A Tale of a Hummingbird and -- the Devil! 1 2

Howdyall: Some of you may recall an earlier post concerning my kitten-cat, the Devil, pictured below. He's cute, and he's a cat, which means his play is training for the kill. So far, he's mostly stuffed his kibble-hole with kitty-cat kibble. But . . . .

The Tunes of Summers Past 1 2
by Kim- 1 follower

Terry's high school reunion post prompted me to ask this question, although it was something I was already thinking about. I want to put together a list of tunes that put you in a summer mood. They need not be great music, just music that takes you back to a summer moment or feeling. Driving down the road with the windows down and the top open, and Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer" comes on the radio, and instantly my mood is light and upbeat. Yeah! Summer!! Another from my past is "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb. I hear the opening bass riff, and suddenly it's 1966 and I can smell the seaweed on the wet sand at Refugio Beach near Santa Barbara. What tunes do you associa…

Homeowner's Association? 1 2
by TikiRick- 45 replies
- 3.4k views
Are you in a neighborhood that is part of a Homeowner's Association? We are attempting to revamp ours but honestly, it is more of a "club" than anything else. Our HOA has no legally binding authority to enforce anything and it is strictly volunteer. Annual dues are only $150.00. There are million dollar homes in this neighborhood, however, some original owners are on a fixed income and $150 to them is more than they can afford. Only those who pay, can vote for anything. In the past, only about 70 homes have participated. There are 147 homes in my neighborhood and we are bordered by a waterway to the east and a major thoroughfare to the west. There is only one way in an…

Fixing Electric Clothes Dryer -- no heat
by DoomsDave- 15 replies
- 3.4k views
Howdyall: I have an electric dryer on what I believe is a 240 volt circuit (note the picture of the plug below). Until recently, the old dryer worked fine, then, suddenly, no heat. The tumbling mechanism works, but no heat. I obtained two other dryers that worked when plugged in elsewhere and plugged them in, turned them on and still no heat. I replaced two circuit breakers, one of which appears to operate the main motor mechanism. Since the heat didn't work for whatever reason, I have no way to tell which breaker, if any, affects the heat. Anyone have any thoughts on what the problem is? Though I'm not an electrician, experience has shown that things …

Who has the biggest head? 1 2 3

Try and guess who has the biggest head. At the end the 10 subjects will report the results. Let's see how we measure up. Measure your heads circumference at forehead level. This is clearly a palm related topic because a bigger head holds more palms. Wow, I am bored. Mod Edit: Sorry Matty --- "clearly a palm related topic because a bigger head holds more palms" won't get past this moderator. Hence, it's moved to "Ohana Nui." Good thing you didn't include me in the poll.

The tourists in your neighborhood 1 2

I'm talking about seasonal holidaymakers. For us, it's Germans and Dutch. Motril is a popular destination for many wanting a quiet, winter holiday by the sea. Every year between October and April, the local campsites are entirely occupied by retired couples who make the exodus from northern Europe, driving state of the art motorhomes. We get a few English, Belgians & Portuguese, and perhaps one or two French visiting as well.

First law of holes
by _Keith- 11 replies
- 3.3k views
First law of holes From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The First law of holes is a proverb attributed to British politician Denis Healey.[1][2] It states, "If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging."[1][2] The meaning behind this proverb is that if you find yourself in an untenable position you should stop and change tack, rather than carry on exacerbating it. It has been cited numerous times by other politicians and in books.[3]

TINTIN in the Land of the Mystery Dypsis 1 2
by Walter John- 55 replies
- 3.3k views
Tintin sat dejected in his paint peeled turquoise motel chair one night, eating his toast and marmalade for tea when all of a sudden Captain Haddock came running down the path, screaming and yelling so excitedly the lit tobacco blew out of his pipe and onto his face burning and blinding his eyes, he failed to see Snowy lying in the way and he tripped and spun and spiralled in the air for several metres before falling flat on his back, throwing up mulched straw dust a mile high into the sky, almost reaching the top of Tintin’s enormous Caribbean royal palm. He in fact had landed right in front of a goggle eyed Tintin. The Captain raised himself up on one elbow and spok…

What beverage goes best with palms? 1 2
by _Keith- 64 replies

When the work is being done, for me it is plain old Bud Light straight from the can. In viewing mode only, a Greg Norman Cabernet does it for me. Unless it is a really hot midsummer day, in which case I may revert back to the Bud Light. And on a cool/cold morning, nothing beats an early walk through the gardens with a steaming cup of dark roast coffee. So, what beverage heightens your palm viewing pleasure?

Crocodile range in Florida 1 2

I recently read the crocodile living in Sanibel survived Hurricane Ian and is still on the island. That made me wonder, does anyone know of them living year-round north of there? I understand one lived in Lake Tarpon for a few years before it was removed, but I’m not aware of any others north of Sanibel. Also, how far north do they go on the east coast?

Oleander
by _Keith- 35 replies

Most gardening sites say this is a drought tolerant plant. In habitat it is found in dried up stream beds. In several Florida resorts I have been to they are actually growing on the edge of constantly wet water features, sometime actually growing in the water itself. And they looked good in the later too. Here I see them in traditional well drained garden beds looking fine, too, with only our normal rainfall. Obviously, this is quite a versatile plant. But I wonder what the optimal conditions would be. Any input from any one out there?

A big hello from Arequipa
by John in Andalucia- 1 follower

Greetings from Arequipa, Peru. Wow, I am so far off the palm radar here. I miss the countryside! Still, I'm very happy - loved up, and planning to return to Spain in September with my soon-to-be wife, Gina. She graduated last night from her Christian studies, and here we are (Gina's Dad, left) with the Pastor of Arequipa at the Christian Centre. I arrived at Lima, Wednesday 23rd February at 8.00pm to a bustling crowd at the airport, and 10 minutes later was flying around town in the back of a taxi, totally captivated both by the beauty at my side and the comparative poverty and manic driving around me. This is a woman I had known only via 5 months of email conver…

How bad is the vog on the Big Island?
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

I was checking out the various maps, see http://hiso2index.info/. Apparently the Big Island gets its share of unhealthful air quality days due to the volcano smog. Which parts of the island are the worst, and which are the least likely to get vog? What sounds rather scary is the presence of heavy metals, euh, not so nice! Rumor has it Kona gets the worst of it. VOG is a health hazard and is monitored by the health department. The EPA acceptable level of sulfur dioxide in the air is 75 parts per billion measured hourly. However vog also contains ammonium sulfates, ash, and heavy metals as well as sulfur compounds, and complete health affects remain unknown. Kīlaue…
