My neighbor, and good friend, Bob Hastings has passed away today from old age. He will be missed. Here's a thread I did from when I first met Bob and toured his garden, before I even knew that someday I'd be living right next door. Rest in peace Bob. I hope all your cosmic ponderings have now been answered. http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/2131-i-found-my-thrill/#comment-35170

Leo Gamble - The Palm Place
by Daryl- 3 replies

Sad news today, one of the most popular of Southeast Queensland's palm nurserymen, and palm lover, Leo Gamble, has passed away. Our thoughts are with his family in this sad time. Leo and his wife Jeanne had one of the premier palm nurseries in Australia, selling and distributing many choice Madagascan and New Caledonian palms, along with many other species from around the world. Their display garden and nursery near Wappa Falls, was outstanding and contained many stunning specimens. Many photos of their garden have appeared on Palmtalk, and the garden will live on in our thoughts for many decades. I don't know what the future holds for Jeanne and the garden, but I know it…

RIP GARY HAMMER, Founder, Worldwide Exotics
by DoomsDave- 3 replies

Today the Los Angeles Times announced the passing of Gary Hammer, 57, who was, among much else, the founder of the esteemed plant nursery, Worldwide Exotics in Lakeview Terrace, California, in the San Fernando Valley. Mr. Hammer was a very widely-traveled plant explorer, who made many trips to Mexico, Australia and South Africa and found many species of drought-tolerant plants that we enjoy today. On August 7, 2011, Mr. Hammer was struck and killed by a car as he crossed a dark street in Tempe, Arizona. He was born in Glendale, California, obtained an Ornamental Horticulture degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1976, and, after a brief career in banking (!) em…

RIP Jimmy Buffet 09.01.2023

Jimmy pasted away last night. It is a sad time for Parrotheads around the world! I have many great memories from the concerts over the years. Always a great party and event, not just a concert. Two most memorable concerts: Miami Marine Stadium in the late 90’s, we chartered a 40 ft sailboat for the concert, rafted up to over a thousand boats, Jimmy played from the barge, we took the dingy up to front of barge, you were front row! Sunrise Musical Theater, don’t remember the year, but bought last minute tickets with a friend, was 2 days before Christmas, Jimmy’s birthday. The whole concert was just him by himself playing on the stage from a stool and lounge cha…

RIP Alfred Razafindratsira

I'm kinda surprised to not find this here yet, but Alfred of the Beccariophoenix alfredii fame and major seed supplier for a huge amount of the Madagascar palms passed away this past Tuesday I believe. I find it comforting that just by happenstance I planted this alfredii on Monday. I have had it for years courtesy Pete Balasky who got the seed from Alfred before it was named. RIP Alfred, a great contributor to the plant and Palm world.

Sadly on Weds (2/20/08) Glynn Whiddon a friend of mine and member of the Palm Society of South Texas passed away. Glynn had been in the palm business in the Rio Grande Valley for 30 some years. His love was palms and tropical plants. Naturally he enjoyed our palm meetings and was always very generous with palm donations to the society. No doubt, the 'palm family' here in Texas, will not be the same with out him... You'll be missed my friend! Jv

Don Ellison passed away yesterday. For those that don't know him, he published a Palm book back in 2001 that was widely circulated. https://books.google.com.au/books/about/Cultivated_Palms_of_the_World.html?id=STrAt8uYb-QC&source=kp_book_description&redir_esc=y&fbclid=IwAR1BQp7BqJ-5ZH1PLZH5Ujw73285Fr9KLuED-wM2sDycNnroFl3HlMv-Ij0 Don was also involved in many horticultural projects and businesses and was recently nominated for the Order of Australia for his contribution to Australian horticulture. His family runs one of the largest Howea seed/seedling export operations in Australia. Funnily I drove past his old place a couple of weeks ago. …

Ray Baker

Yesterday Ray Baker died after a tough battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Lyon Arboretum would not be what it is today without his decades of intense dedication to its collections. He was passionate about palms. His illness forced him to retire from the arboretum in September. He had been fighting a very tough battle against the illness, especially in the past year, but we all hoped he would get to live longer. The legacy that Ray left is immense. He poured the last 38 years of his life into the Arboretum. His passing is a huge loss for Lyon and the botanical community in Hawai'i and around the world. In September he created a foundation to support the…

The most interesting man in the world

I just got a call this morning from the son of Max Wurzel of the San Fernando valley. He called to say his dad had passed a few days back and he was going thru his phone book calling all his friend w/the news. Max lived to 95 and packed more adventure into those years than any 5 others I know. He was a gardener/groundskeeper by trade, but an Indiana Jones by nature. The day I first met him, he invited me over to see his garden- all things tropical, as you can only grow in that area and with 80+ yrs of experience. He then sat me down for a mesmerizing couple hours looking at several slide shows of his travels, mostly to South America. …

Jimmy Mintken

I know a lot of us old-timers and especially palm afficionados in Northern California will remember our colorful and good natured friend Jim Mintken who moved away to Costa Rica nearly twenty years ago. Word came to me recently that Jim passed away in Costa Rica in December, and most of his old friends did not know until recently. He had contacted me last fall about getting together during the C.R. Biennial, and then I could no longer reach him. I have spread the word of his passing by phone to a few of the old gang in CA. I am sure there a lot of us who can share some fun and zany memories of Jim and his parties in his beautiful garden in the Russian River area of no…

PSST loss

For anyone that has ever attended our Palm Society of South Texas (PSST) Christmas meetings, you'll fondly remember Mrs. Santa Claus, aka Ruth Merrill. For many many years, Ruth graciously hosted the PSST Christmas party at her beautiful Bay View home. Without a doubt, this is our biggest society meeting of the year and it always took a lot to host 70-90 guests. Ruth loved having everyone over as she truly enjoyed the Christmas season and this meeting in particular where she could see so many beloved friends. Ruth last hosted our society in Dec 2008. She had plans for hosting the 2009 meeting but took ill and just couldn't manage such an undertaking. All of us in PS…

Ken Adcock has passed away
by Tyrone- 2 replies

On Sat 12th of October 2013, Ken Adcock, one of the founding members of the Palm and Cycad Society of Western Australia passed away. Ken worked for a long time in the WA Agricultural department and his love of palms was shared by his close friend and work colleague Peter Skinner. Together they decided to start PACSOWA back in 80's. I always found Ken a very helpful and knowledgable individual who was very supportive of those interested in gardens, but especially palms and cycads. His passing comes as a huge shock and he will be greatly missed. The WA tropical plant growing scene will be much poorer due to his absence. Goodbye Ken.

I have recently received the very sad news that our member Hugh Harries died on 7th February after a short illness. Hugh was passionate about coconuts and published widely, particularly on the origin and dispersal of Cocos nucifera. One of his most important papers is that in Botanical Reviews 44:265-319 (1978) but he also wrote several more light-hearted papers in Principes (now PALMS) such as "Darwin and the robber crab" and "Nuts to the garden of Eden" which, nevertheless have serious intent. We shall miss his sense of fun and his deep passion for his subject.
