2008 IPS Biennial - Costa Rica Prologue After my first biennial in the Dominican Republic two years ago, I thought to how I could out-do myself in regards to photography on this biennial in Costa Rica. I figured right off that I would simply take more photos, which I did (by a lot). In the DR, I finished with 1271 photos after editing. It was a record for me at that time for a single event, however short lived. In Costa Rica, my camera never saw rest, as many of you know. As the addiction is total, I saw the possibility for a good shot fairly often and went for it whenever I could. The shutter began clicking from the point I got to the Ft. Lauderdale airport to when t…

On October 1st, about a hundred and fifty people from more countries that I can remember, traveled to the Caribbean to partake in this year's biennial of the Dominican Republic. As this was my first biennial, after many years of waiting, I had great expectations and was richly rewarded. I had an incredible time both visiting the county, and meeting such interesting people who shared their love of palms. A unique experience is created when you put names to faces of people you only know from emails, websites, forum postings, and from sheer reputation alone. I took well over a thousand photos on this trip and will posting the best ones in chronological order. This will repre…

The first few days of the biennial were totally engrossing. My expectations had generally been exceeded and each morning I looked forward to the days adventure. The trip to Carara National Park took us through a very scenic area. In the first photo note how the steep slope is terraced to make it more useable.

My first Biennial 1 2 3 4

This was the first Biennial I have attended and it more than surpassed my expectations. I made lots of new friends and met many PalmTalk friends for the first time. It was a wonderful week viewing some amazing palms in habitat. How can anyone forget those huge Welfia regia's with their new red leaves opening up all over the forest at Baurillio Carillo National Park? Before this trip I thought that W regia was a small understory palm, I had no idea they got so massive! My photos are all too large to download directly onto PalmTalk and I have not figured out how to resize them yet. I took advantage of the faster internet in San Jose and downloaded many pics onto …

PERU....IPS POST TOUR 2008 1 2 3

When the IPS Biennial in Costa Rica ended, my wife Andrea, our good friends Judy and Jim Glock and myself returned home for only a short period of 1 day and then caught another flight out of Miami for a 6 hour flight down to Peru. We just had enough time at home to get our dirty clothes cleaned and then repacked, mow the grass,go to the nursery and plant some newly acquired seeds from CR, check on our pets, eat a good meal and one good night of sleep back in our own bed. We were on our way to stay at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in Tambopata, Peru. This reserve is 678,774 acres or 274,690 hectare in size. To get there, one must take a boat ride down the Madre de Di…

Tales, visions of a faraway land of lush gardens, wild jungles, clouds spilling over rolling hills; endless fields of rice, gum, oil palm marching towards temples of timeless splendor telling stories of a glorious past. ราชอาณาจักรไทย This is the story of the 28th Biennial of the International Palm Society held in the Kingdom of Thailand (formerly Siam), as experienced by a first time biennial attendee, myself, and my wife. This memorable trip did not lack on coverage by countless forms of media, as have been seen in these forums and elsewhere, but it did lack an important eye, bigger in size than the one that washed ashore in Pompano Beach: …

The Costa Rica biennial was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I thought that I would have fun, but never anticipated that it would be so over the top with fantastic palms, great company, good food and drinks. This palm board is great, allowing individuals from all over the world to interact and share their experiences with palms, gardens, travel etc. The virtual world of palm talk is black and white compared to the color of the biennial. I got home safely and I have been spending some time with my family, so I have not been able to download photos to my computer and photobucket. After sorting through a few thousand I will post a few. Just to let my f…

Ryan, I'm happy to see that you've finally sorted out all your Costa Rica photos and that you're ready to begin posting! I know I'm not the only one looking forward to this! At some point within the next couple of months, we will add Biennial photos & info to the IPS website. Considering your professional approach and excellent coverage we may, among other things, simply add this entire thread to the Costa Rica 2008 link on the website. However, in order to avoid having to do major editing, it would be great if EVERYBODY who has a comment OR question to your thread could post it here IN THIS THREAD so that we can keep your Costa Rica thread completely "clean". In o…

Embarrassing (or fun) Moments 1 2

"Embarrassing" may not be right word because that implies that the person in question would be embarrassed. For our initial post, with the wild BS in motion, perhaps "proud" would be a better description. In the middle of the large spa (Jacuzzi) was a raised platform that resembled a small stage like those in a strip joint (I was told ). BS decided to give us a show. Putu Enjula was across the pool with her telephoto, but something tells me Bill wouldn't have minded a few close ups. Too bad the stills don't capture the hip motion in the first shot.

