Who Wants to go to Brazil In '10...
by Paul The Palm Doctor!- 1 follower

Hi, Everyone: I hope all is well with all our Palm Talk associates as we begin the usually weather changeable month of November worldwide. I was just curious who is similarly (in my tight cash position) that will preclude attending the Biennial In Brazil in '10? Maybe things in the business world will improve to the extent that by the following Biennial we will all be dining on SE Asian Food...in SE Asia! Best wishes to all, and don't spend too much in November...save some currency for Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, and the many other ethnic & religious holidays around the world that seem to be predicated of some sort of gifting! All the best to you, as al…

We are getting ready for the biggest holiday of the year yet again! We have 2 parties this year, my husband is playing in a band at one and the other is strictly for fun (its being held out in in the stix in a barn). I am working on some tweaks to my costume...new this year will be a leather skullcap with about a 4 ft black braid. When I get it together I will post pics. ANyone else hard at work on their outfit?

Who's in for a Floribunda Palms order ?
by The Silent Seed- 2 replies

I'm doing another order with Floribunda - which has a fantastic, NEW list - anybody want anything? PM me with what you would like. The sizes, and pricing, are all on their website's updated list. Let me know! I'm happy to ship out of the US, so you don't have to worry about the minimum order. Thanks, Jude

Howdyall: I know that the Super Bowl is a big deal for many. But not for me. So, if anyone wants to come to La Habra on Sunday, February 1, 2015, shoot me a PM and we can set it up. I can show you the garden, might also get you in to the Hoopers' garden nearby. Two for the price of one, a lot cheaper than the average ticket for the Bowl. If no one PMs, I might go off on an epic bike ride through deserted streets, all the loonies will be at home . . . .

Who's resisted going on Facebook and why? 1 2 3

BS man's comment in response to another post, somewhat articulated my concerns about not participating in Facebook. I fear yet another time-wasting engine, to add to the others. . . . . While I am a member now, Ive not participated at all. The way the site changes all the time, and the battles over privacy settings make me nervous. Thoughts, anyone?

Who's ridden on a Segway?

Howdyall: Today, I saw a bunch of people with helmets all riding Segways, and, well, it looked odd. I've never ridden on one. For some stupid, puritanical reason, I see them as decadent, I mean, why not just walk? Whaddya think?

If we put together a little get together at my place after the PSSC Banquet, who'd be interested? The Hoagies are staying at my place that night so I thought it'd be fun to visit, tour, have some beers and BBQ or maybe just order some pizza. What do ya think?

Who’s growing hydroponics?
by teddytn- 1 follower

Was always interested in growing hydroponically, wasn’t sure I would ever get the chance to do it. It just so happens the owner of the company I work for had this setup in his garage and did one vegetable grow and shut it down ( as a lot of labors of love go lol ). His wife told him to use it or sell it, so we set it up in one of the mostly empty storage rooms at our shop. Kinda funny I work at a steel fabrication shop and get paid to play around with a hydro setup whenever I want, not that I need any more responsibilities or plant projects lol. Anyway the trough system is a lettuce growing machine. This is 5 weeks from seed

WHOLE HOUSE FANS 1 2
by DoomsDave- 45 replies
- 5.7k views
Howdyall, I'm considering installing a whole house fan that mounts in the ceiling and sucks hot (or cold) air out into the attic, and out the vents. I'm looking for something large, with enough suck to clear out a 2400 square foot house, with about 6,000 cubic feet per minute capacity. This will require making a hole in my ceiling to install it, plus possibly also adding extra vents to ensure that there's enough vent space for the air to go. Anyone have any thoughts, experiences, cautionary tales? What, for example, is the difference from the practical standpoint of a direct drive or belt drive fan? How hard are they to repair, and what is most likely to g…

