Say Thanks to the PALM MOD 1 2
by Kim- 2 followers

Do you enjoy PalmTalk? Is this a fun place to chat about palms? Do you learn anything here? If you can answer 'yes' to any of those questions, take a moment to say thanks to the PALM MOD who makes this forum run so smoothly. Most of us pop in here frequently and never give a second thought to what goes on behind the scenes. We don't know much about the forum software, we don't know what it costs to run the site, we don't know much about what the Moderator and PalmTalk Committee do to keep PalmTalk a friendly place. It is around ten years now (?) that Dean has been keeping the wheels turning here, and it seems like an appropriate time to say Thank You…

Since some asked about paying more for electricity, what do we pay? I note that the price of power varies very widely all over the place.

Adventures in home orcharding 1 2

From the first time I went to an apple orchard when I was young and picked an apple off the tree and ate it right there in the shade of the tree it grew on, something changed in me. Cutting out all the middle men and getting to the source directly became very desirable to me. I knew when I had a house, whatever land I had claim to would be used to grow some of the food I ate organically. Funny how life changes when you get to peek behind the curtain and get a real understanding of things. How wanting the best for the plants I grow, results in the fruit they produce being the best food I can eat, resulting in an overwhelming urge to not be a “normal” spoiled human being…

World war 2 1 2
by epicure3- 52 replies

I have been studying WW2 for years and was wondering if anyone here as an interest in that period of history. My focus has been mainly on the European Theater and, more specifically, the Russian/German conflict mainly because there is so much information and knowledge to gather that I haven't moved on to the Pacific Theater as of yet. While it was a devastating period for millions, it remains a fascinating look at a world long gone (hopefully). With the collapse of the Soviet Union, so much more information, not just propaganda, is now available....even online. The Russian-German front of the war (or the Eastern Front) was awesome (in a bad way) in that it was often a ba…

On Set w/ MattyB 1 2
by MattyB- 52 replies

I worked 2 days on a low budget pilot last week so I thought I'd share some pics. The plot basically consists of a guy who inherits 2 million dollars from his grandmother. The only stipulation for getting the money is that he needs to become completely eco-friendly. The conflict is that he's a beer drinkin, monster truck drivin', non recyclin', lazy American man! I play his best friend. It's a lead role for me, and even if the show never gets picked up, it'll be a nice credit for my resume and great footage for my reel. I work 2 more days next week so I'll continue the pix after that. Here's what we shot last week: Sound tech, Hanna and Director of Photography…

Boots ARE my dress shoes. Or at least I should say I have dress boots. The Ostrich are super comfortable. The most comfortable I ever owned were Kangeroo skin. Incredible comfort, but expensive and they didn't hold up well. Now I have to admit I am as hard on boots as I am on plants, and everything else for that matter. Same thing for Lizard skin boots. They just don't hold up well for me. I am surprised that Florida has not developed a great niche market for Iguana boots, or maybe they have. If so, I might bring home a pair from my upcoming conference and vacation combination. I looked at some Elephant skin boots, but they were like iron. We have a niche …

Bad 'Hoods in Florida 1 2
by DoomsDave- 51 replies

Howdyall: I'm going to be a totally dorky tourist, and, as ever, I know there's some bad 'hoods in Florida. Just like California! I hear Opa Locka's, well, rowdy, but gonna get a pic of their City Hall. So, tell me where they are (streets, city, etc.) and say, specifically why. That way, I can avoid them. Or not. But at least know where they are. Anyone? dave

Songs you like with USA States or towns in the title 1 2

Music lovers, here's another music thread you are bound to like. I thought about this idea the other day for a trivia question in the trivia comp I was in. For some reason, USA states or cities/towns seem to roll nicely in songs. I wondered what would be the most liked. So I'll start this thread and after a few weeks list up the most popular. My initial list of top 10 songs with artist (prolly list another fer sure and certain). These are not in any particular order. Alabahma - Neil Young California Dreaming - Mammas and the Pappas Ohio - Crosby Stills Nash and Young Wheelin' West Virginia - Neil Sedaka Florida - Modest Mouse Massachusetts - The Bee Gees San Fran…

