Rat snake in Copernicia prunifera (FTBG)

I was taking a close-up picture of the old leaf bases of this palm, when Ralph Evans warned me: "Watch out, Peter, there is a snake above your head!" Sara Edelman, the FTBG palm and cycad manager, told me later that is was rat snake. A while ago she and a number of visitors witnessed a rat snake devouring a rat, which was a struggle of half an hour.

2014 IPS Biennial - South Florida Day 2: Sunday, May 25th Evening BBQ Searle Brothers Nursery, Inc. SW Ranches, Florida After such a long wait and anticipation, the day the Biennial visited the nursery was finally here. The nursery went through an incredible amount of preparation in order to get ready for what would be a rather brief, two-hour visit. It was more than worth it as the nursery had never looked better and the palms were primed for display. No detail was spared to make the BBQ dinner as elegant and as inviting as possible. Many of the regular personnel familiar to those who frequent the Extravaganza were on hand to assist the event. A few attende…

Thank you from a Biennial "Newbie"
by palmhort- 3 replies

I just wanted to thank everyone for a great first Biennial! For years I have read about the Biennials but wasn't able to attend either from lack of time or funds. It was great to finally meet people whose names I have come across repeatedly. I also was amazed at how warm, friendly, helpfull and down-to-earth everyone was. From introducing me to others, to answering questions, everyone was amazing! I would like to thank everyone who organized the Biennial. I'm sure it was an extremely difficult and complicated venture but overall, it seemed flawless. The accomodations were very comfortable, the food delicious and the gardens simply out of this world!! 2014 Miami Biennal Feedback

The Biennial Committee would like to get some feedback from you about the recent Miami Biennial, so here's your chance to sound off. Good, bad, indifferent, the only way we can improve the experience is to hear what you liked, disliked or just take the opportunity to offer suggestions. Get as detailed as you want down to the food, accommodation, transportation, garden tours, lectures, logistics and planning, or anything else. Personally, my experience exceeded all expectations and I had a great time. A week well spent and the palms and people? They were both spectacular. Tim

At the Biennial in Miami

Hi folks, well we have begun the biennial and day one is complete. I have met many palmtalkers and I along with my fellow Aussie travellers and ratpackers are enjoying ourselves immensely. We went to the hammock areas for some palms in habitat a few hours north west of Miami, fabulous palmy jungles, and ended the day at Jeff Searles nursery for dinner and a look at the nursery, brilliant. Once again, as I've stated many times before, with biennials and palm outings of any kind, it's an equally fun time mixing and joining with the people, and haven't they all been great. I urge anyone to consider getting into the IPS and coming along to these fabulous events, it wi…

Miami Biennial help needed

Quick update: we registered online and paid ~$3,300 via credit card on 12/3/13. Our cc statement shows payment went through. This morning my husband went on the computer and found reams of documents regarding the convention and what he says are 1) request for $3,300 payment and 2) request that we allow 3rd party credit cards access to our financial info. He has gone absolutely ballistic. I can't get a word in edgewise. And, because I am visually impaired I can't read all those pages even with magnifiers to confirm what is in those pages. This is probably my first & last convention so I really don't want it to turn into a nightmare. I have a feeling I'm not…

I was unable to attend the Biennial, and was wondering if there are going to be any non attendees informally meeting the attendees at the hotel or Jeff Searle's place or some other place? Maybe after hours or before hours? Any thoughts, I would love to hear them.

OK, I haven't seen anything on this subject yet, so thought I'd start it now... I'm sure everyone is starting to get 'Biennial Fever', and registrations are now closed. So, if you are going please copy and paste the previous post, then add your name and details to the list (as we did in the thread 'Palmtalk members at the Thailand Biennial')... Let's see who's going... Daryl O'Connor from Queensland 2nd Biennial 1st Biennial was Thailand 2012

Florida Biennial Shopping?
by Cindy Adair- 5 replies

Since I always like to stay busy on trips, I'd appreciate leads on Miami area nurseries. I'll have really only 1/2 a day (Friday), but other attendees may be coming earlier or staying later and be interested in some hints also. Probably those that offer small sizes would be better. I'd need to be able to fit any plants on a plane or mail them to Virginia myself unless the nursery ships. I really like the uncommon-flowering and fruiting trees, ornamentals including broms and orchids and really pretty much anything! I've heard many good things about Jesse Durko's nursery, but don't know if his plants are all too large to be practical for me. I'd love a Cynomet…

Just a quick note to let folks know we've extended the early Biennial registration date until Friday, January 17th. The original date of Jan 3rd coincides too closely with the New Year and people are distracted by the holiday.

for those Miami Biennial 2014 participants who are still considering the independently organized Post-Biennial Palms of Cuba Tour 2014, I’m sharing my 10-23-2013 Q&A with Carolann Sharkey, Director, Florida Keys TREE Institute: QUESTION: I found two of my Palm Society friends from Dallas who have now also signed up for the Cuba tour. Is the Cuba tour full yet with 40 confirmed attendees? ANSWER: As of right now we are full with a waiting list. We may be putting on a pre-trip. If you know of others who may want to go, please have them email me. QUESTION: Are there a minimum number of people who must sign up for the 5 day/4 night “add-on” guided cultural tour…

Hello, I need to know the dates of the Miami biennial to progress any arrangements I need to make, are we getting closer to known dates? There are some other events that coincide around the March period of 2014 that I may or may not be involved in depending on when the biennial is set. I need to know very soon, sorry to bug anyone, I understand Ray is Chairing. Hi Ray. I would have thought that accommodation would have been organised by now, has it been ? (yes, that's a leading question) Thanks for any updates. Wal