I am assuming this may be the first post from the IPS biennial in Costa Rica. Just a short note wishing you were all here, and to demonstrate that if you "mice" are thinking of playing while the "cat" is away...........make my day. I'll try to get a few pics posted, but the schedule they have planned here looks grueling. Be good.

As luck would have it, Corcovado was my destination for the Biennial Post-Trip. I had no idea who else was signed up for the trip, and received my itinerary at the very last minute, but I knew I would have to take a flight and a boat ride to get there. I didn't know the flight would be in this plane: It was a 12-seater, so I settled in directly behind the pilot. The building you see in the background is the airport where we landed, resembling nothing so much as a 1950's filling station with the added attraction of a souvenir cart.

Costa Rican Collected Seeds 1 2

As a member of bus 4 which collected it's fair share of seeds, I am happy to report that my Costa Rican seeds feel right at home in Trinidad and have all been making their valiant efforts to take their rightful places in my rainforest. Areca vestiara, Calyptrocalyx polyphyllus, Geonoma sp., Welfia and others. Cyrtostachys are plump and have been striking. I will be pleased to remember Costa Rica for many years by saying "Oh, I collected those seeds at the IPS biennial in Costa Rica". Pictures will obviously follow as the seedlings grow, and not only for identification assistance......

Starting this topic takes a little guts - because some of my pics are not the best. I invite others to post better pics of these species (they might even end up in my library). Andrew Henderson was with our group a couple of days, and helped with identification. Here's Astrogyne martiana and a closeup of a new, developing multi-branched inflorescence: I thought I had a good photo of a large Astrocaryum alatum, but my camera must have malfunctioned. Here is a juvenile: MM

Pre-Biennial Trip to Corcovado 1 2

Andrea and I decided to jump at the oppurtunity to visit Corcovado National Park while in Costa Rica for the biennial. This is an area that I always wanted to see, but in my previous visits to Costa Rica, I was never able to plan for a trip to this vast rainforest down in the OSA peninsula. To get there, we took a 12 seater airplane ride down to a small town called Palmar Sur. From there, we boarded a small boat which we then took for a 2 hour boat ride on the Rio Sierpe to the mouth of the Pacific Ocean, then followed the coast line until we reached our jungle lodge. Here's Andrea getting ready to board our flight. Jeff

Returned home a few hours ago after an incredible Biennial in Costa Rica. Met many old friends from previous IPS Biennials and also met many IPS members for the first time. And of course there were plenty of PalmTalk members. What was really fun was to meet a number of PalmTalk members for the very first time, but it still felt like we had known each other for a long time after many posts here on PalmTalk. The Biennial is like a giant family reunion and PalmTalk certainly added a new dimension to this very enjoyable and well planned event. Many others were taking photos of the entire event, and no doubt will be starting threads and posting lots of photos (many people are…

I've finally sorted through my photos from the biennial, which I'll now post in more or less chronological order. I have IDs for almost everything, bug please correct any mistakes you see. Our first stop was Highland Hammock State Park, which contains an amazing old growth forest. The mid day light was brutal for photos, but here's a couple (mainly with Sabal palmetto in them).

Lorenzi's Plantarum - last stop of Post Tour
by Al in Kona- 23 replies

This was our last day of the Post Trip. We left Belo Horizonte, M.G. on an early (one hour) flight to Campinas, Sao Paulo state. Then a short bus ride to Nova Odessa where Harri Lorenzi's PLANTARUM is located. Offical name is: Instituto Plantarum de Estudos da Flora LTDA. It's a beautifully landscaped botanical garden not yet open to the general public. This garden has a fantastic collection of most of the Brazilian palm species (minus a few of the Amazonian species only). Here you will find all the known Syagrus, Butia, and Allagoptera species, many of which are not yet grown or known (some newly discovered) outside of Brazil. Here are some of the palms we saw ther…

A pre-biennial 2012 trip to Nong Nooch, Thailand 1 2

I went to Thailand last month and spent a week at Nong Nooch, which will be home base for the upcoming Biennial in September. Despite being there a week, I did not see everything and am looking forward to going back to try and see more of the incredibly impressive Gardens. Nong Nooch covers 600 acres, part of which is an amazing nursery, but mainly full of Gardens with a little Disney thrown in. 1.7 million people visited last year with the majority coming from China, Russia and India. There are over 1000 species of palms planted, some of which will not be found in any other Garden in the world. There is also a major collection of Cycads as well as extensive coll…
