I'm not in So Cal, but I was wondering how the Veitchia X Wodyetia's survived the freezing weather. These species reports are a very interesting and useful read. Anyone have any Foxyladies that would like to give there experience? regards Tyrone

Butia/Jubaea X Syagrus

This is a 3 way cross and is in a 5 gal container. Last year it grew extreamly fast and I moved it from a 4 inch liner to a 5 gal pot. It looks like a Butiagrus cross, but has a heavier texture. At 25F I chickened and moved it in my unheated pool bar. I only have one and didn't want to risk it. It will go in the ground in this spring. I expect it will take much lower than 25 F. Dick

Six-foot jubaeas: Two nights fourteen degrees, 14 hours below freezing, numerous nights below 20, fifteen nights below 25...drumroll...NO DAMAGE. OK, tiniest bronzing of distal leaflets, ONLY on oldest 2-3 fronds. Ten other jubaeas, from straps in planter to 8 feet, no protection, very light- to no apparent damage, almost two weeks since coldest weather.

Livistona nitida

Kind of toasted after two 14-degree lows and several 8b nights, plus lots of low 20s. Had thin sheets on each of the three three-footers sometimes, but they were blown off at various times, often all night. I'd call it heavy to severe damage, though the spears and just-opening leaves are only moderately damaged. Gotta say that they looked pretty good until it started to drop below 20 -- maybe a little better than my l. australis and chinensis. DL. decipiens/decora is actually about the same as nitida, and doesn't look so bad comparatively, since half the fronds were frayed and straw-like even before the cold. Jon T.

Zone 7a, LI, NY. Endured 25-30 degree temps with no damage at all. Then seen about 14 degree temps with strong winds for about 2-3 days (felt like it was zero with wind chill). Entire plant turned light green and thinned out. No burn signs. Covered it with plastic and added x-mas lights afterwards. Very cold temps followed 15-20 degrees for a month? Uncovered about 4 weeks ago and dark green color is coming back and looking real healthy. Also have a potted Fortunei which I left in the garage during all this cold. Tips began to turn brown. Pot seems like it was frozen. I moved it indoors. Center spear began to turn yellow/white. After about 2 weeks indoors, be…

Its surprising there arent many cold hardiness reports on this so beautiful species. I decided to try it anyway after reading a post of Eric(Erin in Orlando) mentioning 2 mature V. joannis surviving -3C. Anyway, here is my report: 1m tall Veitchia joannis planted last summer,in a good microclimate and relatively close to a retaining wall(retaining 3meters of soil on the other side of it),experienced multiple hail events and a low of around -1C to -1,5C at the coldest part of the night, just before sunrise, with just slight leaf edge damage of 1-2mm Its already 2 weeks from the last cold and temperatures have been very high all this time, even allowing growth on Bism…

24 degrees... two specimens in different areas of the yard. Both from 5 gallon pots 3/05. The more exposed one - severe browning on all leaves. The other - some spotting, some brown tips. Definitely seems more tender than cunninghamia Edit 1/30/07.. both appear dead. Way more tender than cunninghamia.

Kentiopsis oliviformis, in ground, 4 feet overall. 24.1F, no frost, no canopy, planted next to a 5 foot fence and covered up w/ a sheet. No Damage.... except the oldest leaf is on it's way out now about a week after the freeze. It was about time anyway so not a major issue. A new leaf opened last week and even it shows no damage.

Three plants total: one seedling in a pot under cover, one 2-ft, first winter in ground, one 5-ft, second winter in ground. Lowest low 31, dry. Those in ground noticeably more yellow than before the severe cold, although they were already somewhat yellow. These are planted in a south-facing area close to a garage wall which radiates heat after sundown. Seedling looks fine.

Dypsis 'ambositrae'

Not sure if these are the 'real' thing, but what's been sold as D ambositrae in California for the last 10 years. Anyway, both slow growing 6 year old seedlings (4' over all about) showed no damage I thought... but just checked on them and 27F for 5 hours appears to have done more hurt than I thought. Leaf color looks pretty good.. but these 'normally' have darker leaves.. however, all petioles just 'melted' and only frizzled spikes remain... suspect both plants are dead and just don't know it yet.

I've read no one has been brave enough to test out how low this palm can go. So, I kept a potted one out under oak. It saw consecutive mornings of near freezing temps. 35F one morning. No frost. I wasn't brave enough to let it sit out when I knew it was going near 32. But, mine survived 35F with no visible damage. Its about 3 years old in a pot. Its currently in the house so its protected now.

Bad news related to my Sabal Palmetto: Today, about 2 months after the Texas freeze, palmageddon, I noticed some tiny flies around palm's crown. I spread old fronds stems wider and pulled on the spear harder... and here it happened: I pulled the spear. The spear was light brown in the middle and white soft at the bottom. I poured copper Python 27 solution with a little of neem oil and insecticide inside. The palm was healthy and thriving before the freeze... I don't know how much hope I should have. S.

This one faced three back to back nights with -1,8ºC, -2,6ºC and -3,8ºC, this one with not light frost. This in December. These recent days, one isolated and frosty night at -3,6ºC. In the middle one night at -0,5ºC. Then, some strong frost in two nights. Light frost in another two nights. However, this palm is located in the south side of the yard, in a place almost non atacked by frost. And is a big sized palm. As you see, not yet totaly burned. I am expecting the recovering, after February
