I'm a graphic designer by day, but I started out in fine art. Every couple years I subject myself to various art classes just to remind myself I "still got it". Kind of like a pick-up basketball game only without the trip to the ER and the ankle x-ray. Here goes. It all starts with drawing, and here's an onion rendered in charcoal pencil.

Glamorous new vacation property 1 2
by STEVE IN SO CAL- 40 replies

...OK, so it's a trailer. But it's right smack-dab in the middle of the best fishing, bird hunting, ohv riding and skiing in California. After LA stole the water out of the Owens river in 1920, they were just ordered to rewater 62 miles of river between Big Pine and Owens Lake. This property lies right in the middle of the newly rewatered valley. Kudos to the environmentalists on this one (don't tell Paul I said that... )

The Florida Cowboy/cica 1870
by bubba- 3 replies

"A correspondent of the Sandersville Georgia-Herald,reported some years later that these Florida cowboys were generally well mounted on nimble ponies with large water proof saddlebags filled with rations for themselves and feed for their horses, and all with the indispensable double-barrel shotgun or repeating rifles, and ammunition strapped across their shoulders. They are a sui generis class and recognized as soon as seen. The party often takes a wagon with supplies of corn, oats, the inevitable hominy or grits, coffee, flour and salt for the game they kill.By their nomadic life, they are fine riders and show themselves men of strong will and solid sense. They are pleasant and a…

Saving the environment, or not...

This is a story out from California... http://www.cnn.com/2008....ex.html I was always under the assumption that if you can grow some shade trees that can keep the air around your house cooler, at the same time the inside of you house cooler, then you would not use as much energy on your A/C. It would be interesting to know if the amount of extra energy the solar panels are going to produce will offset the amount of extra energy consumed by the A/C now that the tress are not there to protect the house from the sun. For those growing palms in California, now you are aware of this law...be nice to your neighbors!! Do we have anything similar in Florida? Je…

Some of you may not recognise this, not having been here and all..... But we got some sudden "weather" here to day that no forecaster thought would come. (actually, now as I'm typing this, I remember many folks had said rain on Thurs as of last weekend, but all had revised to say it wasn't gonna happen. Here is a view off the roof of my second floor to the coast...

Massive Power Outages in South Florida
by Palmarum- 6 replies

There are about 420,000 people without power in my county, Broward at the moment. I just got power back for the first time all day, about 10 minutes ago. The streets are a complete disaster without working traffic lights. People do not seem to know what a 4-way stop is. If you can, do not get on the streets. NBC 6 We just now got a tornado warning for Eastern Central Broward County if this wasn't enough. Broward is getting it today... Ryan

This might be old news to the Americans but I was watching the latest season of American Chopper being aired here (one of my favorite shows) and it was mentioned "...now that Vinnie's gone..." So I searched the net a bit and found some news that he really did leave the show. What happened??? Chemistry of that show is liable to change.

Gainesville Marathon/HalfM tomorrow
by metalfan- 11 replies
- 1.1k views
Wish us luck, we're running the 5 Points of Life Half Marathon tomorrow bright and early. Race starts at 7am which is a good thing as the forecast high for tomorrow is almost 80F. I am hoping to run the 13.2 miles in under 2 hours, somewhere between 1:45-1:59, LOL. We'll see. The last time I did this race my time was 2 hours 8 minutes. Should be a nice day for it, all the rain, hail and other severe weather blew through last night (we got almost 2.5 inches of rain!) and there is a 0% chance for precip tomorrow. Hubby will be running the half as a training run for Boston in April, but since he's so much quicker than me I'll be dogging him to the finish.

The Signature Plants of Your Homescape
by DoomsDave- 21 replies

Howdyall: So, Elvis has come to Earth and taken you aboard his spaceship and after a few dozen orbits, you both get dizzy, and he takes you home. But, aside from being dizzy, he and his pilot appear a bit buzzed, so you seek reassurance that you really are home again, e.g., in Oakland California, and not Auckland, New Zealand (or vice versa). In Southern California, I see the signature plants of the local landscape include: Cupressus sempervirens var. "Stricta" or, as the Cable Guy would say "Eye-TALLIAN SIGH-press".

Vacation Ideas??
by JakeK- 18 replies
- 1.3k views
Many of us here on the board have traveled to some really exotic places, so I'm looking for some suggestions. I purchased a week of vacation this year so now I have 15 days of vacation. I'm looking for suggestions on where to spend around 6-8 of those days. I found r/t airfare from Cincinnati to Lima Peru for $850, $900 to Istanbul, $1,200 to Morocco, $850 to London, and $950 to Hawaii. Cincinnati is the most expensive airport to fly out of in the United States by a wide margin, so these prices may not sound like deals to anyone. My entire budget is in the $2,000-$2,200 range, I'm looking to travel in September-October.

Slide Show of my jungle
by Walter John- 22 replies
- 1.1k views
Hi folks, I'm putting together a slide show of recent photos of the palm gardens around my house, I affectionately refer to as my jungle. I always use some background music or tunes and was wondering if anybody has some ideas on songs that would suit a palm slide show, for example "Gone Troppo" by George Harrison, ah what's another example, "Run through the jungle" Creedence etc etc. Please give me some ideas. The slide show would go for about 20 to 25 minutes, so need about 5 or 6 songs. Thanks
