OK, I haven't seen anything on this subject yet, so thought I'd start it now... I'm sure everyone is starting to get 'Biennial Fever', and registrations are now closed. So, if you are going please copy and paste the previous post, then add your name and details to the list (as we did in the thread 'Palmtalk members at the Thailand Biennial')... Let's see who's going... Daryl O'Connor from Queensland 2nd Biennial 1st Biennial was Thailand 2012

Palm Talk Members NOT at the Biennial?
by Jerry@TreeZoo- 29 replies
- 2.7k views
I was unable to attend the Biennial, and was wondering if there are going to be any non attendees informally meeting the attendees at the hotel or Jeff Searle's place or some other place? Maybe after hours or before hours? Any thoughts, I would love to hear them.

Sabal lecture in Rio
by Scott Zona- 1 reply

Many of the Biennial attendees enjoyed Tomas Font's presentation on Sabal, which led some folks to ask if my monograph of Sabal is still available. I have a pdf scan of the monograph, which I am happy to send to anyone who wants it. It's a large file (51 MB), so I have to send it via yousendit.com, which is free and easy to use. If anyone wants a copy, please send me a message to zonas@fiu.edu. Scott

Hello to all....... I thought I would like to help out in some way, by getting people that have not registered yet and are still trying to make up their minds about coming. This gathering of palm enthusiast, palm lovers, collectors, world travelers and just plain people like ourselves that can't live without them, will be coming together soon. If this is going to be your first biennial, great, you can expect to have a good time. If you have come to these before, well, you know what to expect. PALMS,PALMS,and more PALMS. My wife Andrea and I are coming and I'd like to hear from some of you that are also coming. Where do you live ? Is this your …

Free day - any plans?
by Trópico- 9 replies
- 2.5k views
Some of us who won't be busy with IPS directive meetings and related activities have a free day to spend as we like. Me and my wife are thinking about what to do and we certainly don't want to miss some of the temples in Bangkok as well as the weekend market, as we have never been to Thailand before. The problem, we are going to be two hours away that day, in Pattaya. We would like to see what's the feasibility of arranging for some transportation early in the morning, spend the day sightseeing the Royal Palace and surroundings, going to the market at Chatuchak (free day falls on a Sunday), and head back to Pattaya that evening. The drive appears to be 2 hours one w…

There was much spectacular colour (color) and sound and elephants at the welcome dinner night at the Nong. we were greeted by trad Thai dancers and drummers and a few elephants were dressed up for the occasion so we could get our photos with them if we chose. Pretty ladies gave us leis (how do I write that?) and all. And we hadn't even gone inside the dining hall yet. Let's go to the video

Travel time to get home from Biennial ?
by Cindy Adair- 1 follower

I was on the last bus out of Nong Nooch (6 pm) and my flight didn't leave until 2:40 am. After changing planes in Doha (I now know where Qatar is!) and then to Washington, DC, I finally arrived at my home in Virginia Beach around 7 pm. I think that makes 25 hours plus the 11 hour time difference for a total time from the gardens of 36 hours even with no flight delays. Well worth the jet lag-simply an amazing trip!!!!!! Of course some lucky folks are extending their trip to Vietnam or elsewhere. Let us know about your travel time and that you are safely home.

Orchid & Plumeria photographs from USA / Biennial adventures
by Walter John- 4 replies
- 2.2k views
Hello folks, much has been said and shown already from the recently completed IPS Miami biennial. I would like to introduce a specific post on the orchids and some plumeria I and others saw up close and personal. I know Daryl took a number of very good orchid and plumeria photographs as well and when he finds the time I'd love to see his as well. It won't matter if they of the same plant, there's always a different angle and of course with more superior cameras than mine, a lot more definition. Most of the orchid pics are from our visit to Autobon house in Key West, I'll just post them array style, tell me what you think and add your own pics of course. One of the man…

2014 Miami Biennial - Highlands Hammock State Park
by Walter John- 4 replies
- 2.2k views
In keeping with my recent penchant for posting biennial photos represenative of the locations and themes, here are selections of photos I took from Day 2 of the biennial at the Highlands Hammock State Park. It took a while to get there but it was well worth it, I loved the walk and seeing three separate palm species in habitat, namely Rhapidophyllum hystrix, Sabal minor, and Sabal palmetto was fantastic. I'm also a huge fan of Tillandsias from the bromeliade family and seeing many of these adhered to the vegetation was a real buzz. I implore others to add to these threads I have begun, I remember before I went on a biennial (two now), I used to love reading about the …

by SW_FL_Palms- 5 replies

IPS has posted it's pre & post tours. Unfortunately, the do not go to areas where you can see the Spiny Forest, Succulents, Baobabs. Of course, it is the palm society so they are focused on palms. Is there anyone out there that would like to join us on Madagascar tour that would take us to see the iconic plants that I listed above ? A tour company will customize. and provide a quote So let me know if you are interested, and preference for either before or after the biennial in Reunion.

2014 Miami Biennial - Pinecrest Gardens
by Walter John- 5 replies
- 2.2k views
Pinecrest Gardens is the former site of the esteemed Miami Parrot Jungle. It was located very close to the hotel and was on our way to Fairchild gardens. The palm collections here were originally begun by one of the IPS founders, Nat De Leon. Personally I was glad they didn't keep parrots in the cages there any more, as I'm not a big fan of this. The landscaped tropical settings here were fabulous, I loved it. Here we go.. We picked this day to wear our "Aussie Ratpack" tees, as can be seen in the gathering of people about to enter the gardens. Our guide explains a few things about the garden history and if anybody plays up or goes off the path they'll get thro…

Sometime mid biennial, on bus tour to Key West we stopped at the Bahia Honda State Park for a look at Cocothrinax argentata growing wild and there were some Leucothrinax morrisii also. We really liked the beach view so I took some photographs there as well. A nice vibe about this beach.

I thought somebody would have posted some tourist shots of the Grand Palace by now? There were several organised tours to this very popular tourist destination in central Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit (according to Joe our tour guide!) That name is certainly a mouthful, so it's easier to call it by it's western name of Bangkok... Here's a few random photos from the grounds...all of that gold is genuine gold leaf on mosaic tiles BTW...
