Thank you from a Biennial "Newbie"
by palmhort- 3 replies

I just wanted to thank everyone for a great first Biennial! For years I have read about the Biennials but wasn't able to attend either from lack of time or funds. It was great to finally meet people whose names I have come across repeatedly. I also was amazed at how warm, friendly, helpfull and down-to-earth everyone was. From introducing me to others, to answering questions, everyone was amazing! I would like to thank everyone who organized the Biennial. I'm sure it was an extremely difficult and complicated venture but overall, it seemed flawless. The accomodations were very comfortable, the food delicious and the gardens simply out of this world!! Farewell Dinner - Thailand Biennial 2012
by Walter John- 3 replies

There has not been a dedicated thread to the Fraewell Dinner so I thought I'd begin one so everyone who took pics this night might like to post them here to show the joy and exceptional pleasure of being at this biennial and perhaps to encourage others to consider attending biennials in the future. My camera was out of action so I rely on others to post photos. Here's where you might like to post your personal testimonial on the whole biennial. Bring it on (I do have a copy of Colins pics from the night though, await your okay to post any Col) A great night to end the event, some delegates had to leave a few hours after the dinner and so it went on through the ni…

I just received this information from Paul Craft this morning. Due to the popularity of this trip, a PRE-Biennial trip has been added. The POST-biennial trip is SOLD-OUT. Palms of Cuba, May 15th – May 23rd, 2014, sponsored by the Florida Keys TREE Institute. This tour is fully licensed and permitted for US citizens to go on and will feature a wide diversity of palm species in habitat. For more information and registration, email info@fktreeinstitute.org or call: 866-FLK-TREE (866-355-8733). Registration is limited to 40 people and is first come, first served. This trip is identical to the post-trip which sold out quickly. Tim

2014 Miami Biennial - Bahia Honda State Park
by Walter John- 2 replies

Sometime mid biennial, on bus tour to Key West we stopped at the Bahia Honda State Park for a look at Cocothrinax argentata growing wild and there were some Leucothrinax morrisii also. We really liked the beach view so I took some photographs there as well. A nice vibe about this beach.

Palms in habitat

How many botanical gardens are located in areas where palms grow in habitat? During the recent IPS Biennial Meeting in the Dominican Republic the group toured the National Botanic Garden, Dr. Rafael Ma. Moscoso to find Coccothrinax argenea growing in habitat within the garden itself. Do you know of any other botanical garden where this also occurs? This pic shows some of those tall thin Coccothrinax argentea in that garden . . .

Biennial 2016 Coco de Mer

Still sorting out my 8000+ photos of the 2016 Biennial and Post-Biennial. Both trips were a perfect mix of cultivated palms and palms in habitat. I had a great time, so a big thank you to everyone who organised and attended the trips! One of the higlights was of course the iconic Double Coconut with leaves up to 10 m2 growing in the botanic gardens of Singapore and Darwin. An amazing palm considering the poor conditions in which it grows in the Seychelles.

Bangkok - Ground Zero, at the flower market
by Walter John- 1 reply

The official first day at the four wings hotel on the Tuesday, we had time for a short trip into Bangkok central to check out the flower market, palace and gem stone factory. I went along because I wanted to see Bangkok on the streets, a ground zero experience I did not want to miss. The mini bus included a bunch of aussies, the Andersons of Hawaii, BS man and Bob from Cali and some others. Joe our guide was great, he spoke better English than I did, I only spoke Australian in fact, anyway this was a great little time, I nearly got lost and nearly got run over by traffic. Let's go to the pictures. There I am, winding my way back Isn't she gor…

Tijuca Forest National Park
by Gileno Machado- 1 reply

One of the main attractions of Rio de Janeiro was unfortunetly closed down for visits during the IPS Biennial. I haven't visited the place since I was very young, with my parents, and I was expecting to come back last month with our IPS mates but the strong rainstorms in Rio in early April resulted in several landslides so the access to all roads and trails (including the old Imperial Chinese Vista and the tram to Corcovado) was forbidden for tourists and visitors for security reasons so we went to Flamengo Park and Pão de Açucar instead. The Tijuca Forest was the first National Park established in Brazil and it represents the largest urban Forest Eco-system in the world…

Sabal lecture in Rio
by Scott Zona- 1 reply

Many of the Biennial attendees enjoyed Tomas Font's presentation on Sabal, which led some folks to ask if my monograph of Sabal is still available. I have a pdf scan of the monograph, which I am happy to send to anyone who wants it. It's a large file (51 MB), so I have to send it via yousendit.com, which is free and easy to use. If anyone wants a copy, please send me a message to zonas@fiu.edu. Scott
