China and Pollution
by bubba- 14 replies

My oldest son just got back from a trip to China he won in Buisness School Competition. He,along with 150 students, spent their Spring Break in China, touring Industrial Facilities in Bejing and Shanghai. It was an incredibly interesting trip intellectually but very disturbing.Specifically,he was warned about the Air Pollution but had no idea what to truly expect.Upon arrival in Bejing,he felt faint getting off the plane and described the smell as a chemical fire.Bejing is approximately 18 million and hosts the Olympics this Summer. They have alot of work to do.I really don't see how it can be done. If Human Rights are also an issue, what my son witnessed in Tianaman(sp)Squ…

Tiger Woods

I know there are not many Golfers on this Board but what this young man has done is incredible. At the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando,he knocked in a 20+foot putt on the last hole to win by one shot and extend his Tournament winning streak to 7 in a row. This was almost the identical putt he had to beat Phil Michaelson at the 2004 Event. He has just passed Arnold Palmer in Career victories and is now tied with Ben Hogan. He tees it up in Miami at Doral for his next Tournament this week and I doubt even the arrival of the Polar Express and long underware in Miami can stop him.A true Phenom!

Can you say Mohawk

All this talk about Sunday's with the Fed and JP Morgan's take over of Bear Stearns have led to some winners and losers. In the Loser category, you have River-Boat Gambler,Joe Lewis.A Lyford Cay resident in the Bahamas(just like Sean/ 007)and purchaser of Isleworth in Orlando,he gambled that Bear Stearns stock would go higher when he purchased at $ 30.00 per share. With JP's takeover,he just lost $ 800,000,000.00. Not bad for a couple of days hard work.

Wall building
by iwan- 7 replies

Pictures of Steve's stucco walls reminded me of a project that I have been meaning to do, so which is cheaper, concrete block or wood framed stucco for garden walls from a materials standpoint? I know block will end up costing more since I will probably have to hire out the labor, but should last forever if done properly. I could handle the wood framed wall myself, but 200' of block wall would probably be torture on my back. What is the typical lifespan of a wood framed wall? OK you builders/landscape contractors out there, what do you say? Typical costs per linear foot for a 3-4' tall wall?

Brazil Nut Processing Plant
by amazondk- 12 replies
I was cruising down the street on the outskirts of Manaus today and came upon a small Brazil nut processing operation in front of a State Agricutural school. The area has a pretty large area of Brazil nut tree plantation. They are one of the symbols of our area and are very impressive. I have been meaning to stop and take some pictures for a while. Every time I pass I am too much of a hurry to stop. So, today I stopped and bought some freshly shelled Brazil nuts and a bag of local oranges. The sales stand for the operation. The orange sales are related but seperate. The Brazil nut has a shell as hard if not harder than a ripe coconut. There is one specif…

Forest Hill Plant Festival
by _Keith- 1 reply

Hey, this weekend is the Forest Hill Plant Festival in Forest Hill, Louisiana. And right down the road is the 7 mile long yard sale in Grand Coteau and Arnaudville. Anybody else going? Now of course, there are only two other Palmtalkers I know of from Louisiana on the message board. But I just thought I would post this anyway, then imagine all of the replies coming in from other folks going that I might meet up with there. Kind of a "I live in SoCal or SoFl" fantasy thing. You know. ROFL

Volcano update
by bgl- 23 replies
- 1.5k views
The Pu'u O'o eruption on the East Rift zone of Kilauea volcano has been ongoing (with a few minor interruptions) since 3 Jan. 1983, and during these 25 years the lava flow has been all over the map in lower Puna, and to a large degree wiping out the village of Kalapana in 1990 (about 190 homes were destroyed), and filling up Kaimu Bay out to about a quarter mile beyond the old shoreline. The active lava flow has been accessible to the public many times over this period. When MattyB and his wife were here almost a year ago, the three of us hiked out to the active lava flow, from inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. That was about a 2 hour hike in each direction over…

Building A Planetarium
by The Palm Nut- 3 replies

Hi As a committee member of the Port Macquarie Astronomical Association I have been asked to look into the feasibility study of establishing a planetarium in the Port Macquarie area. We hope to gain funding through various State and Federal departments. I will need information with regards to the cost of building a planetarium, fitting it out with the various projection technologies, and people that have been recently involved in building a planetarium. Any information in this regard would be most appreciated. Regards, Mike Jamison

Boyd Coddington passes away
by fastfeat- 3 replies

Just read that Boyd Coddington, car builder extraordinaire, whose shop was featured in cable's American Hot Rod, died Wed at 63. No cause of death was given. While people can dispute how good a car builder he was, I was impressed by the fact that he opened up his shop in Stanton, CA to a free public tour on at least one weekend a year. (Don't know if this is still done). Everyone was welcome, and he and his staff were very gracious to everyone who came by. RIP.

what are these lizards?
by Eric in Orlando- 9 replies
- 1.2k views
At the Coral Castle in Homestead I saw a couple of kinds of lizards, didn't know what they are. The first is the smaller, it was a brown with green markings on the head. They are a little bigger than the Brown or Cuban Anoles. They were quick, couldn't get a photo. The 2nd one is the larger, I saw some over a foot long. These were braver but still coudn't catch one. These are in the photos below;

Dee-Gee, Decomposed Granite
by DoomsDave- 11 replies
- 2.3k views
As many of you know, or suspect, there's a type of soil here in So-Cal called Dee-Gee, Dee and Gee, or Decomposed Granite, which is actually made up of particles of granite. Which, upon first blush, blew my feeble mind. You make monuments, countertops, headstones-rocks-of-ages out of granite, so how [expletive] can it decompose? A good question, which I've known the answer to for a while. And illustrate, after my trip to Lake Elsinore, in the hot-beating heart of the DG belt. Here's a boulder, weathered by sun and wind. A perfect candidate.

Movie stars tackling Deer in Florida
by bubba- 4 replies
"One of my friends had an airboat and one of the things we did that nobody believes to this day was to tackle deer from the side of an airboat. You'd see one,and you'd try to get the air boat up alongside of him,and you'd dive out and grab him and roll in the water, and then of course,he would win.I mean ,a deer is a handful! But we were 16 years old and thought we were immortal.Because of the water it was sort of even for about five minutes, and you could always let them go,but they would cut our legs to ribbons with their hooves. We didn't do this to little does or fawns,of course, but if it was a pretty good-sized deer,it became a real contest. We never hurt a deer or tried t…

Here is a film about the oil peek crisis that I found very interesting. It has sub-titles in french but I think google has a pure english version. It sure makes me glad I fertilize with only ecological material. Enjoy the film. Jason http://video.google.fr/videoplay?docid=-63...77868&hl=fr
