22f under butia canopy. Zero burn. Johnsonii is more leaf hardy than communis. Same plant took 18 last year with strong wind and partially burned, but 14f completely defoliated it, but didnt kill it. Trunk is still subterranean.

Majesty Palm (Ravenea rivularis)

We planted this Majesty Palm 3 years ago. It is about 12 foot tall with about 1 foot of clear trunk. It's planted pretty close to the house but gets North winds. We always wrap the trunk with Christmas lights and try to cover it with frost cloth when we know below freezing weather or frost is coming. We had 2 days with light frost and a brief drop in temps to 27 that caught us off guard so the palm was not covered. Some of the fronds got burned badly but this thing grows so quickly you can hardly tell it suffered any damage. The picture below was taken August of 2008.

Majesty Palm Sees 28 Degrees (F)
by PalmTreeDude- 1 reply

So my Madjesty Palm saw 28 degrees (F) and to make matters worse it was in a pot, this is in Virginia on the boarder of zone 7a/7b and from what I have heard Madjesty Palms are a zone 9b palm. This palm has been good with no damage to 30 degrees (F) in the pot. It loved the cold as you can see!

I wanted to post a photo of my 3-year-old or Mauritia flexuosa that survived despite not being protected and being in an open area of my yard when the temperature dropped to 35 degrees Fahrenheit when I was out of town

Medemia argun

Small seedling, about 6 months old, growing in pot filled with dry mixture of soil and sand, couldn't stand our cool/cold winter and succumbed after a cold spell during which the lowest temperature stayed above freezing (around 35F) but there were several days of persistent cold temperatures, above freezing but below 42F. Definitely wanted a warm weather rebound but unfortunately at that time of the year it wouldn't find any.

My bottle is officially dead
by JungleGina- 3 replies

My bottle palm is officially dead. It took 3 people to lift it into my truck in 2007 when I dug it from the yard of a friend who had no idea what it was and didn't want it. I happily offered it a new home. All was going well for a while. But the freezes of the last 3 winters have been slow death for this poor palm. And tonite we're forecast for 39 degrees and tomorrow for 38. Of course it's obviously too late already. March 2010 March 2011 I thought it might recover... Feb 2012 Sorry buddy

My Palms in snow
by Juni Perez- 1 follower

I usually leave my potted palm trees out in the yard until mid-December, bring them in to an enclosed porch (temps go down to the mid teens F at lowest), then bring them back out to the yard between late March/early April. These are shots from before bringing them in this past weekend. The lowest temps we've seen this past month was 10°F in my yard last Thursday. T. wagnerianus: Butia capitata: T. fortunei: NOTE: These are links to the pictures direct from Facebook. Some companies block them. They all showed slight leaf damage, but are fine. I worry more about letting all that snow seep into the pots when it melts though. The only in-ground pal…

Nannorrhops arabica (Silver)
by TexasColdHardyPalms- 6 replies

To start off with I am very disappointed with this silver variant of Nannorrhops. 1G and 3G specimens burned with frost and 27-28 degrees and I even lost a few, while the smaller 1G green Ritcieana. look great. I will leave larger ones outside to test next winter which should be larger 5G's by that time. I don't know how these naturalize in the mountains of Afghanistan if they can't handle high 20's and frost. From what I see our normal winter would 100% completely kill 3G's and smaller. These are not even Zone 9B when small.

Need Help Houston Freeze Please!
by palmpalm01- 0 replies

All- I am victim of the Houston Freeze. I currently have Med fans almost perfect condition. Just to note. I fertilized my palms and saturated the ground with Clearys 3306 systemati and super thrive. I sprayed throats with pump sprayer of clearys. Going to spray copper or hydrogen Peroxide this weekend I hit every palm with 5gallon of water and super thrive. Here is what is remaining of Medjools and Sylvesters. Looks dismal. I don't plan on removing fronds until I see green. Do I need to take out the very top? When I spray with Hyrogen Peroxide can you provide instructions for how much Hydrogen Peroxide per gallon of water. …

Needle Palm Surviving Indiana
by Quasarecho- 0 replies

Fingers crossed, my Needle Palm seems mostly unscathed (as well as a couple of Southern Magnolias). We had a Christmas weekend blizzard/winter storm in the Great Lakes region. Temps down to about 9 below F. I wrapped the magnolias in a teepee of sheets and burlap. The Needle is near the house and has been in the ground for the past 1 1/2 years. I did pile about a foot of oak leaves around the Palm and threw a rug over it for the 3 coldest days. Windchills were down to about 40 - 50 below zero F. So far all looks good. Back into the 60s a week after the storm. Maybe their leaves will tell a different story in the spring. I've got McCurtain seedlings ready to…

I’m new to this so please bare with me. I have 2 queen palms (one that’s 12 ft tall & the other that’s 7 ft) that have been planted in our house early this summer. The palms are being heavily watered & heavy mulching already added. Antitranspirant Spray added & Christmas lights added around the trunks as well. I’ve ordered frost wraps but my order is delayed & won’t arrive until tomorrow. I live in Jacksonville, FL & tonight it will be 35 degrees but with gale force winds will cause a wind chill in the teens (very unusual climate for here) & tomorrow it will be a low of 27. Local stores & palm nurseries are out of stock of frost covers & …

Normanbya normanbyi in the ground about 10 months from a 2 gal. pot. Its between a fence and a boat but otherwise unprotected. The temps went below 50F around 9:30 pm on the Dec. 23rd and didn't get back to 50F until 11:30 am on the 26th. Temps went below 35F on around 5:30 am on the 24th and stayed there until 8:30 am. It never got above 46 on the 24th and again went below 35F at 3:00 am on the 25th and stayed below that until 9:30 am. Ultimate low on the morning of the 24th was 34F and ultimate low on the morning of the 25th was 31.8. No frost but we did have some sleet on Christmas morning. The palm is about 4.5 to 5 feet tall and showed very little damage as of now 1 …

Floridians have theirs, South Cal have theirs (aka Palmpedia), time for those of us who live in North California (or in similar climates across the globe, like the northern Mediterranean coast) to make a freeze damage record. I guess most of this region belongs to the zones 9a to 10a with rainy winters. It would be useful to see how different species react to the freezes we get. So, if you have had frosts/freezes in your garden, please let us know how your plants have fared. Palms or not. Later I will combine everything in a spreadsheet. Please write temperatures, species of plants and observed damage. Personally, I cannot contribute anything yet as our winter h…

Northwest Louisiana Snovid-21

Pictures from an all time low of 0.5F in Sarepta Louisiana. I wrapped them up with blankets and a tarp/trash bags. The small Sabals I covered with 3 gallon pots and a 10 lbs weight. They have obvious sign of burn. So far all center spears are good. Thanks for all the good advice to keep it dry on the front end. I believe that was the difference for survival in what is called a 100 year storm.

Orania palindan
by cfkingfish- 0 replies

Two plants: 3 gallon showed 50% damage after being covered with a trashcan after 29 and 31. 15 gallon (7 ft OA, softball sized base) in a little more protected location shows about 20% leafburn from uncovered leaves. The old leaves on this palm get brittle and break rather than drop, it is very interesting.
