Palms in the D.C. Area
by Alex High- 10 replies

Hello everyone, I live in the Washington D.C. area and I was wondering if anyone knew of some palms around town and in the surrounding areas. I know of the palms at the National Air and Space Museum and the National Zoo, but do you know of some other locations? I will put pictures of the palms I have seen below. I would love to see some palms that people are growing. Thanks! To amend soil or no?
by DAVEinMB- 15 replies
Long story short, I have a washy (Robusta) that is planted in pretty much all top soil. The reason is because I'm an idiot however it has seemed to like it so far. It was planted in April 2019 so it has spent a decent amount of time where it's at. I've amended the soil and added French drains in areas around the tree (shown in yellow in the photos) but I don't think they're close enough to have an impact on it. Adding gravel and sand will be tricky with all the roots but it can be done. I've also mulled over the idea of adding plants that will help suck up any standing water such as sabal minor but I'm not sure how much they will help in the winter. I would hate to lose t…

Anti-transpirants

Has anyone tried these to help overwinter palms? I happened to read about them on an information sheet from Nurseries Carolina. They say it helps zone-pushed plants with overwintering. Once you spray anti-transpirants like 'Cloud Cover' or 'Wilt Pruf', it prevents plants from drying out when they are frozen since the coating will prevent excess moisture loss. Thoughts?

Heating blankets?

For those of us that have to build structures around our in the ground palms as anyone used heating blankets instead of Christmas lights hooked to a Thermocube to keep palm warm over the winter? I have several in the ground and will soon have to protect them. Made in China incandescent C7 & C9 Christmas lights are terribly unreliable...and getting harder to find so thought about using heating blankets for a couple of mine just to see how well it works but thought I would ask here if anyone else has tried this method? These guys love their palm so much they cut a whole in the roof. I've driven by this palm for the last few years but only realized it had the cutout this last year. I wanted to shoot from in front of the house but didn't want to look shady. Video from yesterday in West Linn, Oregon.

Salvaged Needle Palm in Cincinnati
by donofriojim1- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
In my previous post, I showed how a local restaurant her in Cincinnati had some gorgeous old and established needle palms that were being removed without rhyme or reason. The restaurant had 1 surviving needle palm next to a pile of "dead ones". I reached out to the owners of the restaurant and asked if I could buy the remaining needle palm off of them. They actually said that I could just take it ! On top of that, I checked the pile of "dead palms" and I found some that showed some signs of life. I salvaged those as well to see if I can get them to recover. Here are some pictures of the salvaging of these palms and the largest one transplanted to its new home.

Root Stimulator or similar?
by DAVEinMB- 16 replies
- 1.2k views
One of my mules is planted about 6' from my mailbox and I have the suspicion that neighborhood dogs have been regularly pissing on it. I've asked the people I've witnessed to respect my property.... politely. But there's no way of talking to every person with a dog and either a long lead or lack of boundary understanding. I'm currently working on plans for some kind of physical boundary that will match the rest of my landscaping and not stand out like a sore thumb. That said is there anything I can supplement the roots with to help combat any existing damage? It's growth rate is much slower than my other four and gets more sun and the same fertilization schedule as the re…

Hi, In my Trachycarpus Takil, the growth cone died after spring frosts. I took the frozen cone out, dug it out of the ground and put it in a pot. I have recently checked the roots and they are ok (i noticed new white roots). Nevertheless, the palm tree has not been sprouting new leaves for half a year ... Can you recommend something to starting growth in this palm tree?

The Chronicles of my ((BXJ)XS).
by Dartolution- 2 followers

I received my ((BXJ)XS) today no worse for wear from shipping. The base is around 5-6 inches (~15cm) wide and it stands about 3.5ft (~1.07m) from the top of the soil to the tip of the tallest frond. I cannot see or feel any armament on the petiole. The backs of the leaves have a glaucous blue powder, while the tops of each leaf does not. The fronds do exhibit spotting as is typical with this hybrid from what I understand. There is some yellowing of the older fronds, which may be a result of a nutrient deficiency or age. It has been in a 5 gallon pot for several years and had roots trying to bust through the bottom. Some of the tips of the lea…

Sabal ID and Leaf Question
by ahosey01- 5 replies

Long story, but I got this Sabal for free last night. The thing is big... maybe 7-8ft planted? It’s in a 15G and clearly outgrew it’s pot. Any idea on an ID? Also - can anyone tell me if those little orange spots on the leaves are indicative of disease or deficiency?

How hardy is Trachycarpus Nova?
by knikfar- 11 replies
- 2.1k views
There is almost no information online about the Trachycarpus Nova's hardiness. I planted three of them in my Raleigh, a warm zone 7b, yard this past spring and now I'm worried about them making through our winters. I plan on protecting them on extremely cold nights this year but that's not something I'd like to do every year. Does anyone have some expertise they can share on this?

Is there anything wrong with my P. Rupicola
by Keys6505- 1 follower

As a disclaimer, I'm still new to palms so please excuse me if this is an easy one. I have a P. Rupicola on my front yard that's been in the ground for about 7 months now and hasn't changed much since I've had it. Being that it's in the front it's probably the palm that I pay the least attention to but earlier in the week I noticed the oldest leaf yellowing which I didn't think much of. I went to trim it off today and noticed that the next oldest leaf had a black streak on the back side of the petiole. At this point I started looking closer and realized that the tree has 7 immature leaves that range from just the tip of a spear showing to a leaf that's just starting t…

Queen Palms up in the HD of California?

Yes sir! We have some Queens around town in the HD ( High Desert) believe or not. Some have been here several years too, but am not sure if any are pre 2007 or not? I only know of 1 pre 2007 one because it was planted at my friend's house in Victorville. I'm not sure how its doing as of now, its been about 2 or 3 years since I drove by it & it wasn't looking good. New owners are not watering & fertilizing enough. So are these on borrowed time or permanent residence??
