Recommendations for freeze damage
by Jenasmith- 1 reply

I’m looking for thoughts and recommendations on my palms. I have 7 California fan palms (I think that’s what they are!). I’m in TEXAS (Fort Hood area) and the freeze in February was sad. The fronds all immediately went pale brown when we thawed (some fronds had snapped from the snow/ice weight) and I was advised to just wait 4-6 weeks before trimming any away. I trimmed many dead fronds away 2 weeks ago and have noticed the black fungus/mold problem starting. I began testing to see if the spears would pull and sure enough they have and the poor things have terrible rot down at least 2 feet into the heart. I just treated for the first time using H202 (3% solution) and spra…

Cold damaged palm care
by smatofu- 1 reply

Hi, How to take care of a cold damaged dormant palm (no spear pull, no growth, no green spear). Questions to advance forum members. 1. Water the palm or not? 2. Cover the top when raining or not? 3. Cover the palm at night with a blanket to make it warm and potentially to promote growth? 4. Fertilize? 5. Use copper, hydrogen peroxide, or both? For the beginners: - if you cover then use something breathable, like a paper bag. Never plastic because you may cook your palm, - if you fertilize, don't fertilize too much and too close to the trunk. Thank you in advance! …

We live in Katy Texas and experienced a hard freeze a few weeks ago. I just trimmed off the dead/brown palms - all center pieces still enter but brown. The largest palm’s entire middle section is dry, brittle, and falling off. All have a lot of debris around the boots. What should I do?! New to palms. Thanks!

Need Help Houston Freeze Please!

All- I am victim of the Houston Freeze. I currently have Med fans almost perfect condition. Just to note. I fertilized my palms and saturated the ground with Clearys 3306 systemati and super thrive. I sprayed throats with pump sprayer of clearys. Going to spray copper or hydrogen Peroxide this weekend I hit every palm with 5gallon of water and super thrive. Here is what is remaining of Medjools and Sylvesters. Looks dismal. I don't plan on removing fronds until I see green. Do I need to take out the very top? When I spray with Hyrogen Peroxide can you provide instructions for how much Hydrogen Peroxide per gallon of water. …

Pictures from an all time low of 0.5F in Sarepta Louisiana. I wrapped them up with blankets and a tarp/trash bags. The small Sabals I covered with 3 gallon pots and a 10 lbs weight. They have obvious sign of burn. So far all center spears are good. Thanks for all the good advice to keep it dry on the front end. I believe that was the difference for survival in what is called a 100 year storm.

Three plants total: one seedling in a pot under cover, one 2-ft, first winter in ground, one 5-ft, second winter in ground. Lowest low 31, dry. Those in ground noticeably more yellow than before the severe cold, although they were already somewhat yellow. These are planted in a south-facing area close to a garage wall which radiates heat after sundown. Seedling looks fine.

Vallejo, CA, (USDA Zone 9b/Sunset Zone 17) Advective freeze last night, with frost. Dew point hovered just below actual temperatures during the coldest hours. Humidity was considerably high for an event like this in Northern California. Generally during similar cold events humidity levels out in my area are consistently quite low. ~70% damage on horizontally exposed leaves. This is a juvenile 5 multiple clump planted last July 4th, 2020 so a pretty dense set of leaves packed into a small area, which coincidentally results in some leaves being exposed and damaged, and others protected and damage free. This clump is under wide open sky near a west facing wooden fence, less …

Areca ipot dead at 36 degrees
by John of Ponce- 2 replies
I wanted to let other palm owners know how very cold sensitive Areca ipots are. They were doing well and healthy until the temp fell. Wow do they hate cold weather. Them and Areca macrocalx didn't just get burned they died out right. Most of my other 107 species of palms did well. I'm experimenting with palm species that will grow in my new coastal location in central Florida. I'm about a half mile from the beach on a barrier island. My area just of south of Daytona is listed as zone 9B. Yet I see other plants that make me think the island that I'm on as opposed to the mainland must be 10 a. As a barometer, I have been aggressively trying to grow as many species…

comparing the cold hardiness of Areca catechu vs Areca macrocalx
by John of Ponce- 6 replies

I'd like to report an interesting finding. For the last couple of years I have been growing a variety of palms on my patio and pots. I have grown to love the ultra Rich Green that you see in the Areca class of palms. Recently over Christmas when I was out of town the temperature on my patio got down to 35°. My triple-headed Areca catechu was pretty severely burnt while my double-headed Areca macrocalx located right beside my catechu was killed dead outright. John

A while back I came across this web page that gave zone ratings for palms and select cycads. I have done a search on palmtalk and have not found any reference to this page, so I thought I'd share. https://realpalmtrees.com/knowledge-base/world-plant-cold-hardiness-zones/comparison-charts-usda-zones-and-palm-trees/

OK, tiniest bronzing of distal leaflets, ONLY on oldest 2-3 fronds. Ten other jubaeas, from straps in planter to 8 feet, no protection, very light- to no apparent damage, almost two weeks since coldest weather.

23 one gallon plants, 1 yr old, 1-2 leaves, 5" height, saw 32F, under patio cover (2x2's spaced 1" apart), no wind exposure, frost at least one night, looked good until recent latent damage (fungus taking over probably, but no burn from freeze), lost 6 plants, others look really good. Spraying daconil and copper fungicide!

I've read no one has been brave enough to test out how low this palm can go. So, I kept a potted one out under oak. It saw consecutive mornings of near freezing temps. 35F one morning. No frost. I wasn't brave enough to let it sit out when I knew it was going near 32. But, mine survived 35F with no visible damage. Its about 3 years old in a pot. Its currently in the house so its protected now.

My bottle is officially dead
by JungleGina- 3 replies
- 1.2k views
My bottle palm is officially dead. It took 3 people to lift it into my truck in 2007 when I dug it from the yard of a friend who had no idea what it was and didn't want it. I happily offered it a new home. All was going well for a while. But the freezes of the last 3 winters have been slow death for this poor palm. And tonite we're forecast for 39 degrees and tomorrow for 38. Of course it's obviously too late already. March 2010 March 2011 I thought it might recover... Feb 2012 Sorry buddy

32.2F for ultimate low with temps below 33F for 2 hours. No wind, sheet thrown over palms, dewpoint about 30F, no overhead canopy. Frost on rooftops, cartops and grass in lower lying and exposed areas, no frost on palms observed. Minimal damage so far. Some yellowing spotting from extended 3 to 4 week cool period with lows in 40s and one other event to 36F air temp similar to this one prior to this event.
