Coqui Frog - Friend or Foe? 1 2
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

Some people love them for both their lullaby and the fact that they eat a ton of bugs, others absolutely detest them. Some don't have them yet and are terrified at the thought of them arriving in their gardens. Others go out of their way to sneak them into their garden. Where do you stand? Take the poll. If you've never heard them, here is a nice little recording. In some Hawaii jungle settings, their collective song can reach 65db. Some interesting facts about the coqui: it's rapidly disappearing in its native habitat, The big Island of Hawaii is actually one of the few places where it's thriving. This frog has actually become the center-piece of a new move…

Your online name and avatar 1 2

I've often wonder how some of the members chose their online name and avatar. Some of them are obvious - amazondk for example. But some are not quite so obvious. How about telling us newbies how some of you chose yours? My screen name is Palmmermaid. I chose that because of my 2 loves - the sea and palms. I am always looking for a merman to kiss so I can turn into a mermaid! Even my license plate is MERMAID. Anyone else want to share their story?

Coming sea level rise to Florida Keys 1 2 3

Just stumbled upon this article yesterday. I lived in Key West, curtesy of Uncle Sam, from June of 1970 to July 19, 1971, while serving in the US Navy. What a great duty station back in the day. When the base maintenance workers would trim the coconut palms they would give us all the nuts we wanted. http://news.yahoo.com/florida-keys-prepare-sea-level-rise-083635582.html

The Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus) is native to Cape York in Far Nth Qld and PNG including Irian Jaya, this is the closest ive ever been to a Palm cockatoo and would love to view these in the wild in Cape York. Palm cockatoos are over 2Ft in length.. The male Palm Cockatoo is now well known to be a great drummer to impress the females during mating season by banging a fresh branch on a hollow log. During long drumming sessions he splits the branch to build a new nest then finds another branch to drum , build and impress They have an excellent diet in the wild of fruiting trees that produce large seeds/nuts and their favourite is the Screw Palm Pandanus, many s…

Earthquake Alert? In Southern California?
by DoomsDave- 16 replies

Howdyall: One of the ladies in my office has a brother who works at CalTech's earthquake research center in Pasadena. According to her, everyone at the center has been ordered home, because, they say, a big seismic event is imminent over the next 48 hours. Which might damage the center inconveniently. So, let's see what happens, shall we? Nighty night, sleepy tight, and don't let the bed bugs bite . . . . As long as nothing falls on you, earthquakes, even huge ones, are highly survivable. dave P.S. Am I nutty? Well . . . .

How do you get rid of chickens in the yard? 1 2
by Gonzer- 49 replies

Seems I have two young chickens that have flown(?) in from somewhere and decided to get comfy in my gardens. They're squooshing the mulch around which makes me think they wanna lay eggs! It's hard to "Shoo" 'em away since they freeze up and blend in with the shrubbery if you lose sight of them. My pet wolverine's unavailable so what do I do???

Further to the movies thread, I thought it would be good to have a thread about actors. There are some fantastic actors now and in the past, but I wanted to focus on those with grwat sceen presence. The are many that whether or not they act well can captivate an audience with their presence and charisma and really make the stage their own. I will list a few examples of those that I think fit the bill, but please add those which you think also fit into this category. Sean Connery Richard Gere Morgan Freeman John Travolta Robert Duvall Michael Caine Steve McQueen Brigitte Bardot Marilyn Monroe There are obviously many others, but I'll give someone else a ch…

Level 2 drought conditions declared 1 2
by MattyB- 57 replies
I heard on the news last night that Metropolitan Water District is declaring a level 2 drought condition. This means mandatory cut backs, up to 20%, assigned watering days, and fines for violators. Going into winter this is not as bad as it could be if we were in summer, but it frustrates me that those of us who try and use it responsibly and without waste (ie drip irrigation, etc), have to suffer because most people are very wasteful with water. I still see people washing down driveways! This was specifically pointed out as a no no back when level 1 drought conditions were declared, unless there's a safety hazard or sanitary issue. People are boners! I've gotta…

Japanese Garden plant ideas/landscape suggestions...
by Mandrew968- 9 replies

Here at Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, we have a neat little Japanese garden. I really like it but have a feeling it could be more complete... or it's just missing a few touches. I am going to post some pics of it and any ideas about particular plantings or specific plant species will be much appreciated! I am currently thinking about adding a couple Chinese yellow bananas and some Japanese blood grass, but I know Palmtalk can help with this one--thanks in advance!!!

