Although, 815 sounds like a lot of scientists, over 82 countries, that is just under 10 per country. 8000 would have been a more impressive number, but this is a start. Without name or party or ideology calling, where do you stand on GMOs? - keith Open Letter from World Scientists to All Governments Concerning Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) The scientists are extremely concerned about the hazards of GMOs to biodiversity, food safety, human and animal health, and demand a moratorium on environmental releases in accordance with the precautionary principle. They are opposed to GM crops that will intensify corporate monopoly, exacerbate inequality and prevent …

Building my new house 1 2 3
by bgl- 89 replies

After buying my two new acres on Pomaikai Street here in Leilani Estates in early December 2010, and then partly clearing them, I have been busy both planting palms there and more recently finally getting around to weed control. And about eight months ago I began designing my new house. When I had the design ready I hired a draftsperson, who created the plans, which were then checked and stamped by an architect. Next step was to find a contractor. That's an important job, and anyone who has ever built a house will know ALL about that. I ended up hiring Kevin Gardner, who built my "old" house 15 years ago. A house that I had also designed. Kevin is an excellent builder a…

Where we live 1 2 3
by bgl- 112 replies

I should begin with a brief explanation. The “we” in “Where we live” refers to all of us here on PalmTalk, not me and my family personally. “Community” is an interesting concept. When I grew up in Malmö, Sweden, the only community I knew was my city, and in particular Kirseberg, the section in the city where my family lived. We lived in an apartment on the second level in a three story building, and we knew all our neighbors. Immediately below our apartment was the grocery store, so needless to say they knew me and I knew them. I also knew the people at the post office, about half a mile away, because of all the international (aviation related) mail that I received whe…

Tips for New Floridians? 1 2 3

Howdyall: I have a younger brother, aged 46, who's a copier repair tech by trade, who lost his job in Ohio, and, having seen a lot of Craigslist offerings in JAX plans to go there in about a week, and cohabit with a friend to share expenses. He's collecting unemployment, and will for a number of more months yet. I recall a few things about Florida, but they're old. One of them is that they're super-insistent that you register your car there, and, they register cars by weight, which can get expensive for a Buick Road Master Wagon. I know that Jax has some tough 'hoods in it, but that it's also full of the kind of industrial activity that could make for good pros…

A tree for the front yard
by Dave-Vero- 26 replies

I have nothing against laurel oaks if they're a safe distance from buildings, cars, whatever. The almost-evergreen oaks (different subgenus from live oaks; they're reds, lives are whites) grow fast, get huge, and drop all sorts of debris before dying young. My front-yard tree is only 6' from the house, just 4' from the eaves. The front yard is pretty much dominated by a pair of huge laurels just across the property line in my neighbor's yard. If my laurel goes, there won't be enough space for a live oak to spread out. Live oaks grow horizontally, with low canopies. They're savannah trees, while Laurels are tall forest trees. Some questions were raised in the "Grouping ideas" thread in "Discussing Palm Trees" earlier today, so we took a ride thru our neighborhood a little while ago in order to get some photos. First, some general information. The Big Island of Hawaii consists of nine districts (clockwise, beginning in the south): Ka'u, South Kona, North Kona, South Kohala, North Kohala, Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo and Puna. Puna is about the size of Oahu and stretches from ocean on the SE side of the island up to the village of Volcano at 4,000 ft elevation. About 30,000 people live in Puna, and it's the fastest growing district on the island. Leilani Estates is one of several subdivisio…

the plastic pond liner i used to make my koi pond was losing the battle with invasive palm roots,so i talked my pops into building a more permanent structure in its place.put on yer work boots & safety-googles & join us! 1st some "before" pix... recliner by target. the water level is 2' down due to roots which have punctured the liner. it was kinda "jerry-rigged" & i knew someday i'd have to upgrade. So, do you have coyotes? 1 2

Howdyall: Matt's post including Frog in the fog, one the mend from c-dawg attack made me wonder where they are now. Here in the U.S., they're all over. When I was a kid, the idea of coyotes in Euclid would have provoked a snort of derision. Now, you can hear them, especially in the wooded areas. Here in Cali, as Matt mentioned, they're kings and queens of the canyons, the top predator, except may for the mountain lion or bobcat. So, how about the rest of you? Do you have coyotes too?

Will Paul drink too much sake and drop his camera into the bird bath? Will Terry bring his world famous BBQ ribs! Will we have a special recorded appearance by Wal? Will Dave be wearing his red converse or blue? Will Ron get eaten by a mountain lion while traversing Dictionary Hill on his way home? Will we exceed the weight limit that my house's stilts can handle and we'll all go sliding down the hill? The only way to find out the answers to these important questions is to come to the BBQ at Matt & Jen's. You're all invited. We always enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new ones. RSVP by sending me a PM or give me a call, so I know how many burgers…

Fuego Erupts in Guatemala 1 2

Yesterday ,Sunday morning June 3 ,I thought was going to be a normal day. I live on the lower slopes of Fuego Volcano. This volcano has almost constant fumerolas and some lava seeping out from its crater. During the rainy season we often hear explosions from water falling into the crater and hitting the lava and super heated rock. As the day progressed more and more ash was being produced , but blowing to the north away from my house. About 3pm things took a nasty turn. My house shook and a black shadow covered the sky,the lights went out and I could feel a hot organic smell. Ash started to fall with some small lava bits. This lasted for about 15 mins. Soon I could h…

How does Eastern Green Mamba snake
by bubba- 33 replies

A cable company worker was biten by a poisonous Eastern Green Mamba snake in Hollywood, Florida during routine cable installation Aug. 20, 2009. Fortunately, he is making a full recovery after he was partially paralyzed. I know we are bombarded by Pythons and Boas in Florida, which were imported pets. The Green Mamba is from South Africa and highly poisonous. Who and how would anyone get this snake into the US.?

I just had the pleasure of meeting up with the one and only Harley "Pugar" (sound like boogar with a P ) Gheen Jr. owner of www.customgheenoe.com and able to check out his vessels and tour his manufacturing facility. These guys turn out one heckuva fine little craft. Customizable with about any option you can fit on a featherlight. I thought I would turn anyone interested on to these fine little craft. Most of em' only need 3 inches of water to float, and 5" fully loaded!! (Yes, I am a bit zealous today... Anyone notice who won the raffle on his webpage?! WOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!) Here's a pic of Pugar with the first Low Tide 25 ever built! Tight lines buddy!

Chickens for the yard 1 2

Cutler Bay just passed a law allowing each household to own up to 4 chickens for their yard. Chickens are great fertilizer spreaders, they eat all of the bugs in the yard, and give eggs to their owners Roosters may not be the best way to make friends with your neighbor, but a basket of eggs usually does the trick!