Garden Names 1 2
by Kim- 51 replies
- 3.9k views
Amongst our fellow palm-crazed forum members, I notice a few, at least, have bestowed names on their gardens. So we have "Jackson's Jungle" at Wal's, named after his late companion, Jackson, a beloved canine. Then we have Rock Ridge Ranch from Gtlevine, which is a fitting description of the terrain. Also, MattyB is developing Manambe Lavaka, which is Malagasy for...er,...something to do with a garden. It sounds good. Then there is the eponymous Lundkvist Palm Garden, no explanation needed. Many large gardens are named after the people who started them: Huntington, Fairchild. But then you have Lotusland, named for the flowers growing in the pond, and possibly refere…

Why can we eat some animals and not others? 1 2
by Mandrew968- 51 replies

I recently read an article online, about a California man accused of killing and eating cats. Apparently, using animals commonly kept as pets or companions as food is against the law in California... There are certain food items that I object to eating, ethically(turtles and tortoises as well as whales and dolphins), but I wouldn't force my ethics on another. I understand if a creature is endangered, they should be protected from hungry mouths, but cats and dogs are constantly being euthanized, around the world, due to there being too many of them. Asian countries eat some strange things--the French often eat horse meat(it's illegal to kill a horse for food in South Fl…

Another wall at Manambe Lavaka 1 2
by MattyB- 1 follower

I just finished another retaining wall to create a flat seating area down below the house. This is the last of the walls for a while. I'm pooped! It takes a quite a bit of work just to get a 10' diameter flat spot around here but it's well worth it to have a nice perch to sit and relax on. I'll let the backfill settle and compact over the Winter rains and then level the top surface with some nice compacted gold DG. Next project is creating the cactus and succulent garden below the seating area. I'll be using lots of rock borders and gravel walways. I'm gonna make use of the unlimited rock supply I have around here.

Please indulge me. I have thought about starting this for the last year or so & now I am finally getting around to it. Some of you might find this interesting & some may pass right over it, that's what's great about this sub-forum! I am going to post each time I go to a concert with the main bands and any openers I find really interesting. I may or may not post some of my thoughts afterwards. Kind of an e-diary, if you will. I think it would be fantastic if some of you wanted to comment on individual bands, if/when you have seen them or even some of the recent concerts you have gone to. If you want to participate, don't worry about "hijacking" my thread, the "mor…

Aloha Airlines 1 2

Sad news for Hawaii and Aloha Airlines and its employees and customers. They filed for Chapter 11 bankrupcty just over a week ago, two years after getting out of Chapter 11, but continued to operate. However, today they announced that all passenger operations will be shut down as of tomorrow evening, Monday March 31st. All inter-island flights will operate tomorrow, Monday, and all flights from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii will also operate, but apparently the Hawaii-Mainland flights have been cancelled. Governor Lingle has just made an announcement that she's going to try to have them operate beyond Monday by coming up with some temporary financing. My guess is that all …

I thought it was an excellent show, and I was glad to see a lot of my favorites again, and I thought that it was odd that Jonny Fairplay did that. I really Like Yao-man. I think its gonna be a great season. Edit- that should be VS favorites. Grrrrrr. Zac

Some questions were raised in the "Grouping ideas" thread in "Discussing Palm Trees" earlier today, so we took a ride thru our neighborhood a little while ago in order to get some photos. First, some general information. The Big Island of Hawaii consists of nine districts (clockwise, beginning in the south): Ka'u, South Kona, North Kona, South Kohala, North Kohala, Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo and Puna. Puna is about the size of Oahu and stretches from ocean on the SE side of the island up to the village of Volcano at 4,000 ft elevation. About 30,000 people live in Puna, and it's the fastest growing district on the island. Leilani Estates is one of several subdivisio…
