Beach Erosion
by Norm- 14 replies

I know that this topic has been discussed before and many ideas and opinions exist on the subject. However, the magnitude of the erosion has just hit home with me (and others) here in Kailua Bay. Newspaper articles and TV spots discuss the matter from time to time. But no one has tackled the topic of the future configuration of beaches like this. I wonder what everyone thinks about this. Here is Kailua Bay in 1997:

Woody Guthrie

Woody Guthrie wrote the following Apprreciation regarding Stetson Kennedy's book"Palmetto Country"about Florida and copyrighted in 1942. "I don't know of a book on my whole shelf,Stet, that hits me any harder than your Palmetto Country.I have read it and I am still reading it and can now say with safety and surity that it gives me a better trip and taste and look and feel for Florida than I got in the 47 states I've actually been in body and tramped in boot.If only, and if only, all our library books could say what you did-the jokes and songs and old ballads about the voodoo and the hoodoo and the bigly winds down in your neck of the woodvine. I would like for you to s…

Ultra-marathon #3
by bgl- 17 replies

As I mentioned in the Big Island thread a few days ago, it was time for the annual Hilo to Volcano 50K (31.1 mile) Ultra-Marathon, yesterday, Saturday Jan. 26th. An Ultra-Marathon, by definition, is anything longer than a "standard" 26.2 mile (42,195 metre) Marathon, but in order to receive some respect the distance really needs to be at least 50K/31.1 miles. But Hilo to Volcano is not your average run-of-the-mill 50K - it goes from sealevel in Hilo to an elevation of about 4,000 ft in the village of Volcano. At least 3,500 ft of that climb is between the 7 and 26 mile markers with many long hills. The race began in the parking lot of Moku Ola (also known as Coconut Is…

Magician called on the Grapetronic with the following information pertinent to only those with interest in College football.Currently, the BCS includes four Bowls and the BCS Championship, played several days thereafter between the top two teams as nominated in early December at a rotating BCS site. The current BCS bowls are Rose,Orange,Sugar and Fiesta. Those who follow college football may recall the Cotton Bowl, which enjoyed great prominence for many years until it stubbornly refused to move from it's antiquated facility.Magician says that Cotton Bowl officials recognized their wicked ways and have now become incredibly flexible. The new format, very close to adoption …

They need to run that ox-like Turner at them for the first half, til their tongues are hangin, then put the gazelle-like LT in for the kill. Rivers has to throw with surprising accuracy like he did last weekend(and keep his mouth shut) Drayton Florence needs to behave himself, and act like a professional football player. I watched the re-run of the '07 championship loss to NE last night on the NFL channel. We dominated them, and still lost. Chargers 27 NE 24

Hey all, I now have Skype. Calls are free from Skype to Skype. So I was wondering, does anyone here ever call each other to discuss palms? Virtual meetings? This is such cool technology Is it wise to give out your Skype #? Or have people had problems with unsolicited calls from unwanted third parties?

A quick stop at the stree fair
by amazondk- 13 replies

On the way back home from work out and around town I stopped briefly at a Friday street fair close to my house. These kind of transient markets are common around Brazil. Here in Amazonas they have a lot of palm fruit, pupunha (bactris gasipaes) this time of year, fish, meat, free range chickens (galinha caipira), fruits and vegetables, and an area to eat. One of the big items was of course boiled peach palm fruit, pupunha. The Parque Dez Friday street market. I bought a bunch of peach palm fruits to take home. Some are oilier than others. I like them with a lot of oil. The guy claimed that these were like that. But, I will not know until we boil them up t…

Champagne, Chana masala, guitars...

My birthday was Saturday, so naturally on Friday I went to the tattoo parlor and spent 2 1/2 hours there. On Saturday afternoon, my husband told me to get ready to go out to dinner, and at about 5pm, a limosine pulled up in front of my house. About 10 minutes later 3 cars full of my friends pulled up. My husband went to the closet and pulled out a cooler filled with beer, wine and champagne and a picnic basket with a cake, wine glasses etc, and a bag filled with some of my fave CD's and DVD's and said, "Let's go!" We all jumped in the limo and started out. CHampagne corks started popping and the party commenced! After the initial toast we cranked the stereo and con…

This is not a political or societal post! I have tried all of the convential news sites, CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc. I am just tired of reading about wives and husbands killing their children, the earth ending, etc. so I went on a search for a better default home page for my browser so I don't start every day with depressing news. Here is what I have found. I have made no judgements as to whether it is liberal, conservative, republican or democrat, nor do I care to, and this thread should not attempt it, so don't. All I can say about this site is I like it better than any alternative that I have found. http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/

Some questions were raised in the "Grouping ideas" thread in "Discussing Palm Trees" earlier today, so we took a ride thru our neighborhood a little while ago in order to get some photos. First, some general information. The Big Island of Hawaii consists of nine districts (clockwise, beginning in the south): Ka'u, South Kona, North Kona, South Kohala, North Kohala, Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo and Puna. Puna is about the size of Oahu and stretches from ocean on the SE side of the island up to the village of Volcano at 4,000 ft elevation. About 30,000 people live in Puna, and it's the fastest growing district on the island. Leilani Estates is one of several subdivisio…

Favorite Tee Shirts

Its raining, cloudy, grey and boring here. I am about to put my nose to the grindstone and work on my vampire novel some, but before I go, I thought maybe I'd like to see some of your fave T shirts. You know, the shirts in your collection that really show your personality. These are mine. I have to admit, I broke my "all black" rule to buy this shirt. But it didn't come in black (sigh...) so I had to just suck it up and get it anyway. I wore it at the gym this week and everyone got a huge kick out of it... Curious George...Passed out on Ether

LA HABRA SHOOTING THREAD DELETED
by PALM MOD- 14 replies
- 1.1k views
When the La Habra shooting thread started to wander into the area of gun control, I warned that such a discussion was really off topic, but more importantly political in nature, and not permitted. Since the only guns involved in this story were those carried by the police, I politely asked that you stick to comments pertaining to the shooting of Mr. Cho by the police, and refrain from your opinions about the merits (or lack thereof) of gun control. Since both the established guidelines and my specific warning continued to be ignored by a few, the thread was deleted. I have made note of those who made such action necessary.
