Who's resisted going on Facebook and why? 1 2 3

BS man's comment in response to another post, somewhat articulated my concerns about not participating in Facebook. I fear yet another time-wasting engine, to add to the others. . . . . While I am a member now, Ive not participated at all. The way the site changes all the time, and the battles over privacy settings make me nervous. Thoughts, anyone?

We have a shed - and it's legal!
by PalmatierMeg- 13 replies

Only in Cape Coral.... Big Box stores legally can sell plastic storage sheds but city code forbids residents from putting one on their property because none can pass hurricane code. If people do Code Enforcement officers may fine them and order them to get rid of the illegal shed. Still, that doesn't stop people from plopping said sheds on their lots. So, why didn't we? Well, we have an anonymous neighbor who turned us in to Code Enforcement for running a commercial nursery (we don't) because we have so many plants, having too many pots & trays, etc. But the Cape recently passed an ordinance that allows a shed up to 160sf if it can pass Miami-Dade hurricane code. …

Aha, Jim lad!! - I read today of the latest attempt under way to discover the lost treasure of Cocos Island. You can read more on the link below. Has anyone here ever visited Cocos Island? I think a story like this would bring out the "metal detector" in any of us! http://www.dailymail...ure-island.html

Just giving a new opportunity to talk about whats on your mind, whether it be BUY BUY BUY or SELL SELL SELL, or something more exciting. I'm currently picking on some extremely over sold CEF (closed end funds). There are positives and negatives regarding this game. The positive is they have low volume so they get very oversold at times when people want to get out. The negative is they are low volume so it's hard to get out when you want to and sometimes hard to get in.

Backyard Birdies 1 2 3
by putu enjula- 87 replies

Of course the first thing that struck me about the Big Island was the scenery... the second was the sounds... which, when you practically live in the forest, come from the birds. The bird situation here is very interesting... there's different types of bird populations.... there are: native birds (what's left of them), the birds that were officially released, and the escaped pet birds. The only bird in Hawai'i that also lives in SoCal is the House Sparrow so I wasn't familiar with any of the birds here except two (the other being the screech/barn owl). So I bought a book about birds of Hawai'i and put up some bird feeders! What do you think? Are the bird…

WHOLE HOUSE FANS 1 2
by DoomsDave- 45 replies
- 5.7k views
Howdyall, I'm considering installing a whole house fan that mounts in the ceiling and sucks hot (or cold) air out into the attic, and out the vents. I'm looking for something large, with enough suck to clear out a 2400 square foot house, with about 6,000 cubic feet per minute capacity. This will require making a hole in my ceiling to install it, plus possibly also adding extra vents to ensure that there's enough vent space for the air to go. Anyone have any thoughts, experiences, cautionary tales? What, for example, is the difference from the practical standpoint of a direct drive or belt drive fan? How hard are they to repair, and what is most likely to g…

Aloha Airlines 1 2

Sad news for Hawaii and Aloha Airlines and its employees and customers. They filed for Chapter 11 bankrupcty just over a week ago, two years after getting out of Chapter 11, but continued to operate. However, today they announced that all passenger operations will be shut down as of tomorrow evening, Monday March 31st. All inter-island flights will operate tomorrow, Monday, and all flights from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii will also operate, but apparently the Hawaii-Mainland flights have been cancelled. Governor Lingle has just made an announcement that she's going to try to have them operate beyond Monday by coming up with some temporary financing. My guess is that all …

Florida people, which fence is best; cypress, pine or vinyl?
by Eric in Orlando- 5 replies
- 5.4k views
We are getting ready to replace a nearly 20 year old wood fence in the back. Trying to decide what would be best, cypress, pressure treated pine or vinyl. Beyond the fence is a green space with a swale for drainage. During deluges the swale overflows and the water flows into our yard. It sometimes erodes areas under the fence. But water never stands, it drains right away. Even after tropical storms and hurricanes. Does anyone have any experiences of what would be better for Florida conditions? Does vinyl actually hold up? Seems like it is a pain to keep clean (mildew/algae) especially using bleach/chemicals as all of my fence has rare plants and palms in front. Also …

Rocky the Swift 1 2
by John in Andalucia- 2 followers

So now I'm the carer of a grounded Swift (not a raptor as I previously thought). I also learned that because of their wing span and short legs, they can't actually get airborne once on the ground. Rocky here, is about two weeks old, and came into my care 2 days ago, on the 30th July. He's not big enough to fly yet, weighing in yesterday at 28 grams. Being an insectivore, I was worried about how I could possibly feed him enough. Some websites swear you should never feed a Swift anything other than a gourmet-mix of flies and crickets. I will add these when I can catch them, but I found some food mix at a local pet shop which says it is for insectivores, even though it i…

Your Favorite Songs 1 2
by osideterry- 71 replies

My brother and I are pulling together the tunes for our 30th(!) high school reunion in July. I'll likely run the songs from my laptop or iPod. Besides the obvious going with songs that topped the charts, I was curious what you all liked from that era. 1975-78 contained a treasure trove of chart-topping crap. "Billy Don't Be a Hero", "The Night Chicago Died" and "Afternoon Delight" all hit #1. I want to mix in some FM rock (Pink Floyd, Led Zep) to balance out songs like "You Light Up My Life". Looking forward to your input. Feel free to make a list if you have time.

Big Fish

Italian fisherman Dino Ferrari hooked a 280-pound, 8-foot-9-inch catfish last Thursday on Italy's Po River, which is believed to be one of the largest ever caught with a rod and reel. Ferrari, a bus mechanic who was fishing with his twin brother, spent 40 minutes reeling in the fish, according to this CNN interview. After Ferrari outlasted the monstrosity, he took a few photos and released it back into the river. The photos were so alarming that the authenticity of the catch was called into question. But this video should quiet even the harshest skeptics.

Thanks to everyone 1 2

Many people have called and left messages on my cell phone regarding the fire and my well being. I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. My family is now safe at my sisters house in Oceanside but I won't know for several days what the final damage will be. At 3AM my neighbors winery blew up and within 5 minutes the whole mountain was on fire. The fire raced down so fast I barely got my family out. I went back for my mom who was in my guest house and by the time we made it to the street the flames surrounded the property. I drove down my hill right through the fire crossing the road, several cars did not make it because the tires popped from the heat. As Bi…

Although, 815 sounds like a lot of scientists, over 82 countries, that is just under 10 per country. 8000 would have been a more impressive number, but this is a start.
