My Very Slow Growing T. radiata in the ground from a one gallon three years ago and barely half a foot tall did well in this freeze with some minor spotting. Minimum was 26.5F with several upper 20s nights as well.

Sabal mauritiiformis

24F low, no frost, 15 gal sized planted away from house and wrapped in blanket with box over top, virtually no damage. 3 nights below 28F. No true overhead protection, planted in shade of fence. Edit: Minor discoloration showing now to part of outer fronds, still bright green interior fronds. Looks like a box covering at 24F was enough. (no heat source was given). Maybe 15% damage.

2022-December Freeze (SC zone 8A)
by Turtlesteve- 12 replies

December 2022. We had 5 nights in a row at or below lows of 20F. The worst night (2nd night) we hit 12F with a high of 33 the following day and a low of 15F the next night. It was also extremely windy the night before it hit 12F so there was little mercy or benefit to having favorable microclimates. I still don’t know what will survive in many cases so will update as things progress: Unprotected plants: Butia Odorata: 7 large palms (one trunking and the rest near trunking size). One large palm completely defoliated, two with spear damage, the rest look perfect. The one that defoliated is still alive. About 15 smaller Butia (3 gallon to 15 gallon size…

2018 Freeze - South Carolina

Now that it's July I wanted to report in on losses and survivors in the January 2018 freeze. I had 5-6 consecutive nights below 20F, with absolute lows of 14F and 13F. Highs in the low-mid 30's. All plants fully exposed, no canopy unless noted. Ground froze to at least 2-3" in many areas of the yard. Most of the results are somewhat expected, I did not protect anything as the severity of the freeze caught me off guard (it was forecast for low-mid 20's here). Palms in the ground: Butia odorata (mature) Silver form, 50% defoliated. (5-7 gal) - Smaller silver Butia 50-100% defoliated but survived without aid. Many seedlings were killed. Butia sp. (5 ga…

Advice for Dypsis decaryi in 9a

Well - here’s my précious Triangle palm -I rescued her 2 years ago - she survived last year’s 14 freeze temps here in St Augustine while tucked against the east side of the house during a construction project. She is now placed in a lovely but lonely location in the open on the south end of the house near the pool. Our last frost day was 2 weekends ago. Fronds have evolved to this deep bronze over the past week. I applied copper fungicide to the spear area but that’s it. Any suggestions?

2-ft. 5g Rhapis multifida (multiple stems, > 10) upslope from a measurement station recording 28.1 deg F on a hillside in Menlo Park (CA). Exposed to sky. No damage. I've heard that these palms can take sub-20 deg. F.

Pygmy date palm
by Blake johnson- 12 replies

I live in southern Georgia (zone 8b) and have my first Pygmy date palm that is fairly large. This winter of 2015 had a light maybe 1hr of snowing with temps getting to exactly 32 degrees. My Pygmy date palm was covered with about 3 old bed sheets and rapped in Christmas lights but still got severely burned during the cold. The fronds are now solid brown but the newest ones nearest to the spear still have some green. Will my palm survive?

Dypsis carlsmithii

Our January 22 freeze didn't affect a small Dypsis carlsmithii (about four feet tall, with no trunk yet). It's at the edge of shade from a laurel oak and in a bed with other palms and cycads about the same height. Palms in the yard, with full exposure to the sky, that suffered no damage include Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, A. tuckeri, Carpentaria, Coccothrinax barbadensis, Dypsis decaryi, Thrinax radiata, and Dypsis "fine leaf". One of two Satakentia liukiuensis (about 6 feet tall) suffered a great deal of leaf browning. Neighbors' Dypsis lutescens suffered considerable leaf browning. The temperature, under a clear sky with a slight breeze, fell to freezing abo…

Floridians have theirs, South Cal have theirs (aka Palmpedia), time for those of us who live in North California (or in similar climates across the globe, like the northern Mediterranean coast) to make a freeze damage record. I guess most of this region belongs to the zones 9a to 10a with rainy winters. It would be useful to see how different species react to the freezes we get. So, if you have had frosts/freezes in your garden, please let us know how your plants have fared. Palms or not. Later I will combine everything in a spreadsheet. Please write temperatures, species of plants and observed damage. Personally, I cannot contribute anything yet as our winter h…

Syagrus sancona

Mine is trunking and 14 feet tall overall. 26.5F minimum and there's only minor damage to the oldest leaf. Rest of palm looks great. Several days have now passed and my S. sancona has considerably more brown spotting showing up. Half of its fronds are freckled with 1/4'' brown spots. It will be a couple of years before those leaves are replaced.

First Post-Winter Fatalities
by palmsOrl- 12 replies

After this amazingly persistent winter (record cold in-fact), I have to-date lost only 3 palms. The first photo is what is left of my Cocos nucifera "Pacific Tall", brought back from Hawaii in 2005 as one of those bagged Cocos seedlings sold in gift shops. It was planted in too much shade and has never been a very strong grower, it has given up the ghost to fungus recently.

FREEZE PRUF

I was looking online and came across this application protection. Has anyone tried it? It states to apply above 50F when anticipated freezes occur, preferably a few days ahead or 6-8 hours if need be. Curious, because it seems if it did work to some degree it may help those slightly marginal plams and plants get through. Greg

Since no one has posted temps for this palm, I thought I'd show my brother's palms growing in Kansas City, MO (Zone 6a). Temps: His low this winter was -3F but he had 13 days in single digits which is when all the damage happens. Protection: Palms were buried in mulch. On coldest events heavy plastic was thrown over them. No lights or external heating.
