Free Seed Offer for New Members
by Ortanique- 9 replies
- 5.4k views
We have missed sending new seeds to a few new members in the last several months. This message is an attempt to reach out to those new members - requesting them to contact us at plants@ortanique.com (with the subject line "IPS - New Member Seed Offer"). Once we receive your email - you can expect to receive your free seeds within 2 weeks if you are in the US and hopefully 3 - if you live outside of the US. On a related note - while we send out emails requesting confirmation - we do not always get replies in a timely fashion for the seeds to make the shipment within the internal deadlines we have for it. Hopefully - by virtue of this message - we will start receiving t…

I have been trying to renew my membership for a few weeks now and have just discovered the following: On the IPS website the Fax Number is listed as follows: By Fax. Fax your credit card (VISA or MASTERCARD) with the expiration date to: US 513.607.6468. Please write your credit card number clearly and please include either the membership number or the full name and address of the person who is renewing. You may also download and fax or mail the renewal form. Click here for the form. But on the form it is listed as: The International Palm Society 9300 Sandstone Street Austin, TX 78737 USA Fax: 512.607.6468 Which is correct as I don't like faxing my c…

Once a year the IPS has a Board Meeting. On those years when we have a Biennial ("even" years) the meeting always takes place on the day of the Welcome Dinner. Typically from about 9 am to 5 pm and then the Welcome Dinner for all the participants an hour later. On the "in between" years, the Board Meeting is generally just for the Directors and spouses & partners even though we usually do have a few guests as well. A Biennial is a big event with a couple of hundred people. The "in between" meetings are small and intimate and never with more than 35 people or so. Generally, the Board meeting is on a Friday, and then we spend the weekend visiting various gardens. In 200…

I'm in the "frozen North" of Massachusetts - and obviously there won't be many growers up here, but if there are any, I'd love to hear from you! And maybe we can set up a palm/plant sale/swap? Just an idea. I could not find any forum on here regarding "where is everyone" , etc.

IPS website - NEW feature

A great new feature has been added to the IPS website, www.palms.org: a very useful and powerful Search feature. First log in (using your IPS password and log in information) - then select the "Information Search" option under the MEMBERS ONLY button. Then type in a keyword and press Search. One of my favorite all-time articles in Principes/Palms is an article by Don Hodel that was published in (what was then) Principes in 1993. Name of the article: "Growing Palms in Tahiti". If you type in "Hodel" in the Search box, the link is #18 on page 2. The article itself is extremely interesting, with lots of photos (unfortunately black & white), but what I find most fasci…

Questions about Rio trip
by mike in kurtistown- 3 replies

I have some questions about traveling to and living for two weeks in Brazil that I could use some help with. Since the answers will undoubtedly also benefit others on the Forum, I am asking them here. Other Forum members might also have their own questions. No. 1 - How much of our cash, if any, should we change into Reals upon arrival? If we do exchange, do we do it at the airport, or can the hotel change our money into reals? No. 2 - What kind of electrical outlets are used in Brazil? For instance, the outlets in France are different and require a converter before any US electrical device can be plugged in. No. 3 - What kind of internet service is available in t…

Donating to plant societies
by John in Andalucia- 8 replies

I am a member of the European Palm Society (EPS), and like many societies, they host a website. They also accept donations online to pay towards the upkeep and maintenance of their site. As a webmaster myself, I know how time consuming this can be. There are financial costs involved too. One of the easiest ways to accept donations online, is through PayPal, and the EPS have a donate button on their homepage. If money is tight, members will sometimes offer seeds for sale in return for a donation. This has raised my interest lately, since I run a new website for advertisers to sell plant seeds worldwide. I recently added a feature whereby sellers can not only promote th…

The hotel, Windsor Barra, has now released an additional number of rooms, so we have been able to accomodate those who had signed up on the Standby list (on the IPS website), and we do have an additional number of rooms. So, for those who are serious about attending, right about now would be a good time to sign up! In order not to overbook, we will keep the Standby list on the website. Jim Cain, who is handling the registration, will contact each individual with a confirmation.

