MLB 2021 Thread

Baseball's back, and I know a handful of us are sports fans. Who's your team and why? I'm a diehard Cubs fan going back 25 years or so. I used to spend the summers with my grandfather in Mississippi, and he'd fall asleep in his recliner watching baseball every day. The Cubs didn't have lights in their stadium until 1988, so every game was a day game. Harry Caray and Steve Stone were the broadcasters, and Harry wasn't always sober. They were calling a game from the Wrigley Field bleachers in the middle of a brutal heat wave, and he said "The only thing hotter than the temperatures on the field is my Budweiser." My little apartment is an absolute s…

Irrigation pipe?
by RedRabbit- 1 follower

I went to move my newly planted B alfredii and discovered this in the way: I’m guessing it’s an irrigation pipe, but it’s pretty far down and doesn’t obviously connect to the sprinkler system. Any ideas on how I can test to see if it actually does anything? I don’t want my BA crushing this mystery pipe, but it’s in a prime spot and it’s not clear it actually serves a purpose.

Weeds of Sydney 1 2
by philinsydney- 66 replies

I am in a volunteer bushcare group that seeks to replace weeds with natives, so I thought it would be fun to show some of our most troublesome weeds. Anredera cordifolia Madeira vine. If any plant could be called evil, this is it. Aerial bulbs can drop to the ground and germinate even after the roots and lower stems of the vine have been removed.

Hi, I have been bitten by mosquito last year, and I can see couple of mosquitos already. So I want to prepare. I searched Citronella grass[Cymbopogon nardus or Cymbopogon winterianus] is good plant to repel mosquitos. Can you let me know where I can buy it near Hacienda Height? Thank you.

I went hiking around St. Sebastian State Park in Indian River County. At first I thought these where southern red cedars (Juniperus virginiana var silicicola), but noticed that these were not exactly red cedars.

help needed, electrical theory issue !
by Darold Petty- 8 replies

I am retired, but was a carpenter, plumber, and home improvement contractor. I am quite well versed in residential wiring and circuit breaker panels but I know nothing about electrical theory. (Why do electrical motors posess such immediate and full torque?) I use this model of small humidifier for my 200 sf hobbyist greenhouse. Recently it died and I purchased a replacement. Afterwards I decided to disassemble the defective unit. I quickly recognized the bad part as a 'capacitor' based on the exploded drawing from the new unit. I contacted the manufacturer only to learn that it does not offer replacement parts. The 'support' person told me to purchase…

Darwin WWII
by tropicbreeze- 6 replies

Today there's a commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the first bombing of Darwin in WWII being attended by representatives from the US and Japan. It was the same Japanese fleet that had bombed Pearl Harbour, then headed south west and bombed Darwin. As a result Darwin became a big military base, not only for Australia but also the US. Aircraft based in Darwin flew sorties against the Japanese across the Indonesian archipelago, some entailing 16 hour round trips. A lot of training was done and many islands around the coast were used as bombing ranges. There's lots of relics and wrecks in the area from that period and not long back I found one that may be of i…

Another S.D.S. Pt #4.. Sun drenched landscapes of Pima Canyon
by Silas_Sancona- 6 replies
The final chapter in Wednesdays adventure.. After some exploration of the canyon's flora, a long winded, -but necessary- discussion on some challenges faced there, and in the region, time to relax and take in some spectacular scenery.. Even if more subdued due to the drought, and time of year. A great place to visit if/when in the area, esp. during / just after a wet monsoon season, if heat doesn't bother you. Regardless of moving soon, i'll be back to see up close what i couldn't stop viewing -from a distance- during such a summer. Sabino Canyon, located a bit further southeast along the base of the Catalinas might be a little more accessible ( Has a paved ro…

S.D.S. in the " other " Pima canyon, Pt. #3 Tough lessons in resilience and responsibility among scorched earth
by Silas_Sancona- 3 replies
As mentioned, aside from spending time looking for various plants while here, another " item " on the days menu was getting up close with the post- fire effects of a large fire that charred a majority of the Catalina Mountains, including parts of Pima Canyon itself. While this particular conflagration started naturally ( by lightning during a brief, dry Thunderstorm passing overhead ) the fire's subsequent spread and effect on the landscape were enhanced by an on going change in the composition of plants in the landscape, partially spurred by humans, and on larger, going changes which themselves are being enhanced by us. While i'll try to keep this discussion as cont…

Sharks
by sandgroper- 2 replies

It's getting a bit ridiculous some of this, we had 20 separate shark sitings along Perth beaches the day before yesterday, not sure about today but some of our best known beaches were closed for most of the day including Cottesloe and Scarborough. Just been talking to one of our friends and her brother in law went to hospital today after a shark attack, only a small one but he still received a bunch of stitches and will be in hospital overnight. Getting a bit out of control, when I worked in the tourism industry overseas tourists were talking about sharks then, we are developing a reputation we don't want - not if we want a tourism industry.

I'm old, but this was the worst of years. (Even our family dog died) Have you had enough of venal politicians, willful ignorance, selfishness and the crass commercialization of everyday life ? Watch this for something better, https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/the-planets-ice-worlds/ Also, here is a link I have posted before, but still inspiring. I visited this sculpture during my last trip to Milan, it is even better in life than the article can convey. https://www.equisearch.com/resources/eqdavinci22 Feel free to add uplifting links of your own, and stay safe !
