US Propane prices 1 2

Hi guys in the US. Just wondering if any of you use propane (we call it LPG in Oz) in your car and if you've noticed a sudden "launch for the moon" in bowser prices in the last two months? Here the price has gone up around 50% across the entire country in the last 2 months. The oil companies are saying it is down to the Arabs setting the price (even though we don't import any of it from Arabia and produce all our own-even export it). Have you noticed a price rise? Best regards Tyrone

Construction @ Manambe Lavaka 1 2
by MattyB- 71 replies

Construction to replace the main structural members on the west side of the house has begun. Here's some before shots for reference. The 4" x 6" posts were rotten and termite damaged at the bottom, and the 4" x 12" header beam was termite damaged, rotten, and compressing down. Also, the 5' x 40' deck was rotten and unsafe.

FANTASTIC NEWS
by BS Man about Palms- 28 replies

Gary just called me and was leaving his house. ITS STILL THERE!!!! He's shocked its still there as it was raining golf ball sized red embers on him when he last left. Both the main house and the guest house are still there. Even the green house survived! Although he thinks he may have lost some of his palms, the very large portion of his neat stuff looks like it will be fine eventually. Most all of the Avocado trees are burnt down. Some big CIDP's took a hard hit. It was great to hear the joy in his voice. The inside of his house is black. No power or water at this point. He noted 60% of the houses on his road are gone. Jerry Hunter, a neig…

Used Tire Retaining Wall
by Alicehunter2000- 14 replies
- 3.7k views
I am seriously considering building a used tire retaining wall for the area of my property that is currently very steep. As some of you might have seen from some of my previous posts, I have a problem area in my yard that needs to be addressed.....here is a description of the area. The area is approx. 150 ft. long (along an abandoned canal that is now a freshwater pond). The area is approx. 25 ft. from the top of the slope down to the waters edge. I have 4 ft. chain length fence that is approx 4 ft. from the waters edge at the bottom ( and up the sides to the top of the slope.) From the top to the bottom is approx. 10 ft. high. I plan on stacking the tires 4-5 foot …

Why the Username? 1 2
by Xerarch- 61 replies

I have wondered at times what some usernames or avatars mean and why people would pick any given one, some are palm related, some are funny, some are enigmatic, so I thought I'd start a topic where we can share what our names mean if desired. We'll start with mine, you'll recognize the prefix "xer" in a number of words, xeriscape, xeric, always words having to do with being dry or desert. I was born in the State of Utah, the second driest state in the union (behind Nevada), thus, I am a Xerarch, which is a person or thing from a dry or desert place. My avatar is a picture taken in Zion national park, UT, IMO one of the most beautiful places anywhere and a remind…

Pink / Blue / Silver insulating boards at Home Depot ? Foam?
by The Silent Seed- 11 replies
- 3.6k views
I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with these, since you guys mostly live in warm places - but if you are, maybe you can help guide me through a project I'm envisioning. Some of you know that I converted a garage into a plant house - It has insulation, of course, and currently the walls are just covered in plastic sheeting - which is ugly to say the least - sheetrock would obviously begin to break down within days, given the high levels of humidity, and of course, water from the hose! But, this summer I want to give it a more finished look, to make it look nicer, cleaner, and better insulated to boot. If you know about these boards I'm referring to, I'm wonde…

Lookin' for any local input on some good tunes; Band/album names. Wanna add some good albums to my collection. Any genre, slack key to Hawaiian reggae, everything inbetween and beyond. Good radio station suggestions, online or on the airwaves... I'm starting to get amped up about our trip!

Another wall at Manambe Lavaka 1 2
by MattyB- 1 follower

I just finished another retaining wall to create a flat seating area down below the house. This is the last of the walls for a while. I'm pooped! It takes a quite a bit of work just to get a 10' diameter flat spot around here but it's well worth it to have a nice perch to sit and relax on. I'll let the backfill settle and compact over the Winter rains and then level the top surface with some nice compacted gold DG. Next project is creating the cactus and succulent garden below the seating area. I'll be using lots of rock borders and gravel walways. I'm gonna make use of the unlimited rock supply I have around here.

Hi all. I was just enjoying this tasty beer of mine and thought I'd see if anyone else had some recommendations. I like to try to stick to micro brews and I always enjoy finding something new. Since we have a BevMo in town, it provides me LOTS of opportunities to try new things, domestic and imported. Hopefully we can all steal each others' favorite beers (that's my goal, anyways) to try for ourselves. Your suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!! I Like beers with a lot of hops and high IBU's. I'm currently drinking Acme IPA, made by North Coast Brewing. Really good. Another really good IPA if you can get it is Racer 5 IPA, made by Bear Republic.

$$$ Twenty Dollars $$$ 1 2
by Jeff Searle- 54 replies

A certain youmg lady I know just recently told me that she lost a $20 bill while working in her yard on saturday. As of today, she told me she has not found it and I don't think she really spent much time in the yard looking for it. I'm just not too sure on this. So.....my question is, if this was YOU, how much is $20 worth? Would you be out searching long and hard looking for it? Even at night, with the flashlight? Would you loose sleep over it that first night? Ok,OK...you might think I have too much time on my hands. It's a true story though and I thought the sub-forum here could use a little "something different". Jeff

Bad 'Hoods in Florida 1 2
by DoomsDave- 51 replies

Howdyall: I'm going to be a totally dorky tourist, and, as ever, I know there's some bad 'hoods in Florida. Just like California! I hear Opa Locka's, well, rowdy, but gonna get a pic of their City Hall. So, tell me where they are (streets, city, etc.) and say, specifically why. That way, I can avoid them. Or not. But at least know where they are. Anyone? dave

Oakey dokey -- show us your native Quercus, Oaks! 1 2
by DoomsDave- 56 replies

Howdyall: Richard Berry (RobustaEnvirons) was nice enough to post pictures of oaks that reminded me of the oaks of my misspent youth, out of a palmy place. So, today, I went and did a very (very!) brief survey of California oak species, of which there are a lot. They are fascinating, actually. And the rest of you, please post nice pictures of your local native (or non-native) Quercus. Oaks. My next door neighbor has what appears to be a California Live Oak, Q. agrifolia. Look closely, and you can see my palms, to the right, huddled before the potential encroaching monster.

The Tunes of Summers Past 1 2
by Kim- 1 follower

Terry's high school reunion post prompted me to ask this question, although it was something I was already thinking about. I want to put together a list of tunes that put you in a summer mood. They need not be great music, just music that takes you back to a summer moment or feeling. Driving down the road with the windows down and the top open, and Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer" comes on the radio, and instantly my mood is light and upbeat. Yeah! Summer!! Another from my past is "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb. I hear the opening bass riff, and suddenly it's 1966 and I can smell the seaweed on the wet sand at Refugio Beach near Santa Barbara. What tunes do you associa…
