Anyone Buying Stocks? 1 2
by Kathryn- 53 replies
- 4.4k views
Has anyone been buying or selling stocks? Most of my investments are for long-term, but I have a portion of my money that I play with. I've been much more cautious lately and have made mostly good decisions. I bought some $3 GM stock two weeks ago and planned to keep it long-term, but when it went up over $5 last week, I decided to sell. I think this stock will go up and down over the next few months, but will be a good buy in the long run, so I plan to purchase it again. I didn't expect it to go up that much in one week - a 65% increase. Anyone else playing around? What are you considering?

I just took this photo few hours ago. I have never seen before 3 outboard motors, each 300 horse power on a boat size like this. I did see 2x250, or 2x225. But this, this is crazy. Show your photos if you have any.

Pedro Ruiz Art
by Pedro 65- 3 replies
- 4.4k views
PEDRO RUIZ Pedro Ruiz's work occupies itself with social and political issues that affect his country, Colombia. Nature and the concept that it is a force which we cannot control and must live in harmony with, is ever-present in his works. There are three fundamental series which Ruiz has developed through paintings and installations: Love is in the Air, Displacements and Gold. LOVE IS IN THE AIR is reminiscent of a nostalgic poem bleeding with elements of a love that seems to have drifted away from where it is needed most. Focusing on the politically charged theme of fumigating heroine producing poppies, Pedro Ruiz’ latest body of work imbues his subject with a spir…

Has this ever happened to you?

Say you have a nice fruiting palm, in my case D. baronii, which has set oodles of infructescences (12 for me). Say that you bagged as many clumps of seed as you could so as not to lose any upon ripening. Say that just a couple were out of reach and could not be covered but you ingnored them. Say that these just so happened to ripen while you're at work and hundreds of seed fell...right into the leaves and cups of all the bromeliads planted beneath! The ones with the spines from hell on the leaf edges! And I'm talking filled to the brim!

The roots of European indigenous people
by Ed in Houston- 14 replies

There have been several waves of humans migrating out of Africa where Sapiens originated. The first wave was Homo erectus who colonized the old world about 2 million yeas ago. Fast forward almost 2 million years. By this time in some regions of Africa, some Homo erectus populations had evolved into Homo sapiens and once again there was another large migration out of Africa about 50k years ago, this time by the Sapiens. Of coarse most Sapiens and Erectus remained in Africa. Two million year old Erectus African evolved Sapien by 100k years BP. When these African Sapiens migrated…

Lava Zones 1 & 2
by Kim- 13 replies

The Big Island, paradise for palm growers, is also home to five volcanoes, two of them active. Most of you know the island is mapped into several "lava zones" representing the statistical likelihood of lava flow in those areas. Suddenly, at the nadir of an economic crisis, the national mortgage agencies decided to stop buying loans made on lava zone 1 and 2 properties. Effectively they have shut down mortgage lending on homes in these zones unless a private lender is willing to make funds available for their own loan portfolio. I wonder if any islanders have heard of any progress toward resolution of this issue? This has to have a very negative impact on real estat…

Ride on lawn mowers.....the good, the bad and the ugly.
by Tropicgardener- 32 replies

Hello all, I have just sold my property in Tannum Sands and will soon be on the move to a 2.5 acre property near Airlie Beach along the tropical Whitsunday coast............ The property I have bought is a 5 bedroom. 3 bathroom house, a large 3 bay shed and basically nothing else except for 1 small fig tree and 2 Coconut Palms and lots of grass !!! So I am interested to see what others with large properties have in the way of ride on mowers............. today I had a look at some 'Hustler' models made in the USA with Kawasaki engines. I have been told that they are quite reliable. Others speak favourably of Husqvarna..... Need some ideas for a property with reasonably…

Something that really bothers me 1 2

Thanks to the very generous donations from people on this message board and through the CFPACS, I have managed to create a very nice palm collection on the campus of my school, the University of Florida in Gainesville. When I planted the yard with a team of people from the Grounds Department, the person in charge was very encouraging, saying how he really supported people who go out of their way to bring their passion to the campus. Of course, he was not the first person I had to go through in order to plant these palms. I first had to write a proposal, get it approved by the Landscape Committee and then get permits in order to plant the palms from the school, the city, …

FORUM ACTIVITY 1 2
by gsn- 48 replies

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how quiet (decreased activity) the forum has become over the last month? I know we had the big PALAPA debate. Did people leave because of this,or are they taking a break like me, to see what the forum evolves into?I'll be honest it did leave a rather bad taste in my mouth regarding the site. I PM"D several people durning this debate with what I thought were legitimate questions, and they were received according to the PM logs, without even the courtesy of a response. I wonder if anyone else had this same situation happen? At ant rate I hope the forum comes back better, bigger, and stronger since the controversy. As I had …

Difficult Neighbors - What would you do? 1 2
by junglegalfla- 1 follower

These neighbors were always a bit odd but we remained cordial with them and then things changed. This winter my oldhammi bamboo dropped a little too much leaf litter for their liking. They'd sweep small piles and leave it at the property line for days in order to make a point. They have never said anything to me. They stopped talking to us all together. I can't imagine me doing that to my neighbors on the other side with the large live oak. What, rake the leaves and leave 20 bags sitting there? Now that we're getting rain and the drying winds are gone, this won't be an issue. I got home last night to realize they had crossed the line. They planted 3 shrubs on my proper…

On Set w/ MattyB 1 2

I worked 2 days on a low budget pilot last week so I thought I'd share some pics. The plot basically consists of a guy who inherits 2 million dollars from his grandmother. The only stipulation for getting the money is that he needs to become completely eco-friendly. The conflict is that he's a beer drinkin, monster truck drivin', non recyclin', lazy American man! I play his best friend. It's a lead role for me, and even if the show never gets picked up, it'll be a nice credit for my resume and great footage for my reel. I work 2 more days next week so I'll continue the pix after that. Here's what we shot last week: Sound tech, Hanna and Director of Photography…

Coqui Frog - Friend or Foe? 1 2
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

Some people love them for both their lullaby and the fact that they eat a ton of bugs, others absolutely detest them. Some don't have them yet and are terrified at the thought of them arriving in their gardens. Others go out of their way to sneak them into their garden. Where do you stand? Take the poll. If you've never heard them, here is a nice little recording. In some Hawaii jungle settings, their collective song can reach 65db. Some interesting facts about the coqui: it's rapidly disappearing in its native habitat, The big Island of Hawaii is actually one of the few places where it's thriving. This frog has actually become the center-piece of a new move…

Sun Tans In Tropical Climates
by Neofolis- 34 replies

I mentioned sun tans in another thread, but didn't want to go too off topic, so I started this. There are obviously a few people on this board who live in climates with year round sun, but don't originate from such an environment. I appreciate fully the need to be careful, in terms of sun exposure, as with anything, too much or too little is bad, all things in moderation. I also appreciate that different people have different skin types, some of which don't cope with sun exposure particularly well. That said, for most people, who don't have a very pale complexion, whilst they may burn when exposed to the sun, either for prolonged periods or when their skin hasn't …
