I know some of you believe MBTI is B.S. and that's ok. Now, the rest of you, what's your type? It will be cool to see where Palmtalk stands in terms of MBTI. Just for fun.

The Emerald Desert, Pt #3: Wide open spaces among an endless Sea.

Of all the places on Wednesday's list to visit, perhaps the most unexpected is a part of Arizona that could easily pass for somewhere hundreds of miles east where the land is dominated by endless miles of grass and broad horizons. While " desert " is what most people know the state for, Southern AZ, roughly east of the low deserts near Organ Pipe National Monument, east into New Mexico and West TX is dominated by a landscape more reminiscent of eastern Africa, or the Pampas and less densely forested portions of the Cerrado in South America. While it might not seem like it, this part of the state hosts some pretty exotic animals as well. The Valley in which Las Cien…

The Emerald Desert, Pt. #2: Magic Mountains
by Silas_Sancona- 1 reply

After a wet summer, driving through a section of the mountains between Tucson and the US/ Mex. border yesterday morning makes one wonder.. " Did i somehow leave the dry and dusty AZ desert and awaken in California, after a wet late winter/ early Spring? ..Let alone somewhere in Europe, ...or New Zealand? After punishing drought " magical " is the only way to describe such a quick transformation. Drought, as a whole, may not be quenched ..but for now, the land is revived. A good omen to what lies ahead.. A vibrant green, Picacho Peak.. Hello beautiful... Even the somewhat out of focus shot, haha.. Absolute Magic.. Can only imag…

We have snakes.. They have done a really good job of eliminating our rat, mice, squirrel, and bunny, problem! But I am still going to get a cat or two -- to keep the snakes away from the house! Last Thursday afternoon my wife went out to get some clothes that she had hanging on the patio outside. I heard her scream, and I ran to the door. I opened it and there in front of me we a surprisingly good sized rattle snake coiled up on the doorstep, and rattling at me. I think my wife stepped on it, but luckily she didn't get bitten. She insisted that I kill it since it was hanging out around the house and we have little kids. So I got a shovel. In the past I ha…

The Emerald Desert, Pt. #1

As vaguely alluded to in another thread, made my way to one of a few spots i have visited in the past few years here to see what kind of magic this years Monsoon has bestowed upon a thirsty landscape. This will be the first of a few planned threads from different spots around the area / Tucson, and a quick trip planned into another part of the state i haven't set eyes on yet, closer to the Mexico Border. As noted in the " Monsoon 2021 " thread, unlike the past two horrible years, this summer has seen a pretty good turn around, esp. the further south / southeast one heads when it comes to summer rainfall. Hopefully the finish, to the season, is the much needed " icin…

Looking for FL relocation recommendations
by Keys6505- 4 replies

I moved from NJ to TX (Houston z9a) about 2 years ago to get away from the cold. It's fine but my parents are moving to FL soon and I plan on moving there as well to be closer to them. I don't know much about FL other than Disney so I'm looking for some recommendations for some good areas to consider. We are going there in a few weeks to check out the St.Pete vacinity, but that was basically just a shot in the dark. My dad will live in the Villages and my mom will likely be in the Orlando area so id like to be within 2 hours-ish from both of them. I really don't care for the packed in subdivisions where I am now, so I'd prefer a little more land. Some of my wish lis…

Watering my palms with hot water by mistake
by miamicuse- 0 replies

I had extended my garden hose from a 25' long hose to 100' long in order to wash my car over the weekend and I forgot to change it back. Because of this the long 100' hose was left exposed laying on the driveway and was in full hot Florida sun for hours. I picked up the hose this afternoon and began to water the plants (some of them palms), I didn't realize the water from the hose was very hot until very late when I touched the hose to shift it's position. It was very hot, not quite boiling hot but very hot. I immediately water everything again once the hot water in the hose was all expelled. Did I do any damage to my plants by watering them with this hot wat…

With family, and a fellow Palm Talker passing through town this past week/weekend, & now that summer starts this week. figure it might be fun to discuss past or present road trip dos / ..or don'ts considering i'm sure many will be taking ..or seriously considering some sort of epic summer trip, even if in state, just for a few days, and not hundreds or thousands of miles away.. Starting things off, Looking back on some of mine, i can say this.. * Never try to travel from San Jose, CA. to Topeka Kansas in under 30 hours, ..on less than 2hours sleep.. Not totally advisable either when driving to say Panama City, Florida from Cincinnati, Ohio ..though no one w…

I’m seeking recommendations for a *fancy* analog outdoor thermometer/hygrometer combo (or weather station style with a barometer as well). I’m not totally opposed to something that is digital, but I want it to have some style. Definitely something that is functional and nice to look at on my small deck (see example below). Thanks in advance!

