The one in my backyard was protected for both freezes, but it was protected differently for each one. The first one, which saw a low of 18.1F, it was fully protected. The second, which saw a low of 23F, had only the trunk and spear area protected. The fronds were left out in the open. The fronds have shown no sign of cold damage, not even spotting. Will continue to monitor and provide updates as needed. I protected it in some way for both freezes as the cold hardiness with these is not widely known. As it gets bigger ill allow it to be exposed to deeper freezes to experiment.

Keep us please apprised about cold hardiness of your tender palms in the affected areas. Such cold spell is extremely rare and perhaps once in a life time opportunity comes up for some serious hardiness test in the warm temperate/subtropical climate.

Can my D. cabadae be saved?
by palmpuppy- 24 replies

I thought this D cabadae was lost after a particularly cold winter but a couple of months ago, I noticed this tiny shoot. However, it doesn't seem to be growing, yet it and the trunk are green. Should I try re-potting it in palm/cactus mix only? Keep it in the sun? I really don't know what to do with it but would like to save it. The Dypsis... The green tip The trunk showing green Thanks for any help Jackie

Help, please: what is the recommended application mix-ratio for Captan 50WP for bud-drench, trunk and trunk-base-root treatment for post-frost-damage/cool-wet-spring fungus avoidance? I have been told to alternate two treatments of copper and Captan. The Copper (SouthernAg liquid concentrate) has the mix rate, but the Captan 50WP (AgriStar) does not. Many forums recommend the Captan for prophylactic fungus treatment for the Mexican Fan Palm, but none of the manufacturers* have a mix rate on the label for palms - only for fruit and ornamentals. Two local palm sellers recommended the minimum mix ratio on the label. Also: Any position on the efficacy of hydrogen peroxi…

Carpentaria acuminata

I have two young (not yet flowering) Carpentaria acuminata in the yard. I suspect both will flower in 2010--stem elongation seems to have slowed, indicating that the plants might be shifting resources away from vegetative growth. Both are exposed to the sky, though there are laurel oaks nearby and the palms are partly shaded during some hours of the day, especially in winter. The taller one suffered no apparent damage from cold, the shorter only minor leaf browning. In the long Cold Spell of 2010, our coldest night was 28 at 10:30, then up to 32 or 33, then back to 29 near dawn. The coldest other night was 30 (based on official data from the airport, less than a mile t…

Three specimens, in the ground, about 1 m (3 feet) tall, about 2" (5 cm) across the base, 80%+ leaf damage after three nights of 24.8 (-4C), and another night of 28.7 F. (-1 C). Look sad, sad sad.

My Caryota has thrown a spear! Many nights of 20-25 F, with at least a month of below freezing every night. Totally defoliated. But, it was 12 ft tall and is now 13, with the added spear. I thought it was seriously dead, but It's Alive! (With the help of R-13 pink fiberglass insulation until mid-April).

Also,40-45C for days in the greenhouse ->no damage at all and no slowing in growth P.s.:This is previous year's experience as i dont have these palms anymore due to pesticide toxicity that killed them all

Have a 4' tall specimen been growing great year round... not even a hint of damage or slowing down when temps got 120F here!! And this last weekend temps got down to 25-27F most places in the yard, though this plant is planted between two Italian Cypress... not a hint of damage.... even though Chamaedorea metallica planted under it was pretty badly scorched. Just visited nearby nursery (1 week after the 'big one'): 2 5 gal plants, 2' overall height with a tiny bit of protection from a now fried King palm in a larger pot right next to them: both have moderate to severe leaf damage from a low of 26F (no idea how long), but newest leaves and spikes look OK. Was actuall…

Planted this in a protected spot in my 8b garden as an experiment. Well we just had back to back weekends of winter nonsense, freezing rain and 19° then snow and 19°. The first weekend my weather station wasn't working so I can't verify my yard actually saw 19° but the second weekend I can. Today will be 2 weeks since the initial event and here's how it looks. We hit 70 degrees yesterday and today.

In a protected entrance courtyard position with overhead canopy next to house where low was closer to 25F & 26F several nights with no frost (versus 24F low in open), virtually no damage. Approximately 5.5 feet tall, two individuals planted in same planter. Edit: Only one or two fronds have a bit of spotting. Currently throwing a couple new spears and beginning to flower, so this freeze did not slow this one down in the least.
