The proper forum for asking questions about palms, germination, etc. is DISCUSSING PALMS WORLDWIDE, the second section on the main page. In DISCUSSING PALMS WORLDWIDE you will find a large group of participants eager to answer questions, admire photos, and share all things about palms, so please post there for the widest exposure. This is the right forum if you have a question or news item regarding the supporting organization THE INTERNATIONAL PALM SOCIETY (IPS). Thank you, and good growing!

Brazil 2009 - a prelude to the 2010 Biennial 1 2

John DeMott and I have just returned from Brazil where we met up with Jill Menzel and Randall Quirk, who some of you will remember from the Dominican Republic Biennial. We went to Brazil check out the various day to day sites for the 2010 Biennial and take care of some of the details to make sure this will be an enjoyable and smooth trip for all attendees. To whet your appetite, we thought it would be fun to show you some photos of our trip so you can see what will be awaiting you next April. Over the next several days I will put more and more photos up of the various places we will visit. I will say right now that I think anyone choosing to go on this biennial wi…

IPS - worldwide numbers 1 2

With reference to the ongoing discussion in the other thread in "Discussing Palm Trees" (Changing face of Palmtalk"), here are some numbers. These are, unfortunately, from Dec 2006 (and were handed out to IPS Directors at the Board meeting in San Francisco in May 2007). I don't have the Dec 2007 info yet, but the discrepancy is probably fairly minor. Number of IPS members: Hawaii/Guam: 86 NE USA: 95 NW USA: 36 South Central USA: 136 SE USA: 554 SW USA: 518 Total: 1425 (FL 494 and CA 474) Other countries: Australia: 83 France: 41 Spain: 41 Germany: 30 UK: 29 Brazil: 24 Italy: 18 Mexico: 14 South Africa: 11 Canada: 11 Thailand: 10 63 countries have…

Okay so you have grown palms for a decade or three and have the basics by now. Along comes a new member to palmtalk who asks something basic or has been misinformed. You think its a stupid question...but to those who dont know all the answers, its important to them or they would not have asked it. Sometimes I notice a distinct lack of kindness to the new members by many of our knowlegable oldsters. Could we not sit back and recall our own first palms and all the things we didnt know about, then be generous with our time and information, maybe a few words of encouragement and making newbies feel welcome will keep them coming back and one day being able to share their own e…

BRAZIL - April 2010 1 2 3

As most of you know by now, the next Biennial will be in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in April 2010. During the IPS Board meeting at DuPlooy's Jungle Lodge in Belize last week, this was our number one issue, and all aspects were discussed. Some of the more important pieces of information: Official arrival date will be Saturday, April 17, with the welcome dinner that same evening. Exact itinerary is still to be worked out, but it goes without saying that the Rio Botanic Garden will be one of our main destinations. Jill Menzel, who is an IPS Director, has a large ranch about 90 minutes away, with palms in habitat, a garden as well as Golden Tamarind monkeys in their nativ…

Costa Rica Biennial Rolecall 1 2 3

At the previous Biennials, there was not a published list of attendees generally available until you got to the host hotel and got your attendee packet. This meant you didn't know if old friends were attending until you got there, but it also lent a little bit of welcome surprise once you got there. I don't really want to know the total attendee list, but I would like to know who on this board is going. Will we be a majority or minority? Is the Palm Talk Board a good recruiter for IPS membership? (I think so!) What I suggest is that anyone answering this post to put their comments at the top of their post and then copy and paste their screen name (and real name i…

The next IPS Board meeting will be in San Jose, Costa Rica, on Saturday May 3rd, 2008. I have been nominated as the next President, taking over from Paul Craft - "licuala" on PalmTalk - who's been the President since the Biennial here in Hawaii in May 2004. PalmTalk is probably the most effective way for the IPS to reach new potential members, and thus make the organization even stronger, more effective in achieving its goals and even more international in its scope. Everybody who's active here, whether you're currently an IPS member or not, should be interested in making this happen. The more activity we have here on PalmTalk, the more interesting things get! We h…

Pre-1989 Palms/Principes

I understand that the IPS is in the process of changing the location and how it deals with back issues. However, I wonder if anyone can tell me whether back issues of the IPS journal (Palms formerly Principes) can be obtained from the IPS (or anyone else) for the volumes prior to 1989?

