Starting the Zone 8b Jungle 1 2

I replanted a Bismarckia I had in a shady spot to a full sun area about 7ft from a Southwest-facing wall of the house. It was only in the shady spot for 3 days. Still, there could be some issues with the roots, and I am tentatively waiting to see if the Bizzie will get established smoothly as the weather warms up. Pardon the makeshift walls (there's a rambunctious 5 month old puppy who loves to chew up palms). Hoping to plant a Washingtonia (it's recovering from being torn out of the ground and used as a chew toy by my dog) about 8-10 feet away from the Bizzie and some non-palm tropical plants.

Palms in zone 7b with protection

I live in zone 7b East Coast USA, and I want to know what are less cold tolerant palm trees from zone 8a or above that I can grow with just minimal protection like wrapping or some other easy method in winter. Are there any more different palms that are not Trachycarpus or Sabal that I can protect in winter?

My first cold freeze; Phoenix Canariensis
by smithgn- 11 replies

Hey everybody, I've got my first test coming up this coming Monday. Temperatures in my area are suppose to hit as low as 14 degrees Monday night. My Phoenix Canariensis has been a trooper so far this winter, showing no signs of any damage in temps reaching the mid-20's, 4x's this winter. This past Friday (for practice, for this Mondays frigid temps), I tied the fronds up and tied a rather thick blanket around my 4 foot tree. Luckily for me, it turned out to be a good idea since it got down to about 21 degrees that night. Anyways, to the point of this post... That Monday, I'll be working late, no way of getting home before 7:30. By that time temps are already projected…

I live in zone 7a U.S east coast and I just found recent interest in Palm trees. I found a Sabal Palmetto "Augusta" that is for zone 7b, so how will I have this palm tree survive with minimal protection without any electricity? Give some tips how to grow and will it survive with protection on coldest days.

Pygmy date palm seed hardiness?
by NC_Palms- 7 replies
this might be a stupid question but a few years ago i collected a ton of pygmy date seeds and threw them in my car and totally forget about them until recently. Its been a few years so they've been through a few winters in my car, but nothing below 18F. Is there a chance these could still be viable after this? or should I just toss them?

North Houston Palm Species 1 2 3

I was looking at a map of Houston and most of it appears to be 8B which I found a little surprising as I thought it was all a zone 9 climate. So my question is for the northern suburbs what palms are considered: 1) Completely hardy 2) Marginal 3) Real zone push Thanks!

I bought this in Knoxville, TN from a nursery about 7 or 8 years ago, and it has been sitting in a pot since then in my mother's yard in Gainesville, FL. I finally got around to separating the pups today. Here's what it looked like stilll in the pot. I think it's a 15 gallon, maybe 20 gallon pot. Closeup. Took it out of the pot and it was clear I had a job cut out for me!

So I see that many coconut looking palms are not cold hardy, so what about butia x lytocaryum, butia x parajubea, parajubea x syagrus, butia x beccariophoenix? Do any of those exist? Also are there any other hybrids expect the mule that are good.

Hey everyone, I've looked around this section but haven't found anything answering this question so I'm just going to ask here. I just bought a new house and I can finally plant trees in my own yard (yay). I know I'll be doing windmill fan palms in my back yard. There's several in my surrounding zip code so I'm not worried about those. But I'm planning on planting a Wild Date Palm in my front yard as that plant is just beautiful and I really want that wow factor. On the new USDA hardiness map my house is in 8B and only like 400 feet away from being in 8A. So I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into whether this tree would be able to survive the winter wher…

Sabal Palmetto Siting

Hey Palmtalk! What do you think about this spot for my potted Sabal palmetto to be planted come spring time? This location is south facing up against my house. Full sun all year round. It can get pretty hot in this spot, over 100F many days in the soil and rocks. My grasses have gotten burnt here. Will this fry the palmetto’s roots? The rocks radiate heat in the summer and winter. The soil beneath is sandy, typical of pine forests. Full protection from wind as well as overhead protection from frost. I’m willing to protect it during extreme cold snaps.

Stones and Stone Mulch
by Leelanau Palms- 1 follower

In many of the pictures on Palmtalk, I see rings of stones around the base of palms, as well as stone/gravel mulchs used in a circle around palm trunks. Esthetics/looks are always a factor, but I wonder if there is a functional role for these stones beyond a simple, attractive (moisture retaining, weed suppressing) mulch, such as heat retention. Would love to hear what y'all have to say.

The Palms of the Oblate School of Theology 1 2 3

On the recommendation of @Fusca, I decided to take a drive over to the Oblate School of Theology on this foggy day here in San Antonio. Man, that place did not disappoint. In terms of sheer volume, as well as presentation, it rivals the Riverwalk and Botanical Gardens with its palm specimens (it is open to the public by the way). It is a sprawling complex, and I doubt that I captured all of the specimens on the compound. There is a lot of stuff growing here that I have seen no where else in San Antonio. I can't believe some of this stuff is even growing here. I know that some discussion has been had previously about this place on threads like Cold Hardy Palms in San…

Henderson TN Palms

As I am presently living in Nashville, I wanted to get the scoop on palms in the area. On a FB palm group (NAPA I believe) I found a guy who lived in Henderson (20 minutes north of East Nashville) Tennessee who offered to show me some of the palms in the area. I was very surprised that there were any unprotected palms besides Needles and Sabal minor, and was more surprised at how many I saw in a relatively small area. Ill add he knew of more but It had gotten late, and we plan on doing another palm "hunt" in the future. First this large windmill palm near Old Hickory Lake. According to the owner he bought two windmill palms about 15 - 17 years ago (this being one)…

I'm interested in buying a mule palm next year but I would like one that's very cold tolerent and shares more genes with a Butia. How can I tell the difference between a Butia leaning and Syagrus leaning Mule palm?
