The Signature Plants of Your Homescape
by DoomsDave- 21 replies
- 1.6k views
Howdyall: So, Elvis has come to Earth and taken you aboard his spaceship and after a few dozen orbits, you both get dizzy, and he takes you home. But, aside from being dizzy, he and his pilot appear a bit buzzed, so you seek reassurance that you really are home again, e.g., in Oakland California, and not Auckland, New Zealand (or vice versa). In Southern California, I see the signature plants of the local landscape include: Cupressus sempervirens var. "Stricta" or, as the Cable Guy would say "Eye-TALLIAN SIGH-press".

Gainesville Marathon/HalfM tomorrow
by metalfan- 11 replies
- 1.1k views
Wish us luck, we're running the 5 Points of Life Half Marathon tomorrow bright and early. Race starts at 7am which is a good thing as the forecast high for tomorrow is almost 80F. I am hoping to run the 13.2 miles in under 2 hours, somewhere between 1:45-1:59, LOL. We'll see. The last time I did this race my time was 2 hours 8 minutes. Should be a nice day for it, all the rain, hail and other severe weather blew through last night (we got almost 2.5 inches of rain!) and there is a 0% chance for precip tomorrow. Hubby will be running the half as a training run for Boston in April, but since he's so much quicker than me I'll be dogging him to the finish.

Slide Show of my jungle
by Walter John- 22 replies
- 1.1k views
Hi folks, I'm putting together a slide show of recent photos of the palm gardens around my house, I affectionately refer to as my jungle. I always use some background music or tunes and was wondering if anybody has some ideas on songs that would suit a palm slide show, for example "Gone Troppo" by George Harrison, ah what's another example, "Run through the jungle" Creedence etc etc. Please give me some ideas. The slide show would go for about 20 to 25 minutes, so need about 5 or 6 songs. Thanks

Castro's Stepping Down
by DoomsDave- 5 replies
Howdyall: By now the news is all over the place: Fidel Castro is stepping down in Cuba. Wow! That's a switch. Most dictators have to be carried out in a pine box, maybe or maybe not having been hung by the heels first. So, what's going to happen, next? Please, don't bash each other. Please. This isn't political -- this is historic. (Mr. Mod, if you think this is out of line go ahead and dump it. But, I'll bet you're curious, too . . . . ) Any thoughts sought. Anyone read of any reports of what Cubans in Cuba think of this? Hope we can have some cool discussions, as we read by the lights of our respective noses on this fine, mellow Wedne…

Hi all My family and I are considering moving to Australia, not Perth (sorry Jay and Ty, bit hot in summer there for us...we would rather take the humidty) more Brissie/Gold Coast QLD area. Do any of our Australian members know of employment agencies that recruit overseas people? I have done a search and got hammered with thousands of returns and am really not sure where to start! First Sodom, then Mount Pleasant, then Levyville
by DoomsDave- 9 replies
- 2.3k views
Howdyall: Happened to be surfing a bit, and found this website relating to Levy County, Florida. CLICK HERE I must say, the Levyites have a sense of humor, to admit all of this in a web site . . . . "Levy County and its first County Seat, Levyville, was named for him in 1845, prior to his changing his name to David Levy Yulee. Except for a matter of timing, our county would have been named Yulee County. Levyville was first called Sodom, then later Mount Pleasant, but at a meeting of the Board of County Commissioners in 1856, it was ordered to be named Levyville." After that, the seat was moved to Bronson. Anyone have any idea why…
