WHOLE HOUSE FANS 1 2
by DoomsDave- 45 replies
- 5.7k views
Howdyall, I'm considering installing a whole house fan that mounts in the ceiling and sucks hot (or cold) air out into the attic, and out the vents. I'm looking for something large, with enough suck to clear out a 2400 square foot house, with about 6,000 cubic feet per minute capacity. This will require making a hole in my ceiling to install it, plus possibly also adding extra vents to ensure that there's enough vent space for the air to go. Anyone have any thoughts, experiences, cautionary tales? What, for example, is the difference from the practical standpoint of a direct drive or belt drive fan? How hard are they to repair, and what is most likely to g…

Palms, Fishing, Drinking and...is there more? 1 2
by Jeff Searle- 45 replies

A few weeks back, my wife Andrea, our good friend Lynn and myself drove down to Cudjoe Key for a long weekend of fishing, drinking, boating and... some general partying you might say. For those of you that don't know, Cudjoe Key is 23 miles out of Key West, so it's almost down at the end of the Florida Keys. We would be staying with our good friends and Palm Forum members, Judy and Jim Glock. Here's our gracious host, Jim and Judy. Jeff EDIT....Ok, another stupid screw-up on my part. Jim and Judy are on the right I think you all know who the dumb one is on the left.

US Sugar/Florida Land Purchase 1 2
by palmmermaid- 45 replies
- 3.1k views
In case the rest of the world isn't aware, Florida agreed yesterday to buy 185K acres of land in the Everglades from US Sugar. If a swap with Florida Crystals can be arranged, the state will have the land to restore the southern flow of water from Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades. This would eliminate the flows to the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchie rivers and put it back to a more natural state. This is a really big deal. I am sure though that US Sugar saw the handwriting on the wall or should I say the end of the muck. The land that is so rich for farming is literally disappearing. The muck is only so deep and each year is less. If you drive by the old pumping st…

Homeowner's Association? 1 2
by TikiRick- 45 replies

Are you in a neighborhood that is part of a Homeowner's Association? We are attempting to revamp ours but honestly, it is more of a "club" than anything else. Our HOA has no legally binding authority to enforce anything and it is strictly volunteer. Annual dues are only $150.00. There are million dollar homes in this neighborhood, however, some original owners are on a fixed income and $150 to them is more than they can afford. Only those who pay, can vote for anything. In the past, only about 70 homes have participated. There are 147 homes in my neighborhood and we are bordered by a waterway to the east and a major thoroughfare to the west. There is only one way in an…

You're invited to our BBQ 1 2

Save the date, we're having a BBQ at the end of the month. It's been 2 years since we had our housewarming BBQ and it was a blast. We saw lot's of familiar faces and got to meet several new ones. Send me a PM sometime in the next few weeks if you're planning on coming so I know how many dogs and burgers to get. I'll try not to burn the hot dogs this time. Will Paul drop the camera in the bird bath again? Will BS Man be wearing shorts? (the answer to that determines whether you bring your sunglasses or not). Will Wayne solve all of my plants nutrient deficiencies? Will Terry bring his famous BBQ ribs (Yummmmmmm)? Will Wal make a special guest appearance via sa…

The tourists in your neighborhood 1 2

I'm talking about seasonal holidaymakers. For us, it's Germans and Dutch. Motril is a popular destination for many wanting a quiet, winter holiday by the sea. Every year between October and April, the local campsites are entirely occupied by retired couples who make the exodus from northern Europe, driving state of the art motorhomes. We get a few English, Belgians & Portuguese, and perhaps one or two French visiting as well.

Now I think I have them under control but maybe I should reconsider/ My criminal plants are: Iris pseudacorus 'Yellow Flag Iris' I keep it in my water garden (in a pot to control it) Persecaria capitata 'Pink Knotweed' It is between flagstones in my sideyard. I think I'll have to look around and see what else is invasive. What do you have?

Howdyall: Some of you may recall an earlier post concerning my kitten-cat, the Devil, pictured below. He's cute, and he's a cat, which means his play is training for the kill. So far, he's mostly stuffed his kibble-hole with kitty-cat kibble. But . . . .

Magnificent Australian Parrots 1 2
by Tess- 44 replies
- 3.9k views
In addition to palms, I love parrots. My local Public Broadcasting Station recently aired the most facinating program on parrots in Australia titled: Parrots in the land of OZ. I was amazed at the large number of varieties (many that I had never seen or heard of before) that live on the continent. In addition to having some excellent palm growing regions, I now see that OZ has some of my favorite birds. I think I need to move! In the meantime, would any Australians care to share a parrot story or pictures? Do you have parrots in your area? Do you love them? Do you hate them (they can be quite noisy, and they can do a number on farmers fields)? I'd also l…

Well let me start by saying that if you don't live adjacent to a canyon reserve in San Diego stay away and if you do good luck . I mentioned recently in Matty B's stage 2 water restriction post a little bit about how forest rangers and friends (fiends) of the canyon organization are going through the canyons and any plant that is not native they are tagging for removal. Well I had hoped that they would just go away but today the big shoe dropped in the form of a letter from the Tri canyon senior park ranger complete with digi pics from the ground and google earth. The letter said that I was in violation of code compliance from "encroachment onto City of San Diego open S…

Hi all. I was just enjoying this tasty beer of mine and thought I'd see if anyone else had some recommendations. I like to try to stick to micro brews and I always enjoy finding something new. Since we have a BevMo in town, it provides me LOTS of opportunities to try new things, domestic and imported. Hopefully we can all steal each others' favorite beers (that's my goal, anyways) to try for ourselves. Your suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!! I Like beers with a lot of hops and high IBU's. I'm currently drinking Acme IPA, made by North Coast Brewing. Really good. Another really good IPA if you can get it is Racer 5 IPA, made by Bear Republic.

Shark attack in San Diego County 1 2

This morning a man was attacked by what appeared to be a great white shark off Solana beach in San Diego County. STORY HERE Of more importance to the shark than the guy was the fact that the shark apparently spit the guy out after it realized he wasn't a seal. Hmm. Maybe wearing a white wetsuit might stop attacks? I recall somewhere that Japanese pearl divers wore white amazugis to scare off the sharks. Maybe there is something to that? Condolences, as always to the victim's family. dave

Aviation - what keeps me busy.... 1 2

With all the discussion going on in the other thread about PSSC (SoCal) and the Palm Journal, I thought it was quite a coincidence that just yesterday I reached a substantial milestone in publishing myself. In 1966 - 42 years ago - I decided to start a little aviation publication, more as a hobby than anything else. I only had 35 subscribers. I called it "Aviation-Letter", and began publishing it on a monthly basis. The number of subscribers kept growing, and as of issue #10 I had about 115 subscribers and decided to go for broke and have it printed at a real printshop, with photos (OK, B&W, but still). At the time I needed 500 subscribers to reach break-even - a numb…
