Attalea Rostrata: How cold can it take?
by Sandy Loam- 0 replies
- 2.2k views
Does anyone know what type of cold temperatures (in degrees Celcius or Fahrenheit) an Attalea Rostrata can tolerate without defoliating? I am willing to tolerate some minor bronzing in winter, but not defoliation. I saw an old post on this forum describing palm damage during the historic 1989 freeze in Orlando, Florida, USA. Apparently, Attalea Rostrata "survived". It was not clear to me whether it survived wtih flying colours or barely survived and defoliated entirely. I would be grateful to receive any information concerning Attalea Rostrata survivals, the lowest temperature experienced, and the degree of damage, if any. Many thanks, Sandy.

Small seedling, about 6 months old, growing in pot filled with dry mixture of soil and sand, couldn't stand our cool/cold winter and succumbed after a cold spell during which the lowest temperature stayed above freezing (around 35F) but there were several days of persistent cold temperatures, above freezing but below 42F. Definitely wanted a warm weather rebound but unfortunately at that time of the year it wouldn't find any.

RAPHIA AUSTRALIS

A robust seedling, almost 3' tall, growing in a pot, after persistent cold weather and many nights and days with temperatures steadily below 8C / 46F, but no actual freeze (the lowest it got was around 1.5C / 34.5F), finally succumbed to the cold. Better said, it was completely toasted. So, not cold hardy at all, at least as a seedling in pot culture.

18F in north Florida w/ heavy frost. Event was unusual as it was preceded by an extended warm period of over two weeks with several days reaching highs into the 80s(F). Plant showed no damage. Plant is small, not showing its blue color yet and is located in a well drained raised bed. Interestingly, a few Trachycarpus wagnerianus plants located nearby lost their spears (all have recovered) during this event.

Aiphanes minima
by Jason in Orlando- 1 reply

From February 2012 advective freeze. The ultimate low temp is unknown. I had a 15 gallon A. minima left outside when the forecast low was to be about 37F/2C. Cold front came through about 4am local time and dropped the temperature from about 40F to near freezing in two hours with high winds. Water in bird bath was frozen. There was no frost. The palm had no overhead protection, but it was sheltered from the NW wind by the house and the orchid shadehouse, as well as the fronds of other neaby palms of similar size. A week later there is no damage other than some minor leaf spotting on one of the more exposed fronds and some slight burn. Temperature was likely not …

My bottle is officially dead

My bottle palm is officially dead. It took 3 people to lift it into my truck in 2007 when I dug it from the yard of a friend who had no idea what it was and didn't want it. I happily offered it a new home. All was going well for a while. But the freezes of the last 3 winters have been slow death for this poor palm. And tonite we're forecast for 39 degrees and tomorrow for 38. Of course it's obviously too late already. March 2010 March 2011 I thought it might recover... Feb 2012 Sorry buddy

In zone 7b/8a, and with some protection (cover plus light bulb at base for heat), all spears pulled in spring 2011. However, it regrew and by mid summer, it looks healthy. Coldest temp. 15f. No days with high temp lower than 32f.

Beccariophoenix alfredii

Well from my experience of germinating seeds of Beccariophoenix alfredii, the soil needs temperatures in the high 20s to 30s, for it to germinate. After sprouting, the soil high temperature still needs to be maintained to develop the rooting systems and the first leaf. Soil temps in the teens will stop early growth.

We are concerned about our Foxtails. This was the second harsh winter for these Palms. Although, they keep pushing up spears of new growth, the damaged, dried up fronds on the bottom of the Foxtails are slow to fall away. The cylindrical boots that these dead fronds are attached to are still green and healthy looking. Usually, the frond and boot wither together and fall off as one piece. Should we be concerned? Is anyone familiar with this situation. We are well aware that the Foxtails are self-cleaning and should not be tampered with to accelerate the process. Here is a photo of one of our Foxtails.

Rhapis humilis

I have a Rhapis humilis that survived the 2009/2010 winter that had lows of 19.3 on two occasions (if memory serves me right). This winter with lows of 24 I thought would be a snap however I did something stupid. I left a sprinkler on a created a Winter not Wonderland but a Hellish Artic Nightmare. My humilis (ten trunks about three foot tall) now has spear pull. Does anyone have any experience with cold damaged humilis?

Syagrus X Juebae
by Gallop- 6 replies

I have 2 Syagrus X Juebae growing in ground for 2yrs. Both had gone pinnate this past summer. They survived last winter w/ overhead protection. In the low 20s for many days. They pulled through OK. This year no overhead protection and saw low 23F or so with heavy frost. Within a few weeks they went into rapid decline 1 plant spear pulled the other doesn't look to healthy it might make it ,we'll see. I'm coming to the conclusion these won't make it here in Pensacola Fl. it's to bad they are such a neat palm, they look quite different at an early age than the rest of my hybrids. On the other hand both my JXS took the last 2 winters like a champ.

Attalea colenda

One year old seedling left outside unprotected but under a roof, inside a pool enclosure. During freeze event when outside temperatures reached 23.5°F, but subject location saw probably just below freezing, leaves started shrinking and turning dark green. After recovery, leaves have necrotic/dead edges but 70% of the leaf area is a healthy, shiny green. Freeze events during December only. One month after (yesterday) the spear pulled. Humid/brown but no signs of fungus/bacteria attack. More tender than I thought. Other palms in pots nearby (Dypsis, etc.) didn't blink an eye.