Brazil 2009 - a prelude to the 2010 Biennial 1 2
by Licuala- 63 replies

John DeMott and I have just returned from Brazil where we met up with Jill Menzel and Randall Quirk, who some of you will remember from the Dominican Republic Biennial. We went to Brazil check out the various day to day sites for the 2010 Biennial and take care of some of the details to make sure this will be an enjoyable and smooth trip for all attendees. To whet your appetite, we thought it would be fun to show you some photos of our trip so you can see what will be awaiting you next April. Over the next several days I will put more and more photos up of the various places we will visit. I will say right now that I think anyone choosing to go on this biennial wi…

IPS Biennial - NOW CLOSED
by bgl- 5 replies

We have now used up our entire initial allotment of rooms at the Windsor Barra hotel. Unfortunately, the hotel has informed us that they are now fully booked, so we have been unable to get addititonal rooms. For this reason, we have no choice but to close registration with immediate effect. We are still looking at other options (hotels nearby) for additional rooms, and there's always the possibility that Windsor Barra may be able to release additional rooms. Considering the holidays, not much is likely to happen for the next two weeks. Hopefully, we'll have more news in a couple of weeks.

Jim Cain, who is in charge of registration for the Biennial in Rio de Janeiro, just sent out an e-mail to a few attendees who will be arriving one day early. The "standard" arrival date is 17 April. If you plan to arrive before this date and IF you want to make a hotel reservation at the Windsor Barra Hotel ("the Biennial hotel") you need to make this reservation yourself. Here's the e-mail from Jim: "Once I got the correct contact person at the hotel (the correct Andréa [Rebello], with her correct email address), making my reservation for an extra night was was really quite painless -- even cleaning up their initial error in what the agreed daily rate included. I d…

IPS/PalmTalk Photo Gallery
by Morabeza- 10 replies

John brought up an issue that I think should be discussed. I have spoken with Dean previously about the issue of just what policy does PalmTalk have in relation to licensing photos that we users upload to the site. He really surprised me when told me I was the first person to ever ask! I realise that hammering out a policy regarding what rights PalmTalk users retain or give up when uploading their images to PalmTalk may not be easy but eventually I believe it will be necessary. Many other sites that are driven by user-based content (as we are) have policies in place not just to protect the rights of their users, but also protect the company or organisation from copy…

Brazil 2010 - Iguassu Falls
by SW_FL_Palms- 17 replies

Since we will be in Brazil, we don't want to miss seeing Iguassu Falls. According to the Biennial Package download, the IPS lists it in under "Other Potential Side Trips", but they are not sponsoring any side trips. Anyone else interested in going ? Anyone (maybe someone from Brazil) can give us some recommendations ? a tour company ? etc.

For those that have been to Brazil and have gotten a Visa, would you please share your experience with us. Attached is a PDF of the Brazilian Visa Application There are several items that you must have before applying including your airline tickets. It also says " If attending a conference or seminar, a letter of invitation from the organization in Brazil which is hosting the event. " Could IPS supply a letter of invitation that we can all use - it does say from the organization in Brazil. Brazilian_visa_application.pdf

BRAZIL - April 2010 1 2 3
by bgl- 84 replies

As most of you know by now, the next Biennial will be in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in April 2010. During the IPS Board meeting at DuPlooy's Jungle Lodge in Belize last week, this was our number one issue, and all aspects were discussed. Some of the more important pieces of information: Official arrival date will be Saturday, April 17, with the welcome dinner that same evening. Exact itinerary is still to be worked out, but it goes without saying that the Rio Botanic Garden will be one of our main destinations. Jill Menzel, who is an IPS Director, has a large ranch about 90 minutes away, with palms in habitat, a garden as well as Golden Tamarind monkeys in their nativ…
