First Sodom, then Mount Pleasant, then Levyville
by DoomsDave- 9 replies
- 2.3k views
Howdyall: Happened to be surfing a bit, and found this website relating to Levy County, Florida. CLICK HERE I must say, the Levyites have a sense of humor, to admit all of this in a web site . . . . "Levy County and its first County Seat, Levyville, was named for him in 1845, prior to his changing his name to David Levy Yulee. Except for a matter of timing, our county would have been named Yulee County. Levyville was first called Sodom, then later Mount Pleasant, but at a meeting of the Board of County Commissioners in 1856, it was ordered to be named Levyville." After that, the seat was moved to Bronson. Anyone have any idea why…

Valentines Day
by Walter John- 12 replies
So who does the valentine card/flower thing ? It does have an interesting history. There was this roman priest or bishop who arranged secret marriages for the soldiers who weren't allowed to marry because the emperor thought that married soldiers were lame and that single dudes would be better soldiers. And then he was discovered and thrown in jail awaiting execution and he wrote a note to somebody with the signature , from your funny palm loving valentine, and so to this day people send valentine day cards and buy palms. Apparently.

Howdyall: Oh, once in a while, things get a wee bit wierd here in the Dark Tower, and you see something even wierder, and well . . . . Here's an outfit that, apparently, is being shown as "ready to wear" in a fashion show. I realize that some irony comes with the territory (I HOPE, anyway! ??? ) But here it is. Venison, anyone?

John D.McArthur and Walt Disney
by bubba- 7 replies
- 1.2k views
John D.McArthur was a true capitalist, who acquired a life insurance company out of bankruptcy, and turned it into one of the most profitable buisnesses in the US(Banker's Life). He bored quickly and moved to Florida around 1960.Specifically,he acquired the run down Colonades Hotel on Singer Island and let it run down more.He acquired a run down apartment building next door, where he and his wife Catharine lived. Many stories abound about this legendary figure in Palm Beach. He conducted most of his buisness in a somewhat delapidated coffee shop in the Hotel and most of his deals were handwritten on the back of napkins. His passion was directed with full fury to the acquis…

Howdyall: The hammocks are a full-blown community of flora and fauna unique to South Florida. This ain' Newport Beach, for sure. So, forgive my odd bad shot, and I'll show some of the other denizens of the hammocks . . . . . This looks like an oddball fern, with the Shoe for scale. Anyone know what it is?

Eating Indonesian

Howdyall: Took a trip over the hill and went to China, where I ate at this Indonesian place, which, among much else had an imaginative design to the centre in which it was located. Note how the sun backlights the sign. Brilliant! Both the sun and the idea.

Vacation Ideas??
by JakeK- 18 replies
- 1.3k views
Many of us here on the board have traveled to some really exotic places, so I'm looking for some suggestions. I purchased a week of vacation this year so now I have 15 days of vacation. I'm looking for suggestions on where to spend around 6-8 of those days. I found r/t airfare from Cincinnati to Lima Peru for $850, $900 to Istanbul, $1,200 to Morocco, $850 to London, and $950 to Hawaii. Cincinnati is the most expensive airport to fly out of in the United States by a wide margin, so these prices may not sound like deals to anyone. My entire budget is in the $2,000-$2,200 range, I'm looking to travel in September-October.

Magnificent Australian Parrots 1 2
by Tess- 44 replies
- 3.9k views
In addition to palms, I love parrots. My local Public Broadcasting Station recently aired the most facinating program on parrots in Australia titled: Parrots in the land of OZ. I was amazed at the large number of varieties (many that I had never seen or heard of before) that live on the continent. In addition to having some excellent palm growing regions, I now see that OZ has some of my favorite birds. I think I need to move! In the meantime, would any Australians care to share a parrot story or pictures? Do you have parrots in your area? Do you love them? Do you hate them (they can be quite noisy, and they can do a number on farmers fields)? I'd also l…

Artwork at Fairchild
by DoomsDave- 15 replies

One of the things that all the big botanical gardens are tyring to do is become a sort of al fresco museum for artwork by various artists. Sometimes, they even display them indoors. I thought these pieces were compelling, if expensive. ($5,00 each, more or less). I suspect someone here can give us the 411 on these . . . .
