going to croak thanks

I'm planning a trip to the RGV soon and I plan to pick up some palms I need to replace my washies and queens, luckily those are a dime a dozen from local growers Also I want to pickup some royals and foxtails, I know of one local growe in mcallen who has 5 gallon foxtails and royals for 25$ each and 10 gallon for 100$ ill go with the fivers because I dont get his drastic rise in price. I think now im comfortable enough to be able to protect these. Note my washies and queens didnt die of cold, they put plenty of growth on, my queen was hit with fungus, then ants, then rot, same with my washie minus the ants. (The ants were sprayed for and should be gone…

What was once maybe the largest Palmetto in the PNW, sadly after the winter of 21 began declining, and today I see the crown is gone and possibly trunk cut to try and save. Too bad after making to such a size. This is in West Seattle.

Its that time of year when half of my house gets torn down by a tornado and spring is here! Palm tree looks like it kicked the bucket but you never know. Anyways, this year our climate skipped spring and we are straight into summer (we never have an actual spring). Anyways, the tropical landscaping is soon to be worked on as planting will be in may and I will get to work in april after my birthday!

Hopefully another one doesn't bite the dust after this past winter. This mule (partially) spear pulled today and didn't look very promising looking down into the growth point. Figured I should remove whatever was festering down in there. Fingers crossed

Growing Sabal Palmetto in the landscape from seed..
by Georgia_Palms- 1 follower

Hello, I’ve been a member on the forum for a little while now but this is my first actual post.. so I just had a question and I believe I’m in the right section on the forum.. So I’ve grown a few Sabal Palmettos from seed and they have about 4-5 strap leaves and I have planted them in my landscape here in my warm 8a zone in central GA (15 miles away from what’s considered 8b, so very close) and so my question is, are palmettos worth the time to wait on them to grow as opposed to planting, say, Windmill palms I’ve grown from seed that are already going palmate that will grow circles around the palmettos as far as rate of growth (I’m familiar with the fact that they take a …

So I'm thinking about moving my trachycarpus closer to my pool. How long will it be in shock 🤔 can I expect it to grow at all? So far we are having seasonal temperatures and it has been slowly pushing new growth. Thanks for your reply in advance.

Help with a dying Trachy
by newtopalmsMD- 2 followers

During the evening on two consecutive days just before Christmas, temperatures in my part of MD fell from like 60F to 8F My three trachys experienced terrible damage to existing fronds but two of them (4 ft trunk and 2 ft trunk) are putting out new green frond (some with spots). The third (another 4 ft trunk) has done nothing since Dec and when I checked today I pulled the 5 fronds in the pic below. The rest of the tree is in the other pic. I had been able to spray the three trachys with copper fungicide in Jan and Feb, (along with using some H2O2 on other warmer days, but some medical stuff kept me from doing anything in March. So now I'm looking for suggesti…
