The Fungus Among Us

Its hard to believe, but I would occasionally experience "palm overload" at the biennial, so I was looking for something different. After a while, I noticed there were lots of different "fungus" out there.... First, one of my Favorites...

Palms we saw in Costa Rica
by bgl- 9 replies

Andrew Henderson has kindly provided us with the following list, which hopefully will answer most, if not all, questions: Palms of Costa Rica – IPS Biennial – May 2008 Prepared by Andrew Henderson These are some of the palms we saw at the three most ‘palm rich’sites during the biennial. I may have missed some, and misidentied others – but I think this is approximately correct! Arenal Hanging Bridges Acrocomia aculeata (tall single stems, spiny, plumose leaves – seen from bus along the road) Astrocaryum alatum (single stems, spiny, leaves silvery below, fruits in large, congested heads) Attalea butyracea (very large, solitary stems, large pinnate leaves …

Returned home a few hours ago after an incredible Biennial in Costa Rica. Met many old friends from previous IPS Biennials and also met many IPS members for the first time. And of course there were plenty of PalmTalk members. What was really fun was to meet a number of PalmTalk members for the very first time, but it still felt like we had known each other for a long time after many posts here on PalmTalk. The Biennial is like a giant family reunion and PalmTalk certainly added a new dimension to this very enjoyable and well planned event. Many others were taking photos of the entire event, and no doubt will be starting threads and posting lots of photos (many people are…

My first Biennial 1 2 3 4
by Jeff in St Pete- 159 replies

This was the first Biennial I have attended and it more than surpassed my expectations. I made lots of new friends and met many PalmTalk friends for the first time. It was a wonderful week viewing some amazing palms in habitat. How can anyone forget those huge Welfia regia's with their new red leaves opening up all over the forest at Baurillio Carillo National Park? Before this trip I thought that W regia was a small understory palm, I had no idea they got so massive! My photos are all too large to download directly onto PalmTalk and I have not figured out how to resize them yet. I took advantage of the faster internet in San Jose and downloaded many pics onto …

The Costa Rica biennial was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I thought that I would have fun, but never anticipated that it would be so over the top with fantastic palms, great company, good food and drinks. This palm board is great, allowing individuals from all over the world to interact and share their experiences with palms, gardens, travel etc. The virtual world of palm talk is black and white compared to the color of the biennial. I got home safely and I have been spending some time with my family, so I have not been able to download photos to my computer and photobucket. After sorting through a few thousand I will post a few. Just to let my f…

Embarrassing (or fun) Moments 1 2

"Embarrassing" may not be right word because that implies that the person in question would be embarrassed. For our initial post, with the wild BS in motion, perhaps "proud" would be a better description. In the middle of the large spa (Jacuzzi) was a raised platform that resembled a small stage like those in a strip joint (I was told ). BS decided to give us a show. Putu Enjula was across the pool with her telephoto, but something tells me Bill wouldn't have minded a few close ups. Too bad the stills don't capture the hip motion in the first shot.

Pura Vida
by Walter John- 9 replies

"Pura Vida", used by Costa Ricans and literally translated means "Pure Life." Contextually, it means "Full of Life" "Purified life", "This is living!", "Going great!" It is used as a greeting, a farewell, and to express satisfaction. The phrase has become widely known in the USA and Europe. Some foreigners view the phrase as an expression of a leisurely lifestyle, of disregard for time and wanton friendliness. However, Costa Ricans use the phrase to express a philosophy of strong community, perseverance, good spirits, enjoying life slowly, celebrating good fortune, whether small or large. Expats who adopt the expression properly get a big smile in return. It is an a…

A few pre-Biennial pics

The last couple of days I've had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with Jerry & Cindy Andersen and Al & Silvia Bredeson when they decided to come a few days early and spend it here in Manuel Antonio. Their first day here we went over to my friend Alexander's spice farm and he took us on a tour to look at of some of his palms. First stop was his prized Zamia which his wife had saved from a nearby area that was being developed. He says it gets at least 3 cones per year. Al, Jerry and Alexander checking out the newest cone Heliconia, I think he said this was "Splash" Native heliconia growing in an unplanted area of his property

I am assuming this may be the first post from the IPS biennial in Costa Rica. Just a short note wishing you were all here, and to demonstrate that if you "mice" are thinking of playing while the "cat" is away...........make my day. I'll try to get a few pics posted, but the schedule they have planned here looks grueling. Be good.

IPS Biennial Pictures

Ryan has been doing a great job of documenting our trip, but I have some photos he doesn’t have. On the 6th day of the biennial, several green team members selected option B for the day. Andrea Searle, Judy Norris, Claude Roatta and I hired a taxi to show us around for the day. Our first stop was at a beach about 30 minutes from the hotel in Barahona. There wasn’t any sand, just beach pebbles that gave a great foot massage. Does anyone recognize these toes? Judy and I are enjoying the refreshing surf.

Palms in habitat

How many botanical gardens are located in areas where palms grow in habitat? During the recent IPS Biennial Meeting in the Dominican Republic the group toured the National Botanic Garden, Dr. Rafael Ma. Moscoso to find Coccothrinax argenea growing in habitat within the garden itself. Do you know of any other botanical garden where this also occurs? This pic shows some of those tall thin Coccothrinax argentea in that garden . . .

On October 1st, about a hundred and fifty people from more countries that I can remember, traveled to the Caribbean to partake in this year's biennial of the Dominican Republic. As this was my first biennial, after many years of waiting, I had great expectations and was richly rewarded. I had an incredible time both visiting the county, and meeting such interesting people who shared their love of palms. A unique experience is created when you put names to faces of people you only know from emails, websites, forum postings, and from sheer reputation alone. I took well over a thousand photos on this trip and will posting the best ones in chronological order. This will repre…
