The Emerald Desert, Take 2, Part 3: Island Oasis in the Sky
by Silas_Sancona- 4 replies

Some views from the trip to Madera Canyon.. As mentioned in the Plant related threads, Madera Canyon sits in one of the Sky High, desert " Islands " which bridge the divide between southern rim of the Colorado Plateau, Mountains of far eastern Arizona / Gila Mountains of south central New Mexico, and the Sierra Madre Occidental / Mexican Plateau, providing a place of refuge for plants and animals which could not survive life in the deserts below. These islands are also where one will find creatures which either reach their northern limit, or may be exploring new territory north of where they might occur in northern Mexico. Madera Canyon is a world renowned, crow…

Donations to help Veterans

Every January for the past few years I have been sending $100 to the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). Every month I get something from them asking for more and they include Xmas/Birthday cards, note pads, calendars etc. Has anyone here know of anyone that they have helped? I'm beginning to wonder if the VFW is really a Chinese fund raising organization as EVERYTHING the send me seems to be made in China. Talked to another Vet the other day. He has been doing the same with the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and he gets tons of the same CRAP every month. Do these organizations really HELP Vets? Or are they…

Stange Dream

I was approached by an attractive young lady, her fiancé and advisor regarding a real estate transaction. She explained to me that she was desirous of doing a 1031 exchange with a large citrus farm that she owned in Inyo County. I had heard the name Inyo and knew it was in California but was suspicious. suddenly, instead of being in a law office, I was in a very large library that I had never seen before. I was looking for a simple map of California to confirm the location of Inyo County and whether or not a large citrus farm could exist in that area. I searched all over the library for a simple map of California but could not locate it. I kept looking for librarians…

RIP HRH Queen Elizabeth 11

It's a sad day indeed. At 58 years old I've only known Queen Elizabeth as Queen of Australia, she's been the constant. We've gone through 16 Prime Ministers during her reign but she was the one that never changed. A very sad day.

Recommended Books?
by William Ryan- 2 replies

Hi All, I am looking for some garden design inspiration, and was wondering what everyone's favorite books are on this subject. I manage a small botanical garden in North San Diego county (zones 10a/10b) and am always interested in learning more and developing my skills. We have a lot of unused space to fill. I love working with palms, cycads, and all sorts of tropical understory plants. I am not opposed to more general recommendations, but I am especially interested in works focusing on designing with tropical and subtropical plants. Some books that I have read and enjoyed on the subject: Designing with Palms, Jason DeWees (very inspirational and informative, h…

The very recent 'Palm trees in Minecraft' topic made me think of some of the more realistic and possibly identifiable Palm trees I've seen in PC games. There have been a few, but one group stood out for me when first encountering them in the game, Path of Exile. As a Palm nut, I did a serious double take when encountering them and I had to photograph... err... screenshot them; often in a hurry due to combat. The background design artist of the game must have used real species as a base, as they are very realistic. The game's developer, Grinding Gear Games, is based in New Zealand, so maybe that had something to do with the desire for palmy accuracy... - I…

Best high quality garden spades and such.

So I broke another cheapo shovel. I think it’s time to upgrade to some tools that may last a lifetime. I’m looking for shovels/spades for transplanting and general digging work. I know that there are many full metal options. Do any of you have some recommendations. Price is not a concern, if it’s the last ones I buy I’m good with that. Thanks.

The Emerald Desert, Take 2: Pt.1 ..Hilltop Oasis and Boulder Oceans
by Silas_Sancona- 3 replies

We wait for it every year, ..and suffer through punishing heat to get there. While the sight of the Deserts here in Arizona ..and surrounding areas of the Southwestern U.S. often greet the quick visit with a rather bleak and thirsty looking landscape most of the year, there are two times when, with just the right amount of rain magic, everything thirsty comes back to life and one wonders if they have somehow wandered hundreds of miles south, east, or west where landscapes during the summer ..or spring, can be greener. While things tend to stay greener year round higher up in the mountains, many areas below roughly 5,000ft rely on adequate rainfall to bring life ba…

Hawaiian food?

On Wednesday our CEO is taking us for a meal to celebrate us hitting a million last year. We're dining out locally, in Central London, close to the art gallery where I work. The choice of venue is called, 'Black Roe' and it's Hawaiian! I'm excited, to say the least. Would anyone care to recommend a dish from the menu for me, as a first timer to Hawaiian cuisine? The menu sounds fantastic: https://www.blackroe.com/ourmenus

Puerto Rican Pampered Feline

As many of you know, I am a retired veterinarian. Predictably I had always had multiple pets. However when I made a 7 year plan to retire and move to Puerto Rico I stopped adopting animals in Virginia. After arriving here in 2015 I realized that there were neighborhood dogs, no way to securely fence my 7 acres and the distinct chance I would need to relocate so did not add any pets. A few months after I moved to my larger farm here in 2017, hurricane Maria's visit plus plans for travel further postponed adding a cat or dog. Not long after the Biennial I planned a week long bike riding trip. The day before I met three other members of a PR plant society to c…

Jupiter's Great Red Spot
by Ed in Houston- 1 reply
Yep, there it is. The Great Red Spot is a persistent high-pressure region in the atmosphere of Jupiter, producing an anticyclonic storm that is one of the largest in the Solar System. Located 22 degrees south of Jupiter's equator, it produces wind-speeds up to 432 km/h (268 mph). Observations from 1665 to 1713 are believed to be of the same storm; if this is correct, it has existed for at least 357 years. It was next observed in September 1831, with 60 recorded observations between then and 1878, when continuous observations began.
