Encephalartos ferox

20f, completely defoliated both of these with ease. I have seen burn on ferox begin at 28f and any frost or ice will burn them. These plants took 16f last year unprotected and didnt die. However one only had one abnormal flush that looked like it was close to death. Both have basketball size caudices.

22f under butia canopy. Zero burn. Johnsonii is more leaf hardy than communis. Same plant took 18 last year with strong wind and partially burned, but 14f completely defoliated it, but didnt kill it. Trunk is still subterranean.

Are my Queen Palms dead?

New to Palm talk, so please excuse me if this is a redundant topic. I live on the North side of Houston TX - and have, or had, seven queen palms in the 8-10 ft range that were in the ground in my yard for 3 full years. In Jan 2017, we had a hard freeze, around 19 degrees, that lingered well into the next day. All the queen palms took it very hard, with all losing all their fronds over 1-2 months. I waited a couple of months, and saw nothing positive happening even though we had an extraordinarily warm Feb - in the upper 80's. I'd read about stumping, cutting off a foot or so until you didn't see any rot. I cut three - still about 8' tall - on two I saw cores in th…

Macrozamia Communis and Johnsonii
by TexasColdHardyPalms- 1 reply
I have one of each planted beneath a grove on Butia Catarensis. The butia experienced 50-60% burn this winter when we dropped down to 13.6 here at the house with 30+ consecutive hours below freezing. While both Macrozamia completely burned the Johnsonii faired much better as it came out with new green foliage a full month before the communis. However they are both alive and well today.

Freeze Damage - What to do?
by jibit3- 0 replies
My wife and I just bought a new house in New Orleans with two palm trees in the front yard. This is the first time I have ever owned palm trees. Unfortunately, one of the two palms started to lose a considerable amount of bark from around its trunk. I did some research and the only thing I was able to find as to why this may be happening was freezing weather which would damage the palm and create oppurtunities for fungal and bacterial growth. I'm not sure if this is the case, but we had temperatures drop to as low as 20 degrees fahrenheit recently and a considerable amount of wind. I sprayed each palm tree with "Bonide Liquid Copper Fungicide". What'…

AAAA - Virginia Palm Freeze Damage Data

A few of my palms did have some damage, one Butia had a lot of browning (it was covered with a bucket), another Butia had tip browning (it was covered in a large pot), and my Mediterranean Fan Palm had a lot of browning on random places (covered with a wooden structure and a tarp). My Needle Palm and Windmill Palm appear to be fine. The windmill had a tarp over it and many layers under and the needle had no protection. No heat was applied to any of these palms.

So my Madjesty Palm saw 28 degrees (F) and to make matters worse it was in a pot, this is in Virginia on the boarder of zone 7a/7b and from what I have heard Madjesty Palms are a zone 9b palm. This palm has been good with no damage to 30 degrees (F) in the pot. It loved the cold as you can see!

Who is ready for the winter? I am not, especially not in Virginia! But it is a great opportunity to collect freeze data, like every winter. If you protect palms, what palms are you protecting this winter and how?

Although there is some data in the topic Butia/Jubaea X Syagrus, it is unclear whether it involves the hybrids BJxS or JBxS. This topic is for the hybrid BJxQ (B x J) x Q. The Butia involved is either a mutt or odorata. Ten gallon under Acacia (high and open canopy). Some light bronzing to newer fronds from 26.4°F after 2 weeks. Pygmy date palm
by Blake johnson- 12 replies

I live in southern Georgia (zone 8b) and have my first Pygmy date palm that is fairly large. This winter of 2015 had a light maybe 1hr of snowing with temps getting to exactly 32 degrees. My Pygmy date palm was covered with about 3 old bed sheets and rapped in Christmas lights but still got severely burned during the cold. The fronds are now solid brown but the newest ones nearest to the spear still have some green. Will my palm survive?

Pensacola Date Palm Disaster
by Matthew92- 9 replies
- 2.8k views
The college I go to in Pensacola had a formal planting of date palms in front of the main auditorium building. They were planted in 2002 as smaller trees maybe 10 feet tall with only several feet of trunk. They eventually got to about 25-30 feet tall. However, the 2013-2014 winter took a major toll: there was around 17 degrees, an entire day basically below freezing, multiple mid to low 20's, and a coating of freezing rain during which it went to 20 degrees. Almost total defoliation. One of the palms (11 total) actually died while the others barely hung on. Next winter, although not as hard, wasn't much better, getting around 20 degrees. The canopies were still not fully …

Nannorrhops arabica (Silver)
by TexasColdHardyPalms- 6 replies

To start off with I am very disappointed with this silver variant of Nannorrhops. 1G and 3G specimens burned with frost and 27-28 degrees and I even lost a few, while the smaller 1G green Ritcieana. look great. I will leave larger ones outside to test next winter which should be larger 5G's by that time. I don't know how these naturalize in the mountains of Afghanistan if they can't handle high 20's and frost. From what I see our normal winter would 100% completely kill 3G's and smaller. These are not even Zone 9B when small.

4x consecutive days of frost at: -0.7 / -2.9 / -4.7 / -0.6°c ( 30.7 / 26.8 / 23.5 / 30.9°f ) This is 20-days after the freeze. R. baueri var. raoul island ( top ) were fried by the frost, but the R. chathamica ( bottom ) has no damage. Both forms were next to one another during the freeze, but pulled up against the house.