Can you identify weed in my garden?
by NewB_NewB- 7 replies

We made cactus garden couple months ago, and now we have so many weed in there. When we made the garden, we installed landscape fabric on soil, and we covered pebble on top of the fabric. Now, we got to think that we had to use nursery grade fabric, not from home depot. Anyhow...now we need to remove the weeds. I watched couple of YouTube video regarding killing weeds, and I got to know that I need to identify variety of weed first. Please let me know what kind of weed we have in our garden. If you know the best method to kill those weeds, please share with me. Thank you.

Adventures in home orcharding 1 2

From the first time I went to an apple orchard when I was young and picked an apple off the tree and ate it right there in the shade of the tree it grew on, something changed in me. Cutting out all the middle men and getting to the source directly became very desirable to me. I knew when I had a house, whatever land I had claim to would be used to grow some of the food I ate organically. Funny how life changes when you get to peek behind the curtain and get a real understanding of things. How wanting the best for the plants I grow, results in the fruit they produce being the best food I can eat, resulting in an overwhelming urge to not be a “normal” spoiled human being…

Oikos Tree Crops
by amh- 0 replies

Ken Asmus has retired and the Oikos tree crops nursery is now closed. I really liked the nurseries mission in bringing genetic diversity to the fruit, nut, and vegetable market as well as the use of native species. Has anyone here purchased trees from this nursery? Are there any growers in the southern US who are doing similar things? I have a few wild goose plums that I hope will fruit in the near future.

A walk among legends in a Rockhound's playground... A thread for the casual, or not so casual palmtalk geologist..

As mentioned Monday while adding habitat pictures to this year's Cactus thread, took a somewhat cooler Monday morning to explore a couple places located on either side of Boyce Thompson Arboretum and the omnipresent Picket Post Mountain. Goals for the day included exploring a retired Perlite mine, and trying my luck at digging/ collecting a form of Obsidian which can be found in the mine, and tracking down some iNat observations of a particular desert plant that thus far has evaded personal, in - situ observation. Let alone collection ( of seed ). Had also wanted to explore the lower portion of a canyon which wraps around the front of Picket Post ..and try to get mor…

Well, that was just Click-bait. Formerly Gtsteve, but I have changed my Username (as an IPS member you can do that,) because I want to help new members and the parent site the IPS. Let me explain. Firstly, I would like to advise new members of a few things, and not only new members, What are all you people afraid of by not signing off with a first name? Even if you like your clever/cryptic username or you think that the CIA, FBI KGB or Mossad is after you just make up a first name when you sign off. Why, because it is friendly and polite and I think that you are more likely to get a response. You could put it in your Signature. I think that the more active t…

Worm farm
by sandgroper- 1 reply

Does anyone else have a Worm farm? I reckon they're great, we throw all our veggie scraps into this thing along with paper, cardboard - virtually anything organic other than meat scraps and the Worms make it into a fantastic fertiliser. This set-up produces "Worm tea" which when watered down is amazing, you can see the difference on plants watered with this in a matter of days. The beds provide an incredible fertiliser once the Worms have finished with it, it's like a really rich compost that produces very impressive results when dug in around the plants. This Worm farm is pretty easy too as you rotate from bottom to top and as the Worms finish their work on the bottom t…

** Before going any further, i do not advise anyone consuming " wild " Mushrooms w/ out first doing extensive research, and very technical proper identification** An interesting article related to a growing area of research involving the potential benefits of psycho-active Mushrooms. Once viewed with biased reservation, researchers are working to reverse the negative stigma often associated with this group of Fungi and further exploring the potential for new drugs and therapeutic applications that could be right under our noses. In the case of the Mushroom cited in the article below, potential new treatment options for pain relief, Epilepsy and Parkinson's Dise…

Texas weed?
by Reyes Vargas- 17 replies

Does anybody know what this weed is? I noticed this weed years back. This weed has a very pungent order. You will smell the weed long before you will be able to see it. It used to cover a lot of my yard but I reduced it by literally getting on my hands and knees taking the weed out and putting in a bag to discard. I'm pretty sure this is an invasive weed. When you step on it mow it it spreads the pungent smell and makes my head hurt.
