New Ink

I got a new piece yesterday, actually half of a new piece, due to time constraints I couldn't sit for the whole shmeel and didn;t want to sfeer with an outline on half of it so I have to go back for act two in a couple weeks. This is a winged scarab design I have been fiddling with for about 3-4 months. It is the dorsal half of a lower bicep/tricep wrap, just above the elbow. The inner aspect, which will be the most painful part, is a kind of openwork art noveau interpretation of the Sacred Lotus. I finally got it just the way I wanted it and took it up to my guy that I work with and we inked the scarab yesterday. In Egyptian mythology, the scarab is sacred and clos…

Avid gardener = good cook

Many avid gardeners are also good cooks. I suppose it takes passion to be good at either. How able are you in the kitchen and what's your favorite dish? I am partial to Jambalaya. Mine is pretty mean too.

on my 8 yr old's Spring Break . Well , we went to Royal Gorge yesterday and after that touristy trap we went back in to to Canyon City, CO. to get a bite to eat . On the way there, I saw this sign that days "Skyline Drive" I take the turn off , knowing that I read somewhere that it is a "Breathtaking" view of the valley in which Canyon City is situated. Little did I know the terror that awaited myself, Sis in Law, my wife and Wiley. I turn up the road and head up on to the ridge that is "Skyline Drive" My Sis in Law Suzi recorded part of the trip with her digital camera - it is a low quality video, but it gives an idea of the terror that presented …

Coming from 9 points back with 2 minutes left to play, taking the game to overtime and then stepping on the throat of the Memphis Tigers. You may also be interetsed to learn that Palms - Journal of the International Palm Society is printed in Lawrence Kansas - home of the National Champions in Basketball - the University of Kansas Jayhawks. If you can make it to Lawrence Kansas on Sunday April 13, 2008 the parade begins at 3:00 PM

Well, we've made it to Orlando an hving a great time, but we had intended to do he dolphin encounter at Discovery Cove and found that they are fully booked fo this week. I remember when I previously asked about things to do in Florida, a few people mentioned that it was possible to swim with dolphins at a few places in the Keys. We are heading down to Miami this Saturday fo a week, so I wondered if anyone could provide some details of places that we could swim with dolphins in the keys or elsewhere in South Florida. Any info woul be much appreciated. Also I'm still up for meeting any members in Florida, if anyone has any time available. Our schedule is fairly packe…

that lands in my small hometown ,Lake Jackson ,Texas. I was 15 when this happened. A friend and I sneaked through some woods to the end of the runway on this day and watched it with binoculars for a few hours.... from thefacts.com Hijackers steer 727 to county airport By Marie Beth Jones The Facts Published March 3, 2008 On July 12, 1972, more than 20 years before fears of terrorism began gripping American travelers, two air pirates hijacked a plane carrying more than 100 passengers and seven crew members. The first act of this violent episode took place half-a-continent away from Brazoria County as passengers in Virginia boarded a scheduled …

Chuck Taylors or Palms?
by DoomsDave- 2 replies

Palms. I have been noted as a wearer of the infamous Chuck Taylor Converse All-Star, and visitors have noted that I have a lot of pairs. Which is true. But, which is my first love? Palms or Chucks? Palms. I've got many more palms than shoes, in pots and in the ground. Here's a guy, looney even by my standards, with 560 pairs.

Rock sculptures

In the Alcantarea imperialis thread (Tropical plants etc), Daxin asked about our rock structures, so I figured I'll post a few photos of a few of them. It all began right after we moved in here, 11 years ago. We had a few guys from Tonga build rockwalls for us (and these guys are very good at what they do!). When they build a rockwall they typically pile some rocks on top of each other (away from the rockwall they're building). This is out of superstition: they believe that if they do this it won't rain while they're building the rockwall. After the rockwall is complete, they take apart the little rock structure. I liked the idea and decided to adopt it. Not the supers…

Do annuals exist in the tropics?
by jrod- 12 replies

Here is a question that really stumped me. As some of you may know, I'm a horticulture student but I'd like to see if anybody had any answers to my question. We are growing many different types of annuals in one of my greenhouse classes such as petunia, calibrachoa, lantana, verbena, geraniums, Coleus, bacopa, Alyssum. The other day I was in the greenhouse and one of my friends asked me, "If I keep these plants in the greenhouse over the winter, will they still die?" So I told him, "No, they'll live." After I said that, another student said, "Yes, they will die." I didn't really want to argue but from what I understand, annual plants are mostly perennial in the…

Here Jim Gaffigan goes on a skit about "Hot Pockets". For those who are fortunate enough not to have these on your shelves where you live, a Hot Pocket is a pastry of sorts with processed food inside (meat, cheese) that is usually heated up in a microwave. Jim gives the real deal.....pretty funny. http://youtube.com/watch?v=jFFTwnYXI20

A6 Intruder Inflight Partial Ejection
by freakypalmguy- 7 replies

I fly with a lot of military pilots at work and hear quite a few interesting stories. Here is a link too one I heard the other day from an F14 pilot. Surviving Partial Ejection from an A6 Lieutenant Mark Baden's (pilot) Account of the Incident As we finished the brief, my BN (bombardier navigator - Lt. Keith Gallagher) told me that it was his birthday and that our recovery would be his 100th trap on the boat. To top it off, we were assigned the plane with my name on the side. As we taxied out of the chocks, I was still feeling a little uneasy about all the recent mishaps (view log of the Lincoln's activities during this time). To make myself feel better, …
