On popular demand (thank you Kim!! ), I'm beginning a new Big Island thread since we lost the old one in connection with the Palapa execution... A sudden decision this morning had me heading over to the Kona side with my wife, a 2.5 hour drive from Leilani Estates. From Hilo to Kailua-Kona there are 3 choices: Highway 11 around the southern part of the island (the longest way) Highway 19 around the northern part of the island and thru Waimea (well, close to the northern part anyway) Highway 200 - but always referred to as the Saddle Road - the shortest way, but also the most dangerous. Since I like a challenge, taking the Saddle Road was a "no brainer"...! The Sa…

Favorite Tee Shirts

Its raining, cloudy, grey and boring here. I am about to put my nose to the grindstone and work on my vampire novel some, but before I go, I thought maybe I'd like to see some of your fave T shirts. You know, the shirts in your collection that really show your personality. These are mine. I have to admit, I broke my "all black" rule to buy this shirt. But it didn't come in black (sigh...) so I had to just suck it up and get it anyway. I wore it at the gym this week and everyone got a huge kick out of it... Curious George...Passed out on Ether

The Demise of the Rose Bowl?
by bubba- 39 replies

Magician called on the Grapetronic with the following information pertinent to only those with interest in College football.Currently, the BCS includes four Bowls and the BCS Championship, played several days thereafter between the top two teams as nominated in early December at a rotating BCS site. The current BCS bowls are Rose,Orange,Sugar and Fiesta. Those who follow college football may recall the Cotton Bowl, which enjoyed great prominence for many years until it stubbornly refused to move from it's antiquated facility.Magician says that Cotton Bowl officials recognized their wicked ways and have now become incredibly flexible. The new format, very close to adoption …

Some questions were raised in the "Grouping ideas" thread in "Discussing Palm Trees" earlier today, so we took a ride thru our neighborhood a little while ago in order to get some photos. First, some general information. The Big Island of Hawaii consists of nine districts (clockwise, beginning in the south): Ka'u, South Kona, North Kona, South Kohala, North Kohala, Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo and Puna. Puna is about the size of Oahu and stretches from ocean on the SE side of the island up to the village of Volcano at 4,000 ft elevation. About 30,000 people live in Puna, and it's the fastest growing district on the island. Leilani Estates is one of several subdivisio…

Champagne, Chana masala, guitars...

My birthday was Saturday, so naturally on Friday I went to the tattoo parlor and spent 2 1/2 hours there. On Saturday afternoon, my husband told me to get ready to go out to dinner, and at about 5pm, a limosine pulled up in front of my house. About 10 minutes later 3 cars full of my friends pulled up. My husband went to the closet and pulled out a cooler filled with beer, wine and champagne and a picnic basket with a cake, wine glasses etc, and a bag filled with some of my fave CD's and DVD's and said, "Let's go!" We all jumped in the limo and started out. CHampagne corks started popping and the party commenced! After the initial toast we cranked the stereo and con…

LA HABRA SHOOTING THREAD DELETED
by PALM MOD- 14 replies
- 1.1k views
When the La Habra shooting thread started to wander into the area of gun control, I warned that such a discussion was really off topic, but more importantly political in nature, and not permitted. Since the only guns involved in this story were those carried by the police, I politely asked that you stick to comments pertaining to the shooting of Mr. Cho by the police, and refrain from your opinions about the merits (or lack thereof) of gun control. Since both the established guidelines and my specific warning continued to be ignored by a few, the thread was deleted. I have made note of those who made such action necessary.

Three Friends and a Stranger
by bubba- 1 reply

At one time, I used to play golf with some rugged/tattered sorts. One of the favorite involved locating a "newbie"and thereafter quickly picking partners.Obviously, two friends would always form one team. The other friend was indeed a plant, who played just convincingly enough to cause his team and partner(said stranger)to barely loose or even to loose bigtime. This tactic can be used sucessfully in a multitude of venues/theatres.Any poster knowledgeable about this little game?

Who has the biggest head? 1 2 3
by MattyB- 86 replies

Try and guess who has the biggest head. At the end the 10 subjects will report the results. Let's see how we measure up. Measure your heads circumference at forehead level. This is clearly a palm related topic because a bigger head holds more palms. Wow, I am bored. Mod Edit: Sorry Matty --- "clearly a palm related topic because a bigger head holds more palms" won't get past this moderator. Hence, it's moved to "Ohana Nui." Good thing you didn't include me in the poll.

Ever get burned on trades?
by Gonzer- 15 replies
- 1.3k views
Have you ever been victimized by folks who never seem to remember the transaction? Be it plants, books, or what-not, how many times do these people have to be "nudged" into reciprocating? Weeks and months down the line you say something like "How's that plant I gave you growing?" or "I've got the room now" (hint, hint) and no light bulb goes off in their head! If you're not the confrontational type it can be frustrating but at least it shows a person's true character. Slight vent but thanks.

I was on the way into work this morning, stopped behind a car with a Louisiana "Save the Black Bear" license plate. I never paid much attention to it before, but noticed today the bear was stepping on a "Saw Palmetto" on which they are dependent. Anyone had other palm on license plates in their state.

Have you ever been stalked? 1 2
by metalfan- 40 replies

My daughter and I are being stalked. But its not what you think. Nothing evil (at least I don't think so). Actually, it may be my daughter and my Porsche that are being stalked. I don't want to take credit for anything here, LOL. We drive the same stretch of road on the way to and from almost everywhere we go about 10-12 times a day. I drive 2 cars, depending on the weather and the errand: a Toyota 4Runner and a Porsche Boxter S. I never drive the Porsche with the top UP. If I am gonna be in that car, the top is DOWN. Even if I have to wear a sweater. That's just the way it is. We have apparently been "spotted" by two youngish (I guess they are 20ish, hopefully …
