Attalea colenda

One year old seedling left outside unprotected but under a roof, inside a pool enclosure. During freeze event when outside temperatures reached 23.5°F, but subject location saw probably just below freezing, leaves started shrinking and turning dark green. After recovery, leaves have necrotic/dead edges but 70% of the leaf area is a healthy, shiny green. Freeze events during December only. One month after (yesterday) the spear pulled. Humid/brown but no signs of fungus/bacteria attack. More tender than I thought. Other palms in pots nearby (Dypsis, etc.) didn't blink an eye.

I have no idea why this plant was alive without the freeze, but it looks perfect after the freeze as well. The temps were 27F, but the palm was below canopy. Gary

Have three of these planted around the yard. Two along the east side of the house where sun hit first... also some Brugmansias overhead. No damage on the 27F night of the big freeze... but 6" seedling in lawn totally unprotected is basically killed... 8 days later, and this 'killed' seedling still has green in newest leaf... think it might make it. http://davesgarden.com/journal/j/si/114377/

I've read no one has been brave enough to test out how low this palm can go. So, I kept a potted one out under oak. It saw consecutive mornings of near freezing temps. 35F one morning. No frost. I wasn't brave enough to let it sit out when I knew it was going near 32. But, mine survived 35F with no visible damage. Its about 3 years old in a pot. Its currently in the house so its protected now.

Florida Christmas Freeze 2022 1 2

This freeze impacted areas north of a line from Roseland, FL to Arcadia, FL to St Petersburg, FL. Temperatures dropped into the 20's as far south as Lakeland, FL, and temperatures dropped into the teens for areas in the Panhandle. There were several nights of cold, spanning from the 22nd to the 26th. In central FL, not all of these nights dipped below freezing, but temperatures in the 30's did occur. My official low was 19F in my back yard, although i suspect that the front yard may have been 17F or 18F based on the degree of damage to my Queen. I will be posting pictures of my palms in my yard here, and i encourage anyone else with any damage to post them here …

Trithrinax

No one has reported on Trithrinax yet. It's no secret that they are extreamly cold hardy and will take the mid teens but one of mine is getting cold tested for the first time. That is T. biflabellata. (aka, schizophylla) It's the dwarf of the group. Mine is 17 years old and only about 3.5' in heigth and has 6 heads. It's growing in an exposed area and looks fine after 23F. It was covered with white frost many nights this year. No damage what so ever, and appears to still be slowly growing through this misserable winter. My other two species are T. campestris and acanthocoma (aka. brasiliensis), both very hardy. Dick

Last January I had three back to back nights/mornings when temperatures dropped into the 20s F, with my worst night dropping to 23.5 degrees in the open yard. Under tree canopy my lowest low was 28 degrees. As such, about 80 percent of my crown shaft palms were devastated, except for some, for some reason, that were located on two particular areas of my property. For some reason these palms had very little cold/frost damage. But to my point, the A. cunninghamiana palm below was totally defoiliated from the three nights of freezing temperatures. Last year I made a posting asking when I could expect my A. cunninghamina and alexandrae species palms to start producing seed…

Acrocomia (previously Gastrococus) crispa
by Austinpalm- 2 replies
- 4.3k views
I've seen this palm listed as a zone 10a palm. Other Acrocomia have proven to be hardy to at least 9a with occassional reports of hardiness to the upper teens (8b). Has anybody had an experience with A. crispa surviving zone 9a temperatures or cooler? I have seen some seeds for sell and am curious if there is even a chance of growing it here. On a side note. An A. mexicana I have planted appears to have survived 16F with significant damage. It is putting on new growth though.

Stretched specimen, planted spring?summer? 2006. Newest leaf is shorter, so in-ground height now about 4 ft. No direct canopy, but in the shadow of a 30-ft strelitzia nicolai, morning sun, afternoon shade. Lowest low 31, dry. Oldest leaf, which was already fading, looks dryer. Newest leaf (yes, only two!) appears unchanged.

Verschaffeltia splendida
by Rusty on Pine Is.- 8 replies

Verschaffeltia splendida , bronzing on all but one leaf, and that single one is off color.......grown under canopy, so no frost although had spotty areas in the open, lowest here abt 34.5 during the 7-10 day event. I would guess that this is less acute injury and is more chronic damage, largely precursed by the prolonged below 40 temps.

Eighteen or so little babies, in gallon-and-a-half pots, about 12" tall. Under ficus trees, no damage after 3 days of temperatures in nearby exposed area of 24.8 F, and one immediately following day of 28 F, all cold all night. Dave

Hello, new to this forum and palm trees. Thanks for all the insightful posts! I'm located in Hattiesburg, MS (zone 8) and received severe burn on 2 Phoenix sylvestris(3 foot of trunk)and 1 Phoenix canariensis (2 foot of trunk) despite some limited protection. We had at least 3 nights of 15-16F weather during the recent snap. The only positive news is some green is still present on the emerging center buds. I was told to leave on all the dead foliage for added protection as there may be a chance of recovery when spring/summer arrives. Really hope so as they have done really well during the prior 2 winters. I tied up the dead foliage on the trees to help shield the cente…

I bought these as one gallon plants in the spring of 2004 expecting to enjoy them for one summer. They have never gotten enough water, and I can't honestly say they have ever grown, but here they are...still. They are under shade cloth against a south east facing fence. Before this freeze event, I threw a tarp over the shade cloth. They looked like this in July. I'm going to start taking better care of them!

I got a couple of these seedlings about 2 years ago from Floribunda. I was expecting a vry marginal grower, but these have proven to be the most robust Veitchias I have. They've grown well, they stay outside all year, & so far they have not ever cold spotted. They are still in pots, under canopy. Not intimating that they're the palm of the future for SoCal, just that they've seen temps regularly in the 30'sf with no trouble. Better than any other Veitchia I've ever had.

18F in north Florida w/ heavy frost. Event was unusual as it was preceded by an extended warm period of over two weeks with several days reaching highs into the 80s(F). Plant showed no damage. Plant is small, not showing its blue color yet and is located in a well drained raised bed. Interestingly, a few Trachycarpus wagnerianus plants located nearby lost their spears (all have recovered) during this event.

4 foot strap leaf in raised planter bed for 2 years. 27F--no damage. Was previously more sensitive and brown spotted during Winter. But this year finally started growing much more quickly. Just a more established plant, perhaps.
