Castro's Stepping Down
by DoomsDave- 5 replies
Howdyall: By now the news is all over the place: Fidel Castro is stepping down in Cuba. Wow! That's a switch. Most dictators have to be carried out in a pine box, maybe or maybe not having been hung by the heels first. So, what's going to happen, next? Please, don't bash each other. Please. This isn't political -- this is historic. (Mr. Mod, if you think this is out of line go ahead and dump it. But, I'll bet you're curious, too . . . . ) Any thoughts sought. Anyone read of any reports of what Cubans in Cuba think of this? Hope we can have some cool discussions, as we read by the lights of our respective noses on this fine, mellow Wedne…

Hi all My family and I are considering moving to Australia, not Perth (sorry Jay and Ty, bit hot in summer there for us...we would rather take the humidty) more Brissie/Gold Coast QLD area. Do any of our Australian members know of employment agencies that recruit overseas people? I have done a search and got hammered with thousands of returns and am really not sure where to start! Thanks Dennis The Mrs and I

First Sodom, then Mount Pleasant, then Levyville
by DoomsDave- 9 replies
- 2.3k views
Howdyall: Happened to be surfing a bit, and found this website relating to Levy County, Florida. CLICK HERE I must say, the Levyites have a sense of humor, to admit all of this in a web site . . . . "Levy County and its first County Seat, Levyville, was named for him in 1845, prior to his changing his name to David Levy Yulee. Except for a matter of timing, our county would have been named Yulee County. Levyville was first called Sodom, then later Mount Pleasant, but at a meeting of the Board of County Commissioners in 1856, it was ordered to be named Levyville." After that, the seat was moved to Bronson. Anyone have any idea why…

Howdyall: Boy, oh boy, you're gonna think I've been into the datura seed on this one. The Wall Street Journal today had an article about white truffles in Italy and a market for them, yadda yadda yadda. So, has anyone here tasted them? White truffs? Or Black? What's the difference. Yummy from what I hear . . . dave

Valentines Day
by Walter John- 12 replies

So who does the valentine card/flower thing ? It does have an interesting history. There was this roman priest or bishop who arranged secret marriages for the soldiers who weren't allowed to marry because the emperor thought that married soldiers were lame and that single dudes would be better soldiers. And then he was discovered and thrown in jail awaiting execution and he wrote a note to somebody with the signature , from your funny palm loving valentine, and so to this day people send valentine day cards and buy palms. Apparently.

John D.McArthur and Walt Disney
by bubba- 7 replies

John D.McArthur was a true capitalist, who acquired a life insurance company out of bankruptcy, and turned it into one of the most profitable buisnesses in the US(Banker's Life). He bored quickly and moved to Florida around 1960.Specifically,he acquired the run down Colonades Hotel on Singer Island and let it run down more.He acquired a run down apartment building next door, where he and his wife Catharine lived. Many stories abound about this legendary figure in Palm Beach. He conducted most of his buisness in a somewhat delapidated coffee shop in the Hotel and most of his deals were handwritten on the back of napkins. His passion was directed with full fury to the acquis…

Tea Time
by realarch- 14 replies
- 1.2k views
One of my favorite things in life is a good cup of black tea, so I thought I might ask the tea drinkers which brands they prefer. I've tried various brands and tend to like 'Yorkshire' and 'Lifeboat' for bag tea and it's a crap shoot for loose tea which tends to be $$$. Like it english style as well. Are these teas swill? Any comments from across the pond or from 'down under'? Tim
