Working out / Bodybuilding thread
by UK_Palms- 0 replies

So there is probably quite a few of us on here who have been working out over the years, either in the gym, or at home. Others may get their exercise from the gardening, or have plans/aspirations to get in shape and lose some weight, perhaps so they can stay on top of the gardening properly. Either way I thought I would make a thread for this so people can share their experiences or journey's. I started working out in the gym at 17 and competed in powerlifting contests during my early twenties. At one point I could deadlift 600 pounds and bench press over 400 pounds for reps. I had a few injuries over the years and backed away from the gym a bit around 27. Then follo…

An interesting look at the enduring fantasy of Tiki Culture

An interesting article discussing how Western idealism and escape-ism influenced one of the biggest fads of the 20th century, one that, to some deg. still lives on in the 202K's.. https://getpocket.com/fr/explore/item/tiki-hangover-unearthing-the-false-idols-of-america-s-south-seas-fantasy Original article appeared in Collectors Weekly, back in 2014.

Crocodile range in Florida 1 2

I recently read the crocodile living in Sanibel survived Hurricane Ian and is still on the island. That made me wonder, does anyone know of them living year-round north of there? I understand one lived in Lake Tarpon for a few years before it was removed, but I’m not aware of any others north of Sanibel. Also, how far north do they go on the east coast?

MLB 2024 Thread
by JohnAndSancho- 7 replies

See through pants? At least that happened long after Cecil Fielder, John Kruk, and David Wells retired. Jerseys that look like I stitched them? It looks like MLB bought them off Temu. Scott Boras clients still unsigned? Reinsdorf asking the City of Chicago to give him one billion with a b dollars to build a new stadium when he can't fill his current stadium half way? Shohei's stupid contract deferral that shouldn't be allowed? Red Sox players basically calling their ownership cheap on TV? Actually I kind of like that one. The horrible treatment of Oakland A's fans and them potentially losing thei…

We get a fair amount of wildlife in the garden here, including Wallabies And Kangaroos, plus many other native animals, birds and reptiles. This little Wallaby was happily munching on the Singapore Daisy this afternoon. Even though wet from the rain, his fur is much darker than that of the usual wallabies we get around here. Daryl

Astronomy

Anyone into astronomy at all? I just bought my family an Orion 4.5" Starblast for Christmas. It came with a 25 and 10mm Plossl eyepiece; I've been observing the moon, a couple constellations. Lastnight I looked up Jupiter and could faintly see horizontal bands of color, when the atmospheric wobble settled a bit, and 4 very bright moons there with it. It was quite difficult to get it sharp enough that the planet didn't simply look like a star. I can also vaguely see some galaxy dust near Orion's belt, I can't remember the cluster number. I use the app "Stellarium" to pick out some targets. I'm planning to get a smaller eyepiece to increase magnification but wi…

Slowly rebuilding my greenhouse

After my greenhouse got smashed by a falling very large limb of a old growth gumtree the little rebuild is coming along slowly in between work and life with a little progress it will be covered in 70 percent shade cloth for the roof and with horticultural plastic on the sides to keep out the cold wind for the cool tender tropical varieties the last couple of photos are what it used to look like before it got smashed luckily there was no plants in there at the time it was reserved for my joey palms

Each evening after work (when it's not raining) I try to get some exercise, so I go for a walk. I walk along the intercoastal waterway (in south Florida) for first half of the walk and along the ocean for the last half. The views are tough to take. Anyway, all of a sudden I started noticing these incredible sunsets so I started taking pictures with my cell phone. Here are a few...

Odds calculation ?
by Darold Petty- 1 follower

OK, math pros, I admit it was a very long time ago that I had any math classes ! I bought a Chambeyronia palm two times from two different vendors, a macrocarpa and a hookeri. They were both only green. Phil B. told me that just one in twenty Chambeyronia palms will be only green, so what was the odds of this double failure, 5% x 5% is what percent or probability for my misfortune ?? ( I tried a Google search, but the results only showed how to calculate "odds to probability for sports betting" ) Thanks !

Garden Pond
by BeyondTheGarden- 22 replies

I'm in the process of building my new garden, which requires some kind of pond. My old garden had a small waterfall and a little stream that trickled into a hard-black-plastic pond liner; this was integrated into elevation change which is necessary for making it feel somewhat natural and real and wild. I had about 3.5 feet of elevation gain that I had built-in. I liked it but decided I would have a bigger mound this time, extending above head so you could stand at the bottom and not see the top. My new mound is about 6.5' tall and over 20 feet wide at the base. I currently have a hole dug to probably 2' deep; maybe 10 feet wide and 15 feet long. I may make it …

Pets With Benefits

I was inspired by this thread to make this post. Today I cleaned out my main chicken coop. I've mention before that I compost my paper waste using chicken manure for a nitrogen source. First I arranged some cinder blocks into a square. I then empty a bag or two of shredded paper, old napkins, tissues, torn paper, etc into my wheelbarrow and add some chicken/coop waste and mix; dump in into the square. Repeat until the coop is cleaned, then add water. Tomorrow I'll add some oak leaves and kitchen scraps, then mix. As the temperatures warm, the soldier flies will become active and I'll add more cardboard to the pile. The soldierfly larva will…

Hello!
by tarnado- 0 replies

Hello everyone! I'm new hear so I just wanted to drop a line and say that I am very hopeful and happy to be part of this community. I'm fairly mad about plants in general, but we moved to an island in the Puget Sound (Washington State). My spouse turns to me, *out of the blue,* and says: "You know, now that we live on an island, I think we could get some palms and things like you wanted [when we lived on the mainland]" I am NOT going to let this chance pass me by So now I'm ready to go completely bananas (so to speak) with some colder-hardy palms and the wild world of hybrids!

Wonder what pets everyone has. My choice might not be everyone's cup of tea, certainly my wife dislikes him immensely but I love my south west Australian carpet python.