The IPS website, www.palms.org, has now been updated with the information about GP2, and you can place your order on-line. There's a special price for IPS members, and if you're NOT an IPS member it pays to become one just to get the special IPS membership price. As you will see, anticipated delivery of GP2 is quoted as late December. BUT, the shipment is due to arrive at Allen Press in Kansas in a couple of weeks. The "late December" shipment date was arrived at before we knew the estimated arrival date in Kansas, so I'm hoping that shipment of individual books will be possible before late December. At this point, let's just hope for the best and be pleasantly surpris…

Just to let everybody know what's coming, here's the information about Genera Palmarum 2. This information will be in the next issue of PALMS, due out next month (September): "Genera Palmarum Edition 2 The IPS, LH Bailey Hortorium and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, are proud to announce the new edition of the ground-breaking Genera Palmarum. The second edition is a complete overhaul of the 1987 edition and includes chapters on the structure of palms, pollen, cytology, chemistry, fossils, evolution, phylogeny, natural history and biogeography and the classification based on the latest molecular evidence. The new classification has substantial changes in the composition …

Once a year the IPS has a Board Meeting. On those years when we have a Biennial ("even" years) the meeting always takes place on the day of the Welcome Dinner. Typically from about 9 am to 5 pm and then the Welcome Dinner for all the participants an hour later. On the "in between" years, the Board Meeting is generally just for the Directors and spouses & partners even though we usually do have a few guests as well. A Biennial is a big event with a couple of hundred people. The "in between" meetings are small and intimate and never with more than 35 people or so. Generally, the Board meeting is on a Friday, and then we spend the weekend visiting various gardens. In 200…

Testing... testing... <taps the microphone> is it working? Hmm... a new sub-forum, very good subject. I have been a member of the IPS since the mid 1980's and I can not imagine what the world of palms would be without it. With over 20 years of informative publications and support of local chapters and societies that I have been a member of, I have always enjoyed hearing about what the IPS will be doing next. How long have you been a member and what have you benefited the most from? Ryan

The History of The Palm Society and IPS

This may be fun AND educational. I hope any new or old member will enjoy reading this history. We should include information that the Board of Directors has generated through minutes all the way to stories of hot tubs and rum. If you have memories and even facts to share please help this thread to include information on all the great things The Palm Society and IPS have done through the years. Anyone have information on our start?

The IPS Website

As you've already noticed, the new Palmtalk forum looks fantastic. Unfortunately, the IPS homepage currently lacks the same excitement and appeal. I am heading up the IPS Website committee and need some ideas from members on how to improve the current homepage. Any suggestions are welcome with the goal being a homepage where one can buy books, see an updated roster, view an extensive photo collection, view all back issues of Principes and Palms and perhaps peruse a database with such relevant info as seed germination time and cultivation experiences. The intro also needs quite a bit of work as it now appears a bit drab and mundane. Palms are amazing plants and the we…

Idea for a publication

I'm keen on data threads. In a previous thread we discussed a calculator for identifying palms, but we know there are too many variables. We have a freeze-damage data thread with some excellent data from members, and I'm sure the IPS has the combined knowledge to collate some golden information that could be published as a guide book for palm shoppers. I've always liked pocket books, and can imagine shoppers seeing a palm for sale, and with the aid an IPS Pocket Guide, being able to reference its pot size & age, approximate size, hardiness and other general data. Each page in the guide could feature a review by an IPS forum member. Does that sound like a feasible idea…

IPS Management decision
by bgl- 19 replies

For many years Allen Press has been very instrumental to the IPS. The IPS has had two major, and separate, agreements with Allen Press. One is for the printing of PALMS four times a year. The second contract is for Management, which includes (primarily) keeping track of membership payments and maintaining an up-to-date membership list. After proposals from both Allen Press (AP) and Stansfeld & Fairbrother Inc. (S&F) at the Board meeting in Costa Rica on May 3rd, the IPS Board has now voted to transfer the Management responsibility from AP to S&F. S&F is the company that's been responsible for the development of the new (i.e. current) IPS website, and impro…