whos seen Avatar ???
by Eric in Orlando- 33 replies

Alright, I'm a nerd, I've seen Avatar 7 times so far in 3D IMAX, totally incredible movie. The other day I bought the book "Avatar, An Activist Survival Guide". It has details about Pandora and it's fauna, flora, Na'vi customs and the weapons and vehicles used in the movie. All the plants and animals have been given Latin names (the Na'vi are named Homo pandorus). There is Pseudocycas altissima, a Pandoran cycad similar to the cycads of Earth, Saltarus pendulus, the Beanstalk Palm with straplike leaves and can reach over 150m tall, and Saltcellar gracilis, Razor Palm, with narrow leaflets that are razor sharp and sharp spines on the trunk. Now when do the seeds become…

Why are BEEs so rare now ?
by Pedro 65- 13 replies

Just got back from swimming in our dam ( pond/ swimming hole) and noticed that there is Not 1 Bee in sight...Normally, on a hot summers day, Bees would be abundant at the waters edge and near any dripping tap...This hasnt been so for a few years now and its getting worse.. Is it the crap ( aluminium plus other baddies) that FILLS the sky when a plane releases ( Chemtrails) for whatever dumb reason... Plane exhaust emissions disperse within minutes but Chemtrails dont...they fill the sky..

Why are you here?

So, I was out in the garden today. I could not help but to think about what I started with, aka nothing but a few large Oaks. Then I started to think about all of those crazy SciFi movies. What if we woke up tomorrow and the Earth shifted poles. Wisconsin was now where Brazil is. And the palms and other zone crazy things there are the only items that takes us to the new climate and the new evolution, while all of the normally native things rapidly die off. And it is the zone pushers that help us to the next realm. Yeah, I know, crazy, but an interesting thought as to the role of us being here.

Why can we eat some animals and not others? 1 2
by Mandrew968- 51 replies

I recently read an article online, about a California man accused of killing and eating cats. Apparently, using animals commonly kept as pets or companions as food is against the law in California... There are certain food items that I object to eating, ethically(turtles and tortoises as well as whales and dolphins), but I wouldn't force my ethics on another. I understand if a creature is endangered, they should be protected from hungry mouths, but cats and dogs are constantly being euthanized, around the world, due to there being too many of them. Asian countries eat some strange things--the French often eat horse meat(it's illegal to kill a horse for food in South Fl…

Why does the Desert smell like rain, when it rains? New research article may have answered that question
by Silas_Sancona- 4 replies

Great, new article released by researchers at the UofA ( University of Arizona, Tucson ) discussing in - depth research of that weird, ..and welcomed " smell " anyone in the desert instantly recognizes when it rains, especially during the summer months. Seems there may be numerous health benefits for Humans, other critters, ..and the plants themselves as well.. Pretty cool. Nice to have a front row seat to the research, and benefits. https://uapress.arizona.edu/2022/04/why-does-the-desert-smell-like-rain-new-ua-research-suggests-the-diverse-osmocosm-of-the-sonoran-desert

Why I Live Where I Live

Well, it is no tropical paradise, at least not for 2 of the 12 months of the years. And our palm selection is limited due to the previous comment. But all in all, life here is good. Here we celebrate our Joie de vivre. We live hard and we play hard. Louisiana has its issues like anywhere, but if you ever visit here, or live here, you will have fun along with your hard work. And odds are you will be quite happy.

Why I should be a vegetarian...
by Cindy Adair- 1 follower

There are many reasons people choose to be a vegetarian. My son chose to do so for his love of animals. I am not currently a vegetarian, but now have a new reason to consider it. If no humans ate cattle then the pasture owner next to me would have no economic reason to house them adjacent to my farm! You guessed it, they entered again and unselectively "pruned" their favorite plants. Yes, palms appear to be their preferred snack. My oldest silver Joey that had almost recovered from previous attacks is now my smallest Joey. My Areca vestiaria avenue is far from photogenic. Yes I know I need a better fence of my own and maybe electric, but no cow attacks for …
