The sounds of Uranus from space
by John in Andalucia- 39 replies

Consider the vastness of space, and the cold, distant planets as old as time itself. It's quite eerie to hear Uranus transmitting such lonely vibrations. Enjoy.. http://www.scrapeup.com/video.php?theid=41844

As a dedicated flyfisher I'm very interested in fish from other parts of the world. I catch pike, zander, perch, rudd, roach and some other freshwater species in and around Amsterdam. Pictures of a few will follow soon. Please share your fish!

Puerto Rican Pampered Feline

As many of you know, I am a retired veterinarian. Predictably I had always had multiple pets. However when I made a 7 year plan to retire and move to Puerto Rico I stopped adopting animals in Virginia. After arriving here in 2015 I realized that there were neighborhood dogs, no way to securely fence my 7 acres and the distinct chance I would need to relocate so did not add any pets. A few months after I moved to my larger farm here in 2017, hurricane Maria's visit plus plans for travel further postponed adding a cat or dog. Not long after the Biennial I planned a week long bike riding trip. The day before I met three other members of a PR plant society to c…

Would you cross this bridge?
by Jeff in St Pete- 39 replies

Yesterday I had to take the car to my mechanic. He works at a garage just outside of Quepos over the Paquita Bridge. From what I have been told, this old train bridge was condemned in Baltimore back in the 40's or 50's. It was shipped here and has been in use ever since. At one time, Quepos was a banana town and the train used to come into town, load up with bananas, and then take them to the port. Eventually the railroad tracks were turned into a road but they never built a new bridge. One is under construction now (finally!) but it will probably be a couple years until it is finished. In the meantime, everyone crosses this bridge to enter Quepos from the north (c…

Magician called on the Grapetronic with the following information pertinent to only those with interest in College football.Currently, the BCS includes four Bowls and the BCS Championship, played several days thereafter between the top two teams as nominated in early December at a rotating BCS site. The current BCS bowls are Rose,Orange,Sugar and Fiesta. Those who follow college football may recall the Cotton Bowl, which enjoyed great prominence for many years until it stubbornly refused to move from it's antiquated facility.Magician says that Cotton Bowl officials recognized their wicked ways and have now become incredibly flexible. The new format, very close to adoption …

Howdyall: I hate HOAs, and this case illustrates one of the reasons why. This also illustrates the risks and rewards of suing one. Most HOA agreements have attorney fees clauses in them, which say that the loser pays the winner's fees. Those fees can be a lot. In this case, they could bankrupt the HOA. How's THAT for a kick in the head? http://www.tampabay....ciation/1253895 partial quote below bold added: "NEW TAMPA — In January 2002, the Pebble Creek Homeowners Association dispatched a lawn crew to a couple's property to replace sod that had died during a record drought. Then they billed the homeowners for the job. Retired police captain Ed Simm…

Please, no rants. Just wondering if anyone is directly affected. There are many indirect effects, such as the National Parks being closed, all the Smithsonian museums closed, and so on. So far, nothing affects me directly, but how about you?

Alligator hunting

Moved to a new house about a year and a half ago and it is one lot over from one of the lakes that the state wildlife commission allows alligator hunting on. The season lasts three weeks, broken up into single weeks for each permit. Permits are "won" in a lottery system. We applied for the lake behind my house and ended up with a permit for the first week. Each permit allows you to take 2 alligators. Permit totals each year for a specific area or lake are determined by state wildlife officials through an annual population survey. These hunts supposed to keep the burgeoning alligator population in check. I really don't know how this is determined. We ended up gett…

2010 Winter Olympics

Unless you live in a cave somewhere, the 2010 Winter Olympics are about to begin this friday. I personally enjoy watching the games even though I never grew up in cold weather, let alone in areas that see snowfall every year. Some of my favorite sports include hockey, some of the downhill skiing events, snowboarding, and bobsleding. Do you remember the Jamaican Bobsled team? With such a large worldwide membership ( many from cooler climates) I would like to know who's getting ready to watch some olympics? What's some of your favorite sports, and, has anyone ever attended a winter olympics and where? Jeff

Rainwater Catchment systems in Hawaii
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

This is a great question for folks in Hawaii. Due to the California drought, we installed a major rainwater catchment system. Our tanks are full, and for the most part I had been using sump pumps to water the garden. But now we want to disconnect the house water from the garden due to the heavy water restrictions and run the irrigation system entirely from our water harvesting system. The garden needs to be 100% independent from city water, that's our goal. What sort of pumps do folks in Hawaii use, and what's the best filtering system available? I've been looking at Grunfos pumps, which provide water pressure on demand, but I am curious what folks on the East side of the…

How do you feel about the new science of De Extinction?

The smilodon, Carolina Parakeet, thylacine, Dodo bird, passenger pigeon, Stellar's sea cow, Caribbean monk seal, Moa birds, Elephant bird, mouth brooding frogs, mastodons, Giant sloth species and, not last nor least, mammoths of all species parially represent those exctinct animals that which might be brought back to life, via a few De Extinction methods. However, there is still debate about whether this is the correct path to go down. I would like to know how our very smart group of Palmtalkers feels about this subject...

The American Indian
by bubba- 37 replies

Re-reading some old Philosoph's and discussion of the Western European's introduction of the Concept of Land Ownership to the American Indian. The American Indian had absolutely no ability whatsoever to conceptualize the idea of an individual's ownership of land.In the Indian's mind, this was sheer lunacy. The land could not be owned anymore than the air.The land could provide life, prompt life, end life but the Indians had no egomanical belief that they could in some way domineer their way into anything remotely resembling ownership. In their belief system, they were no more than Dancing Ghosts whose Corporeal existence emanated from the land and whose Corporeal existence would…

My lovely dog is dead :(

The day before yesterday, in just 6 hours, my healthy dog got paralyzed 4 legs, he could not eat and drink, pee, the disease went down within an hour. We took him to the clinic at once, but there he quickly lost consciousness and had a very large brain swelling and died. A stroke was found. We were so notified. We can not be reconciled with the fact that yesterday he was still about that, and he is gone. Empty seat, no stroking his soft hair and mounth. I am shocked and distraught by myself and my family. He was crossbreed border collie and Scottish sheep-dog.

Fire at Gary L's
by Carlo Morici- 37 replies

I went up to Gary's place today to help him get ready to occupy his guest house until his main house is ready for people. (Good thing he just finished his guest/moms house last week!) I have to say the most striking thing is how blessed and lucky Gary and his family are!! As I drove to Garys place, I passed acres of what was dense riverbed growth, now just tree limbs. I finally could see the topography of the valley below his house. I went further up the hill and started seeing homes just burned to the ground. There were a fair amount of trees and now that has been greatly reduced. It's amazing that there was little rhyme or reason to where the fire went, s…

Seriously Hot Peppers

This weekend I went over to meet Tom Broome, owner of Cycad Jungle, in Lakeland. He's a great guy and has a huge variety of beautiful cycads. He is a cycad expert and is very happy to share information about growing them. I picked up a bag of his famous cycad fertilizer and a little cycad beauty to take home. Turns out he grows and sells hot peppers too! These are not your ordinary hot peppers; these are 'Man vs. Food' kinda hot peppers. I got a variety of fresh peppers along with some of his homemade pepper powder. I made a dip with one of his Ghost peppers last night. Awesome!! I highly recommend giving these peppers a try but be careful...one variety he…
