11 year old stunted needle palm.

Bought this when I was 15 on eBay it was a tiny twig about an inch high maybe and pinkie width trunk. Now I’m 26, 11 years later it’s trunk is about a little bigger than the fat end of a baseball bat. I have transplanted it from my parents to my house now and transplanted it another time. All in all it was transplanted twice. A year or 2 ago I brought it over here. I left the mulch on too long into spring from winter and it was looking rough and barely sprouted leaves. Now since last year or so it sprouted very short leaves and only one of them looks okay. It hasn’t really grown any so far this year. I have looked inside and can’t tell if a new leaf is sprouting. Will it …

Z6 Sabal minors and Needle palm

Hey All, Wanted to provide an update on where mine landed. Our low last winter was 9F and the last true Z6 winters were 2014/15. I looked at some 10 year data and it does seem we get at least 1-2 weeks a year below freezing. I protected the Yucca rostrata the first year and it flew through. Thinking I should do the same with these? I did burlap wrapped around yard stakes with a clear painters tarp on top (thinking it would get some mild greenhouse effect that way but still be breathable). The minors all get full sun and the needle gets maybe 2 hours of evening sun (north facing). Please share any tips you have or opinions on care this summer and protect…

Needle Palm spear randomly flopped over.

I bought it this year and planted it in the spring maybe around April. I remember the coldest it got around that time was around 20 degrees at night and I think I waited to plant it the following weekend because of that cold spell. So likely this spear flopping wasn't because of a past cold event surely unless the seller left it out in the cold before sending it to me. I did order it from a seller named "Ohio Palms" I believe so it is from a northern area but I'm sure they take good care of their palms. It was the tallest spear I'd say it was getting several inches tall. It has one other spear on it that is perfectly fine. The only thing I can think of is the spear was so…

I'm a long time lurker on this site, and figured I'd post some photos of a needle palm that's been growing in-ground, outdoors, year-round for about five years at my parents' house in Western Massachusetts. I live in San Diego, and bought them this palm online, figuring that it would probably die during its first winter. However, it has continued to survive and grow, albeit very slowly, only putting out around three leaves per year. Each winter, around mid-November, my parents cover the palm with mulch, and then dig it back out in April. That's the only winterizing done to this plant. It's on the south side of their house, about three feet from the foundation, in an …

It’s that time of year again yay! My sabal palmettos lived through a low of 7 degrees from the snowpocalypse. Only problem is ice or snow bends down the fronds and they don’t straighten out. I have about 6 sabals with crowns from 6’ - 10’ and was quoted $500 to tie up the fronds. Thinking if I get a crew to tie them up I can wrap them and untie them myself when needed. the cost is painful though. Any others do this winter prep, and if so how much $$ did you pay? what really sucks is this is just for a few days. I really don’t want to spend the dough to keep getting them every few weeks until we get out of winter.

Nearly 3 years after the big freeze I was wondering how well Phoenix Dactylifera did compared to Washingtonia Robusta . I remember seeing quite a few planted at the Tobin Center but were removed because not all survived but some did. Even before the freeze it seems Phoenix date palms weren't really planted in large numbers at all here in the San Antonio area unlike Robustas. My question is do they share the same cold hardiness? I know of some Phoenix date palms that exists on the Southside. Does anyone know where I can find more of those palms ?

Here in Chicago, we have been in spring weather for so long, the privets started growing back, and in december, after our 13F, the elephant ears pushed out new growth, currently, weather report says we will be below 10F temperatures for 4 days, 2 days below 5F, one day -1F. Not a problem to my palm tree, the insulated box does well, and the cannas and elephant ears are well mulched and have started regrowing, its hard to keep up everyday to cut the new growth but they stopped right after the new years.

Palm shopping...at Petco
by Keys6505- 8 replies

I was at Petco with my kids earlier and saw this in the terrarium plant section. Labeled as Seifrizii. I know there's probably a real strong chance that this is just a mislabeled Elegans but I don't have a Seifrizii yet so for $7 I took the chance. Can anyone confirm the ID?

