Livistonia Chinensis wrinkles
by Keys6505- 1 reply
When I initially landscaped my yard I purchased 5 Livistonia Chinensis, one of which is about 15' tall and the other 4 were only about 2' tall to the top of the highest fan. Out of the 5, four have the typical flat-ish leaf of a Chinensis while the fifth seems to have a few wrinkles in all of the leaves. The wrinkles are present in new leaves and remains after they fully open up. Is this just a natural variation or a sign of some type of nutrient deficiency? It's kind of hard to see in the photos but it zig zags with the low points dead center opposite the petiole and on either side.

I was amazed last year when I looked behind one of my female Trachys and saw seedlings and small plants . I have plenty of Minors volunteering but wasn't expecting little Trachys . One picture below is of one Gardenia flower that is way late . My Gardenias stopped flowering weeks ago but this one flower finally opened . Below is my largest naturalized Trachy dug up last year . I'll plant it out maybe next year . Below that picture is the male , below that is the female , and below that are pictures of some other seedlings .

Does discovery cove in Orlando Florida have an ideal microclimate because you see large and healthy coconuts, dypsis lutescens, bottle palms etc. I thought Orlando dips down to 28-30 degrees ferenheit. Any one have knowledge of this?

Any of the hybrid gurus out there get any hybrids that grow with armament? I bought a plant from a very reputable hybridizer and it has grown with spines. It’s supposed to be Butia X Parajubea . Looks like Butia, but maybe a bit different, or maybe I just want to see a difference.

"Interesting" Nurseries in the Orlando Area?
by chad2468emr- 6 replies

I hope it's alright that I posted this topic in this section; I only chose this one because it seems a lot of folks in this section live in / around Orlando and similarly enjoy trying to grow palms suited for zones 10+ as I do despite being in 9b. Originally I'm from the Adirondacks in NY, but after 7 years in South Florida enjoying being able to grow just about anything I wanted to outside, I took a brief hiatus from FL to NH where my husband was finishing up his residency after wrapping his doctoral studies in clinical psych. I had to give up just about all my palms that weren't already in the ground to friends and family prior to the move, (I plan on stealing any …

Date Crop Outside the Sonoran Desert
by ahosey01- 1 follower

I am starting this thread out of a curious thought that came from a discussion in the climate forum. I am wondering if there are any commercially viable date growers in California or other areas, outside of the normal Sonoran Desert range. Typically, commercial date crops are harvested in four places in the United States: In the Hyder Valley in eastern Yuma County, AZ In the Bard Valley around Yuma In the Imperial Valley in southeastern California In the Coachella Valley (the big one) in eastern riverside county. Most likely, dates would also grow just fine in the Colorado River valley just south of Bullhead City, and in the Palo Verd…

Dactylifera Frond Boots
by ahosey01- 5 replies
This morning I was trimming back some of the old, leftover frond boots on my Phoenix dactylifera when something happened which I have not experienced. Two of the frond boots, with no meaningful effort, ripped directly out of the trunk and left these big open spaces. Behind them, there is this fibrous dust that appears to fill the spot where they were. I have also noticed a faint musty smell, like a poorly ventilated, wet basement, coming out of the stringy fibrous material when I pull it away from the trunk. It almost seems like the trunk is rotting under these frond boots. Curious if anyone has experienced this or knows what it is or if it matters. None of th…

HELP PLEASE, has my washy contracted a disease of some kind?

Hello my Fellow Palm Talkers, I purchased a Washy (labeled as a Filifera, imo its a Filibusta) about a month ago from HD, I normally don't get my palms from big name corporations, however this palm was priced very low for its size and for the area I live in, St. George, Utah. It's been in the ground for a month, I've been good about watering it, and I use fish emulsion fertilizer during planting, in my experience it usually helps reduce transplant shock. Anyways, I'm concerned about a couple of things, however the speckling on the petioles is my main concern. I'm wondering what it may be, and what I can do to treat it or remedy it. Any input, recommendations, thoughts an…

Sabal minor miracle!

Last spring 2019 I planted a 5 gal sabal minor by the back of my property. I offered it NO winter protection in a 6a climate. This spring 2020 it was completely dead or so I thought. This morning I was out weeding and discovered new growth coming out! I thought it was a lost cause but am happy to see! Anyone else have a successful sabal minor above 42N on the east coast? Photo 1: close up Photo 2: as discovered today Photo 3: day of planting March 2019

This afternoon while walking the Piedmont Trail (off Strawberry Road) in Greensboro, I stumbled upon a couple dozen or more sabal minors growing in a swampy area parallel to Lake Brandt. There were volunteers coming up everywhere, along with several older palms. My guess is somebody threw some seeds along the trail or planted a couple and they reproduced. Greensboro is around 80 miles west of the fall line, so pretty far away from the native range of dwarf palmettos. Here are some pictures I took: I also saw some of what I think are Southern Magnolias coming up. Here they are:

Making use of septic system sprinklers.
by Ben OK- 9 replies
Does anybody else out there take advantage of sprinklers from their aerobic septic system? Living in rural Oklahoma we had to install an aerobic septic system when we built our home. The soil here is a heavy clay, but with lots of rock in it. Because of the poor drainage of the clay, the system uses sprinklers to spray the treated waste water on the surface of the ground, rather than underground lateral drain lines in traditional septic systems. We get enough rain here that lawn irrigation systems are not very common, so the two sprinklers from my septic system get put to good use. I built a flower bed around one of the sprinklers and I planted Musa basjoo ther…