Building my Greenhouse 1 2

I finally began building my harbor freight 8 X 10 greenhouse so I thought I'd share some pics of the process. Here is what I got done today. The toughest part of the whole process IMO is preparing the site and base. Everything must be square and level, which at time can get frustrating. Here is a shot of the base from a few angles. Sunday I'll be stubbing out the electrical and hopefully putting up the supports for the walls. I cut diagonals to help keep each corner square

The Great Falls Air Route Traffic Control Center
by amazondk- 10 replies
I had the unique pleasure of spending a lot of my childhood time at the Air Route Traffic Control Center in Great Falls, Montana where my dad worked. My father, who still lives in Great Falls and is 92 years old, started in aviation as a tower controller in northern Burma in WWII. He was stationed at the air field of Myitkyina which was the transit point for cargo being flown over the hump to southern China at the last part of the war. When he got back to the States he ended up working for the then CAA at the Great Falls airport Air Traffic Control Center. In 1962, when I was 11 years old, the center was transfered to the SAGE Center (semi automated ground environme…

Garden Names 1 2
by Kim- 51 replies
- 3.9k views
Amongst our fellow palm-crazed forum members, I notice a few, at least, have bestowed names on their gardens. So we have "Jackson's Jungle" at Wal's, named after his late companion, Jackson, a beloved canine. Then we have Rock Ridge Ranch from Gtlevine, which is a fitting description of the terrain. Also, MattyB is developing Manambe Lavaka, which is Malagasy for...er,...something to do with a garden. It sounds good. Then there is the eponymous Lundkvist Palm Garden, no explanation needed. Many large gardens are named after the people who started them: Huntington, Fairchild. But then you have Lotusland, named for the flowers growing in the pond, and possibly refere…

Magnificent Australian Parrots 1 2
by Tess- 44 replies
- 3.9k views
In addition to palms, I love parrots. My local Public Broadcasting Station recently aired the most facinating program on parrots in Australia titled: Parrots in the land of OZ. I was amazed at the large number of varieties (many that I had never seen or heard of before) that live on the continent. In addition to having some excellent palm growing regions, I now see that OZ has some of my favorite birds. I think I need to move! In the meantime, would any Australians care to share a parrot story or pictures? Do you have parrots in your area? Do you love them? Do you hate them (they can be quite noisy, and they can do a number on farmers fields)? I'd also l…

Eradicating Horsetail -- Equisetum
by DoomsDave- 8 replies
- 3.9k views
Equisetum is a genus of plants, called horsetail. There's a common species grown in gardens here in Cali which is almost impossible to eradicate once it's well-established. It's almost like cancer in some cases, it's just that bad. It spreads aggressively by underground rhizomes, and weed killers used for most plants won't kill it. That's because it's more closely related chemically to mosses. So, anyone ever try moss killer on Equisetum?

Plants banned by Home Owner Associations (HOAs)
by DoomsDave- 15 replies

A little research turned up a little factoid, that oleanders are banned in the City of Norco, Riverside County, California (suicidal horsey-chow) as well as in many HOAs. Any other banned plants you know of? Or general categories, i.e., "higher than the roofline" etc.? Yes, I agree, I don't love HOAs , but they're around. So, how about it? What's banned by your HOA? Or the one you ran screaming from?

Drip/Micro Irrigation Users
by MattyB- 32 replies
- 3.8k views
Hey ya'll. I thought I'd start a thread where we could bandy about some ideas in regards to Drip and Micro Irrigation. In preparation for installing the beginnings of my system I've talked extensively with Gary Levine, Bill Sanford, Matt Patricelli and I've read 4 books on the subject. I think I've got a grasp on the concepts, parts available and my general "point of attack" in regards to starting my system. What I've learned is there's probably several ways to get similar results depending on how you set it up. So please, if anyone can add some info, personal experience, tips, questions about drip and micro irrigation that would be great. For now, I'd like to pos…