Can a needle palm be grown in northeast Ohio with minimal protection?

I’m in zone 6 in northeast Ohio, I love tropical gardens and would love to have a needle palm because I heard they are zone 6 hardy, I am willing to protect it minimally in temperatures get below 0f which is becoming rarer as climate change comes through. Will it work? We usually only get down to -1f to -5f in winter.

Sabal Growth 1 2 3

I'm going to just start posting my sabals growth here cause I wanna keep all my growth of my palms separate Sabal Palmetto is still in recovery after transplant but it's really pushing out new growth and it's only been in the ground for 4 months. and since it finally pushed up these two leaves I can tell they are just strap leaves I think, but this makes it the 2nd push of growth since I've had it, and the leaf behind the new growth was the first leaf to fully push out being in the ground!

I replanted a Bismarckia I had in a shady spot to a full sun area about 7ft from a Southwest-facing wall of the house. It was only in the shady spot for 3 days. Still, there could be some issues with the roots, and I am tentatively waiting to see if the Bizzie will get established smoothly as the weather warms up. Pardon the makeshift walls (there's a rambunctious 5 month old puppy who loves to chew up palms). Hoping to plant a Washingtonia (it's recovering from being torn out of the ground and used as a chew toy by my dog) about 8-10 feet away from the Bizzie and some non-palm tropical plants.

Palms in zone 7b with protection

I live in zone 7b East Coast USA, and I want to know what are less cold tolerant palm trees from zone 8a or above that I can grow with just minimal protection like wrapping or some other easy method in winter. Are there any more different palms that are not Trachycarpus or Sabal that I can protect in winter?

My first cold freeze; Phoenix Canariensis
by smithgn- 11 replies

Hey everybody, I've got my first test coming up this coming Monday. Temperatures in my area are suppose to hit as low as 14 degrees Monday night. My Phoenix Canariensis has been a trooper so far this winter, showing no signs of any damage in temps reaching the mid-20's, 4x's this winter. This past Friday (for practice, for this Mondays frigid temps), I tied the fronds up and tied a rather thick blanket around my 4 foot tree. Luckily for me, it turned out to be a good idea since it got down to about 21 degrees that night. Anyways, to the point of this post... That Monday, I'll be working late, no way of getting home before 7:30. By that time temps are already projected…

I live in zone 7a U.S east coast and I just found recent interest in Palm trees. I found a Sabal Palmetto "Augusta" that is for zone 7b, so how will I have this palm tree survive with minimal protection without any electricity? Give some tips how to grow and will it survive with protection on coldest days.

Pygmy date palm seed hardiness?
by NC_Palms- 7 replies

this might be a stupid question but a few years ago i collected a ton of pygmy date seeds and threw them in my car and totally forget about them until recently. Its been a few years so they've been through a few winters in my car, but nothing below 18F. Is there a chance these could still be viable after this? or should I just toss them?

North Houston Palm Species 1 2 3

I was looking at a map of Houston and most of it appears to be 8B which I found a little surprising as I thought it was all a zone 9 climate. So my question is for the northern suburbs what palms are considered: 1) Completely hardy 2) Marginal 3) Real zone push Thanks!

I bought this in Knoxville, TN from a nursery about 7 or 8 years ago, and it has been sitting in a pot since then in my mother's yard in Gainesville, FL. I finally got around to separating the pups today. Here's what it looked like stilll in the pot. I think it's a 15 gallon, maybe 20 gallon pot. Closeup. Took it out of the pot and it was clear I had a job cut out for me!

So I see that many coconut looking palms are not cold hardy, so what about butia x lytocaryum, butia x parajubea, parajubea x syagrus, butia x beccariophoenix? Do any of those exist? Also are there any other hybrids expect the mule that are good.
