R I P General Charles "Chuck" Yeager, 97

'America's greatest Pilot' Chuck Yeager, first person to break sound barrier, dies at 97 (msn.com) My dad kind of idolized Mr. Yeager, and it's easy to see why. He outlived dad on both ends, and did a lot. In particular, he kept on flying, long into "old age" that wasn't that old for him, at least for a while. R I P. Chuck Yeager, the first person to break the sound barrier and one of the U.S. Air Force's most decorated test pilots, died Monday. He was 97. Yeager's death was announced on his official Twitter account in a tweet attributed to his wife Victoria Scott D'Angelo. "It is w/ profound sorrow, I must tell you that my life love General Chuck Yeager …

Show Us Your Garden Ornaments./ Improvements

What have you done to improve the aspect of your garden ? The Good, the Bad, the Ugly.... What has worked, what hasn't ? Pathways, ponds, pergolas, waterfalls, creeks, statues, critters, chooks, ducks, turkeys, geese... ? What have you done to get the 'look' for your patch of green ? I'll kick it off with a use of old car tyres to create a jungle snake in my front yard. Bit of a mission and a labour of love using some old paint I had out in the shed. Cutting rubber tyres ain't a lot of fun either just quietly ! Next plan is a motion activated speaker with a recording of a Rattlesnake rattle and a loud hiss or 2.... will really put the wind up pedestrians walking…

This wily guy has been giving my front lawn grief since we moved in and I haven't been home to get him. I tried gopher bait (please don't judge me) which I think just irritated him so he tore up the lawn more. I got back from AZ last night filled in all his holes from this weeks destruction and took a look this AM to see where he was digging. I didn't see any activity when I first walked the yard this AM but when I was pouring my second cup he poked his head up...mocking me...mistake Good thing I had "Ol ' blue" my carbine action 200 shot range model air rifle with working compass in the stock and this thing that tells time. It's a good morning.

Today, at 90, in Nassau, Bahamas. Yeah, he was Bond, James Bond, but so much more. He was even an Arab diplomat in "The Next Man" in 1976. (I saw it.) Alas, 'tis over, but twas' a great grand run, indeed.

The Dirt, ..on Dirt..

While doing some random research regarding differences in soil composition/ PH values here compared to other areas of the region, California, Texas, and Florida, came across what looks like an extremely detailed app offered by California Soil Resources Lab developed by UC Davis. The site offers up what looks like all sorts of valuable info regarding everything from exploring soil surveys, 3D displays of mapped areas, to exploring the spatial extent of soil types, and, perhaphs most important when it comes to the garden, Soil Properties, inc. everything from PH analysis to calcium content, etc, etc.. LOTS to explore regardless.. and, while developed by UC Davis, the…

My brother has a 26" bike wheel and he's in Ohio. I'd like to have it shipped out here to California. What, in your experience, or sage suggestion, would be a good way to do that? Thanks for any suggestions or thoughts.

Koala
by sandgroper- 6 replies

I earned a few browny points with my beautiful daughter this morning, I took her up to the Perth hills so she could play with a koala. She loves koalas, my wife does too, they are quite nice little things. This little bloke is 10 years old, his name is William and he comes when his name is called. My daughter wants to be a volunteer at the wildlife park on weekends, I think it would be difficult keeping her away from William and his mates though!

Saw this and thought i'd share.. Have seen other videos of such behavior, but thought it was interesting that the Zoo keepers had to separate the animals based on how they were encouraging the same behavior between each other. Many people often think of Birds as fairly mindless but most exhibit a pretty amazing level of intelligence. Just have to be smart enough to comprehend how they think ( and how to out wit them at times ). I'd bet people were giving other people the side eye before realizing it were the birds screeching colorful words from their perches, not they guy behind you. Dirty Birdies, lol https://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/lifestyle-buzz/zoo-re…

Not sure if anyone had seen this but wanted to pass along news of the opening of a new Botanical Garden in Houston.. Nice to see something positive come of abandoned space. Hopefully this is becomes a trend for Golf Courses that are failing and/or no longer profitable. More Green space, accessible to everyone, benefits everyone. Will have to add a visit here to the "future trips" list. Story here: https://inhabitat.com/from-golf-to-gardens-houstons-new-botanical-garden-opens/

A Hot Time on the Left Coast

Unless you're in a cave, you know that we're having a record wild-fire year in Washington, Oregon and California, as well as other states nearby. I'm downwind of the El Dorado ("Gender Reveal") Fire, about 50 miles away from me in Yucaipa in the El Dorado National Forest. I've been getting a dusting of ash for about 10 days now; the sky was so overcast with smoke it reduced the temperatures a bit, and made it easier to work in the yard because there's no worry about baking in the hot sun. Some of you are in the slipstream of the Bobcat Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains (the Dark Tower for me). Anyone else having a hot time, or, a cool time because of all th…

Experimenting with YouTube
by rprimbs- 4 replies

My six year old son spends too much time watching YouTube. He has become obsessed with starting his own YouTube channel, so I finally gave in and tried "Camtasia" to edit the video. Our first video is not of very good quality, but it was fun to make, and it got my son off of YouTube for a little bit! I'm sure not going to quit my job, but If we keep making videos I figure we will get a bit better with our production quality, and I will be able to add some videos of our progressing garden on this forum. I am in the process of grading a large part of my property so I haven't really been going much gardening, but we can make videos of the progress. Camtasia seems to…

Just a short note to let you know I'm still alive. I'm in a wheelchair most of the time. I can't walk too far without something to hold on to as my equilibrium has forsaken me. Some days are better than others but I manage to do quite a bit. I doubt ill be doing much more editing on the encyclopedia of palms. I have a part-time CNA, she's helping me type. I do okay at this function typing that is with her help, but her help is a blessing. It's nice to have a hand. I'll try and send another email if there are any changes in my health. …

Creek Fire - Fresno/Madera Counties
by Josue Diaz- 16 replies

Utterly devastated by the Creek Fire that is burning through the forests I call home, where I learned to love the mountains. I know they will regrow, and our forests have evolved to withstand fire, but it's still sad to have ash from these fires floating down over Fresno for 3 days now as the forest burns and know they will look so different once this is over. The blaze erupted Friday night, and we learned of it Saturday morning as we were heading up the Sierra to kayak an alpine lake. The Sierra National Forest/Kaiser Wilderness/San Joaquin River Gorge/Yosemite NP... I climb, hike & camp in these areas all the time, it's sad to think not everyone is as careful with f…

I found these maps online, they show where Australia and New Zealand would lie if they were situated in their current latitude except in the northern hemisphere. I was surprised at how much closer to the equator some of our cities and major towns were in comparison.

New MS Flag
by ahosey01- 4 replies

I am not trying to make this political, so I would like to keep this conversation strictly about aesthetics. I don't want to hear about whether you are happy or upset with the fact that they are getting a new flag. However, since the state of reality is such that Mississippi is choosing a new flag, I think two of these new designs are really cool: A.) B.) C.) D.) E.) I really like A and D - especially D. That would be one of the most aesthetic flags in the US if they chose it. How about you guys?!
