Zone 8b Woes

Hey! new to the site and not really sure where to begin: finally decided to just make a general post about cold hardiness with palms in NW FL zone 8b. My botanical interests started when I fell in love with the lush northern canopy trees living in Illinois. Moving back to Northern Florida (where I had lived as a child) though, my interest in growing palm trees just took off. After moving back in 2007, I have had a long list of palm and tropical plant endeavor's with many of which never pulled through brutal zone 8b winters. Here's some detailed experience I've had with some "hot" species that are attempted to be grown here frequently. Chinese Fan Palm: F…

Cold Weather Damage?
by petey- 4 replies

We have had an unusually cold and windy Winter. This palm has decided to send its new shoots in this manner. They are not spears, all five are partially open, showing the ribbing. Growth is very slow. What do think is going on?

Copernicia ekmanii

Forgot to bring in this 1 gal Copernicia ekmanii during our quick cold snap last week. My house had a low of 35F for about 4 hours. The next day the outer leaves looked fried but the center spear and newest leaf were green. Tonight, one week later, the spear and leaf pulled. Treating it with hydrogen peroxide.

Anybody got any info on these? Got to be pretty cold hardy considering the altitudes they grow. Maybe another Chamaedorea for 9a/8b climates?

Friday night/Saturday morning was our first freeze of the year, didn't really have time to protect everything like I had originally planned. These were hourly temperatures: 8:00-32F 9:00-31F 10:00-29F 11:00-29F 12:00-27F 1:00-25F 2:00-23F 3:00-21F 4:00-20F 5:00-20F 6:00-20F 7:00-21F 8:00-31F 9:00-36F 4' Butia odorata (in the middle of the yard): no damage 2' Chamaerops humilis (in the middle of the yard): no damage 3' Washingtonia robusta (in corner of two brick walls): no damage 2' washingtonia robusta (in the middle of the yard): 1-1.5" of leaflet tips burned 1' Washingtonia "filibusta" (in the middle of the yard): no damage 4' Trachycarpus fortunei…

Freeze Damage in S.Central Texas
by petey- 2 replies

I don't know that this will prove of value to anyone, but here's the info: Winter 2013--Veitchia Merrillii, anyway Christmas Palm---potted that year from seed. in plastic 16 oz cups, 2 leaves. Put in an enclosure, 3 X 6', with a single layer plastic tarp, and a clamp-on 75W bulb, this arrangement under a 22' high overhang. Temp dropped to 19 deg for about two hours---no damage. This was the coldest of quite a few below freezing nights. July 2014, these are in larger pots now, and have 6 leaves. On the other front---Pigmy date, in 3 gal pot, no cover, four trees in pot, pretty large leaf array. This sitting under a 20' overhang, in a shallow entryway--two trees …

Some are OK, some are dying!

I recently moved into a house in the bay area, CA. There are about a dozen palms around the house. I have no experience with them. To my eyes, many are not doing well. I even found two dead trees, with trunk in the ground. I have pictures taken. I asked my neighbors and someone at Lowes garden department. They mentioned 2014 winter has been cold, so it can be due to freeze damage. The question I have is why these palms 100 feet from each other, but they look very different. Some are OK, some are dying! Palm (1) looks OK. Palm (3) is dying. So far, I had only put palm food in March. What else should I do to save them?

AAA Florida General Palm Hardiness Data

This was found posted on a website and summarizes a lot of cold hardiness data. Reposting this here for general availability. reprinted from "The Palmateer" Dec., 1999 My main purpose in tackling this particular subject is to demonstrate to palm growers (the hobbyist & the commercial grower alike) the vast array of palms that can be grown with a little effort in central Florida. However it is necessary to preface a subject this "all encompassing" with a few of the obvious disclaimers, the first being micro-climates : lakes and other waterways to the north or north west of our gardens, tall plants that can provide windbreaks and large oak trees or other eve…

Hi, I have a question for you, on this species of Trachycarpus. A bought this species in spring 2012. This palm, grow very fast. The fastest than all my Trachycarpus. But I do not know how it is resistant to frost? Whence comes this species of Trachycarpus? I post photos later .

parajubaea sunkha

5 days of freezing temps, one day all the way to 26.6F, several leaves on a 15 gallon double got 30% burn damage. This specimen was 10 feet away from a copernicia alba that was untouched by the cold. This palm isn't very hardy as a seedling. The reports that this palm is hardy to 20F cannot be right. People are probably protecting their palms through their freezes. My p. cocoides seedlings have fared much better.

Three divided leaves seedling, planted 2 years ago, below arch. cunninghamiana canopy, 32F low, high 30's for a week, all leaves showing burn damage. No damage on royal palm and dypsis decarii. This palm seems to be touchy at seedling stage. I will enhance the protection.

Dypsis lastelliana Highland Form
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 2 replies
Dypsis lastelliana highland form dried up except for new leaf and spear. Cold exposure: 31F, two nights for 4 hour freezes in my upper garden, with several more days close to freezing. It was barely cold enough to burn the tip of banana leaves 2 feet away, and a Cordyline fruticosa right next to the lastelliana was untouched, most of the bananas are still green. There was even overhead canopy. This thing is a wimp, needs an 11a climate somewhere along the coast in Southern California.

Cyrtostachys renda x elegans
by Dorian- 18 replies

A hybrid version of renda going around, that seems to have a bit more cold hardiness. Not quite the same bright red as renda, but still very striking, and would be a great addition if it lived here in coastal SoCal. Sacrificed a seedling outside over the past few months to provide some data. Good news: it was perfectly happy under 55F, unlike renda. It was actually happy all the way down to about 46-47F. Once it hit 41-44F, it promptly snuffed it over the span of two nights. A slightly larger one might have done better.

thanksgiving freeze in Louisiana

weatherbug waetherstation about a mile away read 31 as low. I placed a digital acurite suction cup type on the ground in the middle of the lawn. It read 27 as the low. Frost all over the lawns and roofs. So far, my insulation for the palms looks like it worked. Jubaeopsis no damage, Dypsis lutescens no damage. Unprotected Alocasia looks like wilted lettuce. Suprisingly, Hass avocado looks fine.

Veitchia joannis

Its surprising there arent many cold hardiness reports on this so beautiful species. I decided to try it anyway after reading a post of Eric(Erin in Orlando) mentioning 2 mature V. joannis surviving -3C. Anyway, here is my report: 1m tall Veitchia joannis planted last summer,in a good microclimate and relatively close to a retaining wall(retaining 3meters of soil on the other side of it),experienced multiple hail events and a low of around -1C to -1,5C at the coldest part of the night, just before sunrise, with just slight leaf edge damage of 1-2mm Its already 2 weeks from the last cold and temperatures have been very high all this time, even allowing growth on Bism…

Lepidorrhachis mooreana

I have several of these in ground ranging from 5 to 15 gallon size. Two of the smaller ones are near the coldest part of the yard, which saw at least 2 nights of 29F temps. They look really good. It's no surprise that they prefer cool temps, but my guess is that they will handle cold perhaps as low as 26F or 27F before showing damage. The largest one I have was also undamaged during the 2007 event which was even worse than this one.
