2020 ..In a nutshell..
by Silas_Sancona- 2 replies

Whether its because of all the canceled plant sales we could have attended, plants we couldn't purchase, wacky weather events.. or the many other reasons to blame it for, No doubt most of us are ready to watch this year quickly disappear in the rear view mirror.. In the mean time, saw this video, courtesy of Zero Gravity media, and thought i'd share here.. ...Totally relatable, lol

Fix or cover the stucco, Bucko . . .
by DoomsDave- 3 replies

My house is 74 years old, and time has worked some negative character to it. Including stucco damage and earthquake cracks to same. I've heard competing ideas: one is to cover the stucco with siding, the other is to fix the stucco. Anyone who has any thoughts, share away!

Hiking Ontario Peak
by Sr. Califas- 7 replies

About 2 weeks ago picked a fabulous day to hike in our local mountains. The peaks Ontario and Cucamonga are two of the most prominent peaks visible from Orange, L.A. and San Bernardino counties. There are plenty of websites that can offer you detailed information about to the hiking trails and the sights and scenes included within. I just wanted to share a some pictures I took on my way up to the top of Ontario Peak. Pictures of fauna always came out blurry, but I was able to do a decent job with the flora and topography. The manzanita was thriving! View looking west. Over looking the I.E. wher…

garden signage Garden Signs

If my Coconut palms get large enough, I'll be putting up a few of those "Falling Coconut" signs to warn people where not to step. While I was checking the different varieties of signs for this purpose, I wanted to see some examples of custom signage people put in their gardens in the beds, paths, or other areas. Thought about getting this one made for the area under the oak canopy:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/tripideas/the-huntington-reopens-to-the-public/ar-BB16draD?li=BBnbfcL&ocid=spartan-ntp-feeds Hooray, scream, make an appointment first, but if you go, take lots of pictures! The art galleries are closed, but, well, I suspect most of us here won't worry much about that. I beg your pardon, this is also a killer rose-garden . . .

R I P Benny Mardones

Ran across this, and noted with sorrow. Mr. M's big song "Into the Night" was a monster in the early 1980s. Alas, he didn't follow up, but it was grand while it lasted. He was in Menifee, California, near some of our members. https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/benny-mardones-into-the-night-singer-songwriter-dead-at-73/ar-BB166H5s?li=BBnbfcL&ocid=spartan-ntp-feeds

Alfred Wegener was right !

I am watching an adult education course "Introduction to Geology" each morning while doing my cardio exercise machine. This person was an exceptional scientist. The physical suffering these men endured on their polar expeditions must be unimaginable to modern, urban persons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Wegener

Pearl Harbor Attack book
by WaianaeCrider- 3 replies

I'm 77 and I remember reading a book when I was a teenager about the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was written from the Japanese perspective. Probably by a Japanese author. It was so well written that by the end you were "almost" rooting for the Japanese. I've googled and googled but can't find any books about the attack written by a Japanese author. Am I crazy? Did I really read that book?

Rocks of wonder, way out younder Part #3: Fossilized "Styrofoam" and distant views.
by Silas_Sancona- 15 replies

Aside from the plants, the views among countless boulders offer plenty to photograph.. this is from the most easily accessible outcrop. I'd hoped to be able to drive out to the more distant and larger outcrop group but discovered the "road" that leads out there is barely wide enough for off road vehicles. Being this was my first visit, didn't want to stray too far until i got a feeling for the terrain also. Hope to hike out to the other groups next time i visit. Regardless, the overall area reminds me of a similar spot near where i grew up back in San Jose. Visions of the famous Vasquez Rocks near Santa Clarita, or visits to Pinnacles Nat. Monument also come to mind wh…

I have mentioned in other post about going thru and scanning some old family photos, slides and negatives... I have, while researching some of the people and places, found a great source for an old magazine... "The Desert Magazine" of the South West... There are free download PDFs of 534 issues from 1937-1985... You can also get everything on dvd for $10... These are fantastic old reads... After Nathan's great posts on the desert, I thought I would put these out there... http://www.swdeserts.com/archive master 37 85.htm Butch I have no attachment to the sales of these dvds

Vietnam March/April

Just booked flights to Vietnam. Planning to go to the area west of Kon Tum again. Will have a car with driver to head from Nha Trang to Da Nang or the other way. There will be space for 1 or 2 others. This is a truly spectacular area and the area of many new palm discoveries. Will see Pinanga annamesis.declinata and kontumensis . Licuala bracteata, glaberrima, parvula and honbaensis. Also Lanonia gialaiensis, hexasepala centralis and hopefully manglaensis. Not desperate for a full car but thought I would see if a like minded palmer was keen. This will be my 3rd trip to this area and so I know exactly some localities. This…

Now that I have filled every hole in the yard, I am thinking about redoing my walkways. Part of the yard is gravel and black volcanic sand. I prefer to DIY but if it’s too hard, I could hire someone. Thoughts or suggestions? I have been thinking about pavers, stamped concrete, flagstone etc Now pics of the walkway in question taken today

Annihilating Spider plant in the garden
by DoomsDave- 2 replies

Some spider plant (Chlorophytum composing) has established itself in my garden and I wan to get rid of it. Anyone have experience in this regard? Glyphosate (Roundup kleenup) doesn’t seem to hurt it. It has tubers that run all over and I want if I can to avoid having to dig them all up. Thoughts, anyone?
